Short answer: The Mac Studio remains an excellent fixed-desk workstation, but its 2026 price increase makes the buying decision much less automatic. The M4 Max is the sensible choice for most professional Mac users who need sustained performance, multiple displays, extensive connectivity, and quiet operation. The M3 Ultra is worth considering only for workloads that can exploit its much larger memory capacity, higher memory bandwidth, and substantially greater parallel CPU and GPU resources.
As of August 10, 2026, Apple still sells the 2025 Mac Studio with an M4 Max or M3 Ultra; Apple has not officially announced an M5 Mac Studio. The U.S. starting prices are now $2,499 for the M4 Max model and $5,299 for the M3 Ultra model, before tax, memory or storage upgrades, a display, and peripherals. Apple’s current Mac Studio page lists these two families.

Buy the M4 Max if you need a powerful, quiet desktop now. Buy the M3 Ultra only if you can identify a real workload that benefits from its extra cores, bandwidth, memory, or eight-display support. If your current Mac is still adequate, waiting is reasonable because reports suggest a possible M5-based refresh later in 2026—but that timing remains unconfirmed.

The Mac Studio is a compact, headless Mac desktop: a computer without a built-in screen, keyboard, trackpad, camera, or speakers. It sits above the Mac mini in Apple’s desktop range and serves as a compact workstation for professionals who already have a suitable desk setup.
It is designed for sustained workloads rather than portability. Video editors, photographers, musicians, developers, 3D artists, researchers, and local-AI enthusiasts can leave it running at a desk while connecting several displays, fast storage, cameras, audio interfaces, network equipment, and other peripherals.

Mac Studio price in the United States in 2026
Many Mac Studio reviews still quote the March 2025 launch prices. Those prices are now outdated for U.S. buyers.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

| Configuration | March 2025 launch price | Current U.S. starting price | Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| M4 Max base model | $1,999 | $2,499 | +$500 |
| M3 Ultra base model | $3,999 | $5,299 | +$1,300 |
The current prices are Apple U.S. prices before sales tax and before optional memory, storage, AppleCare+, displays, keyboards, pointing devices, webcams, speakers, docks, and backup drives. Check the live Apple Mac store before ordering because Apple changed some configurations and availability during 2026.
The M3 Ultra now starts at more than twice the price of the M4 Max. Reports linked the increases to sharply higher memory costs and supply constraints, but buyers should treat that as market reporting rather than an Apple performance justification. The price increase does not turn the M3 Ultra into a different product generation; it simply makes the existing configuration substantially more expensive.
What does a realistic setup cost?
The minimum usable cost depends heavily on what you already own:
- If you already own a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and storage: the entry point is $2,499 for M4 Max or $5,299 for M3 Ultra, plus tax.
- If you need a complete desk: add a display, input devices, camera, audio equipment, and usually external storage. The total can be hundreds or thousands of dollars above the computer price.
- If you work with video, photography, audio libraries, virtual machines, Docker images, or local AI models: budget for external Thunderbolt storage and an independent backup system rather than assuming the base internal SSD will be sufficient.
- If you need more memory: price the exact configuration in Apple’s live configurator. Memory is not user-replaceable, and the available options changed during 2026.
Do not use launch-era configuration prices from a 2025 review as a current quote. Apple’s upgrade pricing and the configurations available to order have changed repeatedly. The M4 Max store page and M3 Ultra store page are the appropriate places to verify today’s options.

| Starting U.S. price in 2026 | $2,499 | $5,299 |
Both chips include hardware-accelerated ray tracing, enhanced media engines, and Thunderbolt 5. The two versions use the same basic 7.7-by-7.7-by-3.7-inch external enclosure, although the M3 Ultra weighs more because it uses a larger cooling solution.
There is an important memory qualification. At launch, Apple described the M3 Ultra Mac Studio as supporting up to 512GB of unified memory. Apple’s current support documentation lists a lower 256GB maximum. Those are not necessarily contradictory: one is a launch capability and the other is the current published or orderable configuration. Verify the live Apple configurator rather than assuming that a launch-day maximum is still available. See Apple’s 2025 announcement and current Apple Support specifications.
Why the M4 Max is the default recommendation
The M4 Max combines newer-generation CPU cores with a strong GPU and substantial media capabilities. It is usually the better choice for:
- Photoshop, Lightroom, Affinity, Pixelmator Pro, and general photography.
- Most Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve work.
- Audio production and large Logic Pro sessions.
- Xcode and most software-development workflows.
- Multitasking across many professional applications.
- Users who need up to 128GB-class memory but do not need Ultra-scale capacity.
- Buyers who want the least expensive Mac Studio and the strongest value within the Studio range.
The M4 Max is also faster in many lightly threaded or interactive tasks. In Tom’s Hardware testing, an M4 Max review unit scored 4,113 in Geekbench 6 single-core, compared with 3,349 for the M3 Ultra. That is why the older-sounding M3 Ultra is not automatically faster in every application.

