If your MacBook says “Not Charging,” first check whether macOS is intentionally holding the battery below full. Optimized Battery Charging and a configured Charge Limit can pause charging; a weak power source, heat, heavy workload, cable problem, or hardware fault can also explain it. Apple’s guidance covers these general checks, but does not establish that macOS 27 causes a charging problem.
Start with the exact battery status
Check the battery status menu in the menu bar, then open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery to review the battery options. The wording helps distinguish a normal pause from a power issue.
- “Charging On Hold”: Optimized Battery Charging may be delaying a charge past 80% to reduce battery wear. If you need a full charge now, choose Charge to Full Now from the battery status menu.
- “Charged to [%] Limit” or “Charging to [%] Limit”: A Charge Limit may be holding the battery at its configured level. When that feature is enabled, Apple says charging resumes if the battery falls more than 5% below the limit while connected to power. The Mac may occasionally charge to 100% to keep its state-of-charge estimate accurate.
- “Not Charging”: The power source may be too weak for charging, or the Mac may be using power faster than the source supplies it. The status alone does not prove the battery has failed.
Settings and labels can vary by Mac model and macOS version. Do not turn off Optimized Battery Charging simply because the battery pauses near 80%; that behavior can be expected.

Move the Mac to a hard, well-ventilated surface and let it cool. Apple recommends an ambient temperature of 10° to 35° C (50° to 95° F) for Mac laptops. Charging may pause at 80% if recommended battery temperatures are exceeded; blankets and thick carpeting can restrict ventilation.

While checking, close unusually demanding apps, lower display brightness if practical, and disconnect devices you do not need. A demanding workload can consume more power than the adapter provides, so the battery can drain even while the Mac is plugged in.
Check the outlet, adapter, cable, and port
- Test the outlet. Confirm it works, then reseat the adapter at the outlet and the Mac. If you use a power strip or dock, simplify the connection and test the adapter directly where practical.
- Inspect the charging path. Look for visible damage to the adapter, cable, and Mac’s charging port. Disconnect the adapter before cleaning the port; Apple recommends a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Stop using damaged charging hardware.
- Verify the cable can charge. A USB-C connector does not guarantee charging support: some USB-C cables transfer data only. Try a known charging-capable cable if available.
- Match the power source to your Mac. Identify the MacBook model and its minimum recommended adapter wattage before substituting a charger or display. Apple says USB-C-charging Macs can use a USB Power Delivery-compatible adapter or display, but a low-wattage source may run the Mac without charging its battery.
To check the connected adapter’s wattage, inspect its label or hold Option while choosing Apple menu > System Information > Power. There is no single wattage recommendation that fits every MacBook. If choosing a replacement, match the Mac’s model-specific minimum and use a cable that supports charging; do not expect a new adapter to fix a temperature, software, charge-limit, or battery-health issue.

On models with a MagSafe indicator, amber means charging or on hold; green means fully charged. If your Mac supports both MagSafe and USB-C charging, Apple says it charges from only one source at a time, using the source that supplies the most power. Connecting both does not make it charge faster.

Apple advises checking for macOS updates because software or firmware updates can improve communication with the adapter. Save your work, restart the Mac, then check for available updates in Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.

Restarting an Apple silicon Mac resets its power-management controller. For an Intel Mac, Apple directs users to its separate SMC reset procedure; do not apply Intel reset key sequences to an Apple silicon Mac. If the battery drains while connected, also close power-intensive apps and disconnect unnecessary devices before retesting.
Run diagnostics or get service if charging still fails
If the Mac still will not charge after checking the status, temperature, power source, and software, run Apple Diagnostics to help identify a possible hardware component issue and next step. If the battery condition says Service Recommended, include that detail when contacting Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider. Seek support if basic checks fail or charging hardware is damaged.

What macOS 27 does—and does not—tell you
Apple’s Developer release listing identifies macOS 27.0.1 (26A434), dated September 28, 2026. That confirms the release exists, but the Apple charging guidance available here is general Mac guidance, not a notice of a macOS 27-specific charging regression. Do not assume the operating system caused the issue unless evidence on your Mac or a specific Apple advisory points to it.
