The 2026 MacBook Air with M5 is a strong choice for portable everyday work, school, and many creative tasks. Its best arguments are long battery life, a quiet fanless design, and 512GB of standard storage. Its main compromises are two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a 60Hz built-in display rather than ProMotion, and less suitability for workloads that run hard for long periods. Choose the 13-inch model if carrying weight matters most; choose the 15-inch for more workspace without stepping up to a Pro.
MacBook Air M5 pros and cons at a glance
| Pros | Cons and trade-offs |
|---|---|
| Fast performance for a thin, fanless laptop | Two Thunderbolt 4 ports may mean a hub or dock for several wired accessories |
| Long battery life, with Apple claiming up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web | The built-in display is 500-nit Liquid Retina, not a 120Hz ProMotion display |
| 512GB standard storage, configurable up to 4TB | Fanless cooling is a consideration for sustained heavy CPU or GPU work |
| 13-inch and 15-inch sizes to suit different portability and workspace needs | Recent M-series Air owners may find the generational change modest |
| Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, MagSafe charging, and support for up to two external displays | U.S. launch prices were higher than the previous generation’s launch prices |
What the M5 Air does well
Strong performance for portable work
Apple says the M5 brings CPU, graphics, and AI improvements over earlier MacBook Air generations. Independent tests also show capable performance: Tom’s Guide measured a Geekbench 6 multi-core score of 17,276 and a 4K-to-1080p HandBrake transcode time of 4 minutes 34 seconds on its tested 15-inch M5 Air. Those results describe that publication’s test unit and workload, not a guarantee for every configuration or task. Tom’s Guide and TechRadar both found the Air capable, while TechRadar’s review also points to demanding games as a reminder that the Air is not a dedicated gaming laptop.
The practical fit is everyday computing and many creative workflows, especially when portability and silence matter. For work that keeps the CPU or GPU under heavy load for long stretches, compare a MacBook Pro’s active cooling and other capabilities before deciding. The Air is fanless and silent, according to Apple; that design does not mean every demanding task will throttle, but it is relevant to sustained workloads.

Long battery life, with test methods in view
Apple lists up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web use on its current specifications page. Independent web-surfing tests reported 15 hours 37 minutes for Tom’s Guide, testing continuously over Wi-Fi at 150 nits, and 15.5 hours for TechRadar. The two review results come from separate test methods and should not be treated as a standardized head-to-head comparison.

More storage as standard
The M5 Air starts with 512GB of storage and can be configured up to 4TB, according to Apple’s March 2026 announcement. Apple says the standard capacity is double the prior generation’s base storage and claims the new SSD has twice the previous generation’s read and write performance. The larger starting capacity is useful if you keep apps, photos, and active projects on the laptop; the speed comparison is Apple’s claim, not an independent measurement cited here.
Two sizes and current wireless features
The 13-inch model has a 13.6-inch display; the 15-inch has a 15.3-inch display. The smaller Air prioritizes a compact footprint for carrying, while the larger model gives documents, timelines, and side-by-side windows more room. Apple lists Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and support for up to two external displays across the lineup.
Where the MacBook Air M5 compromises
Port selection is limited
Apple lists two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a MagSafe charging port, and a headphone jack. Charging through MagSafe can leave both Thunderbolt ports available, but users who routinely connect multiple wired displays, storage devices, or other peripherals may need a compatible USB-C or Thunderbolt hub or dock. No particular accessory is assessed here.

The screen is not a ProMotion display
The built-in display is a 500-nit Liquid Retina panel, according to Apple. Tom’s Guide notes that it does not include 120Hz ProMotion. If high refresh rates or a richer HDR-oriented built-in display are central to your work or viewing, compare the current MacBook Pro specifications directly rather than assuming the Air’s screen offers the same features.
Fanless design is not ideal for every sustained workload
The silent design is an everyday advantage, but it is a trade-off for people who repeatedly run long, demanding CPU- or GPU-intensive tasks. A Pro model is worth comparing for sustained creative workloads, alongside its cooling, display, ports, and price. The Air remains a capable general-purpose laptop; the distinction is about workload fit, not a claim that it cannot run demanding apps.
The upgrade case is weaker for recent Air owners
Macworld describes the M5 generation as having relatively little new while still judging it a strong choice for most users. If you already own a recent M-series Air, weigh whether you need the M5 performance or the move to 512GB base storage against the cost of replacing a working laptop. A buyer coming from an older machine may value those changes more.

13-inch or 15-inch: which size fits?
| Choose | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 13-inch MacBook Air M5 | Frequent travel, commuting, and users who prioritize a smaller laptop | Less built-in screen area for multitasking |
| 15-inch MacBook Air M5 | People who want more room for documents, creative timelines, or multiple windows without choosing a Pro | A larger footprint and less emphasis on compact portability |
Both sizes share the Air’s core proposition. The choice is chiefly about how much screen workspace you want versus how compact a laptop you prefer to carry.
How it compares with a recent Air or a Pro
Moving from a recent M-series Air
The M5 Air makes the clearest case when you need more performance than your current laptop provides or would benefit from 512GB of standard storage. For a recent M-series Air that already handles your work, the change may not justify an upgrade by itself. Compare the actual current price of the configuration you want with the value of keeping your existing laptop; launch pricing is not the same as today’s sale or local pricing.
Choosing between Air and Pro
Consider a Pro if you often sustain heavy CPU or GPU workloads, prioritize a high-refresh built-in screen, or need a broader built-in port selection. The Air is the more natural fit when portability, quiet operation, and everyday capability matter more than those features. Compare the models’ current specifications and total cost for the configuration you need.

U.S. launch prices and what to check now
Tom’s Guide reported U.S. launch prices of $1,099 for the 13-inch M5 Air and $1,299 for the 15-inch M5 Air in 2026. Each was $100 above the respective prior-generation launch price. These are launch figures, not live prices: availability, discounts, and local pricing can change, so check current listings in your region before buying.
Verdict: who should buy the MacBook Air M5?
The MacBook Air M5 is a good fit if you want a fast, quiet laptop for everyday tasks and a range of creative work, with long battery life and 512GB of starting storage. Pick 13 inches for portability or 15 inches for a roomier screen. Look at a Pro instead if your work regularly sustains heavy processing, you want a 120Hz built-in display, or two Thunderbolt ports would be too restrictive.