The M3 Ultra has substantially more CPU and GPU resources, nearly twice the M4 Max’s memory bandwidth, more media engines, and access to much larger unified-memory configurations. It is intended for genuinely extreme workloads such as:
- Large local AI models that must fit into system memory.
- High-resolution 3D rendering and GPU-parallel scenes.
- Scientific, engineering, and data-processing workloads that scale across many cores.
- Long-running video rendering, encoding, and transcoding.
- Very large codebases or highly parallel build systems.
- Professional applications that can use its additional GPU cores and memory bandwidth.
- Workstations requiring up to eight external displays.
The correct rule is simple: buy the M3 Ultra because your workload needs its cores, bandwidth, or memory—not because the word Ultra sounds faster. If you cannot identify a workload that regularly constrains the M4 Max, the M3 Ultra is probably an expensive luxury rather than a productive upgrade.
Mac Studio performance: what reviews actually show
Apple’s performance claims
Apple describes the M4 Max Mac Studio as up to 3.5 times faster than the M1 Max Mac Studio and up to 6.1 times faster than the most powerful Intel 27-inch iMac in selected tests. Apple also reported:
- Up to 2.1 times faster Xcode build performance than the M1 Max Mac Studio.
- Up to 1.2 times faster ProRes transcoding than the M1 Max Mac Studio.
- Up to 1.6 times faster Photoshop image processing than the M1 Max Mac Studio.
These figures came from Apple tests conducted in January and February 2025 using particular configurations and applications. They should be read as selected comparisons, not as a universal speed rating. Apple’s broader claim that the M3 Ultra can approach twice the performance of the M4 Max applies to workloads that can use its additional cores, GPU capacity, and memory bandwidth. Apple’s methodology and comparisons are published here.
Independent benchmark results
Tom’s Hardware testing illustrates the workload-dependent nature of the comparison:
| Test | M4 Max | M3 Ultra | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Geekbench 6 single-core | 4,113 | 3,349 | M4 Max is stronger in single-threaded responsiveness |
| Geekbench 6 multicore | 26,966 | 27,929 | Close in this particular test |
| 25GB file transfer | 2,441MB/s | 2,685MB/s | M3 Ultra was modestly faster in the tested transfer |
| HandBrake 4K-to-1080p | 1:56 | 1:16 | Ultra’s media and parallel resources help |
| Xcode benchmark | 79 seconds | 64 seconds | Ultra completed the tested build sooner |
In repeated Cinebench 2024 multicore testing, the M3 Ultra remained around 3,000–3,100 while the M4 Max stayed around 2,050–2,100. In Blender GPU tests, the M3 Ultra substantially outperformed the M4 Max. However, high-core-count AMD and Intel Windows workstations remained competitive or faster in CPU rendering.
These results explain why there is no honest single answer to which chip is faster. The M4 Max can feel quicker in everyday interactive work and can be close in some multicore tests. The M3 Ultra pulls decisively ahead when software scales well across many CPU or GPU cores, uses a great deal of memory bandwidth, or benefits from its larger memory pool. See Tom’s Hardware’s full testing and Ars Technica’s workload-focused review for additional context.
Is the Mac Studio quiet?
Quiet operation is one of the Studio’s strongest practical advantages over many conventional desktop workstations. Tom’s Hardware described both tested configurations as silent even under heavy load. Apple’s technical documentation reports a declared operator-position sound-pressure level of 7dB in idle and wireless-web testing.
That does not mean the Mac Studio is fanless or universally inaudible. Noise depends on the workload, room acoustics, microphone distance, and the sensitivity of the listener. External hard drives, docks, displays, and audio equipment may be louder than the computer. The safest conclusion is that the Studio is exceptionally quiet for a sustained-performance desktop, not that every setup will make no sound.
Ports and connectivity
The Mac Studio’s connectivity is a major reason to choose it over a Mac mini or notebook.
Rear ports on both versions
- Four Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports supporting speeds up to 120Gb/s.
- Two USB-A ports supporting speeds up to 5Gb/s.
- HDMI 2.1.
- 10Gb Ethernet.
- 3.5mm headphone output with support for high-impedance headphones.
Front ports
- M4 Max: two USB-C ports up to 10Gb/s and a UHS-II SDXC card slot.
- M3 Ultra: two Thunderbolt 5 ports up to 120Gb/s and a UHS-II SDXC card slot.
The difference is easy to overlook. The M4 Max’s front USB-C ports are convenient for cards, cameras, accessories, and short-term drives, but they do not support external displays. The M3 Ultra’s front ports are full Thunderbolt 5 ports. Use the rear Thunderbolt ports for high-speed storage, displays, and PCIe expansion chassis. Apple’s port specifications list the supported standards and limitations.
Both models use Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 rather than Wi-Fi 7. A buyer with a high-end Wi-Fi 7 network should use 10Gb Ethernet when the fastest and most predictable network performance matters.

How many displays can it run?
The M4 Max supports up to five external displays, while the M3 Ultra supports up to eight. The exact limit depends on resolution, refresh rate, connection type, adapters, and the arrangement of the displays.
M4 Max examples
- Four 6K displays at 60Hz over Thunderbolt plus one 4K display at 144Hz over HDMI.
- Two 6K displays plus one 8K display at 60Hz or a 4K display at up to 240Hz over HDMI.
M3 Ultra examples
- Eight displays up to 6K at 60Hz or 4K at up to 144Hz.
- Four displays up to 8K at 60Hz or 4K at up to 240Hz.
These are supported configurations, not a promise that every combination of five or eight high-resolution, high-refresh-rate displays will work. Check Apple’s display support documentation for the exact connection plan before purchasing monitors and adapters.
Unified memory: RAM and VRAM in one pool
Apple’s unified memory is shared by the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine. Instead of maintaining separate system RAM and graphics memory, the components can access a common pool, reducing some data-copying overhead. This is useful for large images, video timelines, GPU-heavy creative applications, large datasets, and local AI.
However, unified memory has important limitations:
- It is selected when you buy the computer.
- It is not user-upgradable.
- It is shared by the operating system, applications, CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine.
- It is not identical to having the same amount of dedicated VRAM on a discrete graphics card.
- Running a large model or dataset in memory does not guarantee high performance.
For example, 96GB of unified memory does not mean the GPU has a dedicated 96GB graphics card. It can nevertheless allow a model or dataset to fit into memory when a conventional GPU with less VRAM could not. Actual speed depends on memory bandwidth, software frameworks, model architecture, quantization, and whether the task is limited by the CPU, GPU, or memory.
Recommended Free Tools
Because memory cannot be added later, it is a poor place to economize if you expect to keep the Studio for five to seven years or plan to move into local AI, 3D, virtual machines, or increasingly large creative projects.
Storage: fast, but fixed
The internal SSD is also not user-upgradable in the normal sense. The base M4 Max includes 512GB, while the base M3 Ultra includes 1TB. Apple lists capacities up to 8TB and 16TB respectively.
Thunderbolt 5 makes external storage unusually practical. A fast external SSD can hold video libraries, photo catalogs, audio samples, archives, backups, and less latency-sensitive projects. But external storage is not identical to internal storage for application launches, databases, virtual machines, scratch disks, active video projects, or loading local AI models.
A sensible plan is to buy enough internal storage for macOS, applications, caches, active projects, and frequently used models, then use external Thunderbolt storage for larger libraries and archives. Do not buy the smallest internal SSD merely because external storage exists: that approach adds cables, another point of failure, sleep and eject complications, and the need to maintain independent backups.

Mac Studio for local AI
Local AI is one of the Mac Studio’s most distinctive use cases. Large unified-memory configurations, high bandwidth—especially the M3 Ultra’s 819GB/s—and relatively low noise make it attractive for running models locally. Apple-oriented frameworks such as MLX and Metal-based software can take advantage of Apple Silicon.
Apple said that a 512GB M3 Ultra configuration could run models with more than 600 billion parameters entirely in memory. That statement concerns capacity, not a universal promise of useful inference speed. A model can fit in memory and still generate tokens slowly if it is limited by bandwidth, software support, quantization, context length, or CPU/GPU utilization.
The M3 Ultra is the better choice when a model will not fit comfortably in an M4 Max configuration. But the current 256GB published maximum and the much higher 2026 price make the calculation more difficult. NVIDIA workstations still offer major advantages in CUDA support, software maturity, tensor acceleration, and absolute throughput for many production AI workloads. Choose the Mac Studio for quiet local experimentation, Apple-framework compatibility, memory capacity, and power efficiency—not on memory size alone.
Mac Studio for gaming
The Mac Studio can run supported games well, but it is not the best gaming purchase. Apple Silicon provides strong integrated graphics, hardware ray tracing, and good performance in native Metal or Apple Silicon games. The platform still has a smaller game library than Windows, inconsistent support for anti-cheat systems, and limited support for Windows-only titles.
There is also no conventional internal discrete GPU upgrade and no supported eGPU path on Apple Silicon. A Windows gaming PC can usually deliver a broader library and a more powerful upgradeable graphics configuration for the same overall budget.
In one Tom’s Hardware test, the M3 Ultra reached approximately 100 frames per second and the M4 Max approximately 80 frames per second in Resident Evil Village at 5120×1440 using MetalFX upscaling. That is a useful example of capability, not a general gaming guarantee; results vary by game, resolution, settings, API, and compatibility.
Software compatibility limitations
Intel Mac applications and Rosetta
Rosetta currently allows many Intel-based Mac applications to run on Apple Silicon. That transition layer is helpful, but it should not be treated as a permanent solution for every professional workflow. Apple’s current support information says Rosetta remains available through macOS 27 and will be restricted to certain older games beginning with macOS 28.
Before buying, check every mission-critical application, plug-in, audio driver, hardware interface, kernel extension, virtualization tool, scientific package, and engineering utility. An old application may launch through Rosetta while an associated driver or plug-in does not. Apple’s Rosetta guidance explains the planned change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWindows and Boot Camp
The Mac Studio uses Apple Silicon, so it does not support the traditional Boot Camp workflow used by Intel Macs. Windows virtualization may be possible through third-party software and Windows on ARM, but compatibility and performance vary by application.
If you require native x86 Windows, CUDA, Windows-only drivers, specialized PCIe hardware, or software that depends on a conventional PC environment, a Windows workstation is the safer choice.
External GPUs
Do not confuse Thunderbolt 5 PCIe expansion with eGPU support. Apple’s current documentation says eGPU support requires an Intel Mac. The Apple Silicon Mac Studio can connect fast storage and certain PCIe expansion chassis, but it is not a supported platform for adding a conventional external graphics card. See Apple’s eGPU requirements.
Apple Intelligence
The Mac Studio hardware supports Apple Intelligence, but features depend on the macOS version, region, language, and rollout status. Apple’s specifications explicitly qualify availability, so Apple Intelligence should not be the main reason to spend $2,499 to $5,299 on a workstation. The stronger reasons are sustained compute performance, memory, media engines, I/O, display support, and quiet operation.

Mac Studio alternatives
Mac mini
The Mac mini is the most important alternative for value-conscious Mac buyers. Apple’s current U.S. store lists the Mac mini from $799, compared with $2,499 for the Mac Studio M4 Max. Apple’s Mac mini page shows the current range.
Choose the Mac mini when two or three displays are enough, external storage and hubs are acceptable, and your workload does not require the Studio’s maximum GPU performance, memory capacity, port count, or sustained cooling. For office work, browsing, ordinary coding, light photo editing, and occasional video, the Mac mini is often the better value.
MacBook Pro with M5 Max
Apple introduced the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro in March 2026. It is the stronger alternative when one computer must serve both a desk and a mobile workflow. You also receive a built-in display, keyboard, trackpad, camera, speakers, and battery.
The Mac Studio remains preferable for a permanent workstation with many external displays, extensive wired I/O, long sustained workloads, and a buyer who already owns a high-quality monitor and peripherals. The MacBook Pro is preferable when portability and the latest CPU generation matter more than the Studio’s desktop form factor. See Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max announcement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Mac Pro
The Mac Pro’s historical advantage was internal PCIe expansion, including specialized cards and professional hardware. That advantage does not translate directly to the Mac Studio. Reports in 2026 said Apple discontinued the Mac Pro, so do not treat it as a straightforward current alternative without checking Apple’s live availability and support status.
If you need internal graphics cards, capture cards, specialized networking, accelerator cards, or other expansion hardware, a Windows or Linux workstation may be more appropriate than either current Mac desktop. Reporting about the Mac Pro’s status should be treated as reporting unless Apple provides a formal discontinuation notice.
Windows workstation
A Windows workstation is generally the better fit for NVIDIA CUDA, high-end discrete graphics, expandable RAM and storage, native Windows software, broad gaming compatibility, internal PCIe expansion, and specialized engineering or scientific drivers.
The Mac Studio is compelling when macOS is required, the applications are well-supported on Apple Silicon, compact size and low noise matter, or unified memory is more useful than separate system RAM and GPU VRAM. Do not compare only CPU specifications: compare the complete system, software ecosystem, graphics API, drivers, upgrade path, and total cost.
Should you buy now or wait for an M5 Mac Studio?
Apple has not announced an M5 Mac Studio as of August 10, 2026. Reports have suggested a possible M5 Max or M5 Ultra update later in 2026, potentially around October, but the date, specifications, price, and availability are unconfirmed. Treat those reports as a reason to consider timing—not as a promised release schedule. See the MacRumors rumor roundup and Macworld’s reporting.
| Buy now if… | Wait if… |
|---|---|
| You need the performance immediately. | Your current Mac remains responsive and productive. |
| Your workload is already constrained by CPU, GPU, memory, or media processing. | You specifically want the latest CPU generation. |
| You need a fixed desktop with many ports and displays. | You are considering an expensive high-memory configuration and can wait for pricing clarity. |
| You already own a monitor and peripherals and can accept the current prices. | You can tolerate an unconfirmed later-2026 refresh. |
Waiting is most rational for buyers who are not currently limited by their computer. Buying now is rational when the Studio will directly reduce render times, enable a required memory-heavy workflow, replace an unreliable workstation, or support billable work immediately. No rumor can guarantee that a future M5 model will launch on time or cost less; it may also preserve the same non-upgradable design and command a higher price.
How to configure the Mac Studio before buying
- Choose the chip from the workload, not the product name. Start with M4 Max unless you can demonstrate a need for Ultra-level parallel processing, memory, bandwidth, or display support.
- Choose memory for the entire ownership period. Account for the operating system, applications, browser tabs, virtual machines, containers, creative projects, and future model or dataset growth. You cannot add unified memory later.
- Plan internal storage around active work. Keep applications, caches, active projects, and frequently used data on fast local storage where possible. Use external Thunderbolt storage for libraries and archives.
- Budget for backup separately. An external project drive is not a backup unless a second independent copy exists.
- Map the display connections. Count resolution, refresh rate, adapters, and which ports will be occupied by storage or docks. The M4 Max’s front USB-C ports cannot drive displays.
- Check application and accessory compatibility. Verify Apple Silicon support for professional software, plug-ins, audio interfaces, drivers, virtualization tools, and hardware.
- Price the complete workstation. Add the display, keyboard, pointing device, camera, speakers, storage, backup, networking equipment, and any warranty or support plan you actually need.
Final recommendation by buyer type
- Best Mac Studio for most professionals: M4 Max, with enough memory and internal storage for the planned ownership period.
- Best for extreme local AI and parallel workloads: M3 Ultra, but only when its memory capacity, bandwidth, or rendering performance is worth the current premium.
- Best value Mac desktop: Mac mini for users whose work does not require the Studio’s extra GPU, memory, ports, displays, and cooling.
- Best portable professional alternative: M5 Max MacBook Pro.
- Best for CUDA, gaming, upgradeability, or internal expansion: a Windows or Linux workstation.
- Best decision for many M1 or M2 owners: upgrade when your workload is limited by memory, GPU performance, media processing, ports, or sustained speed—not simply because a newer chip exists.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I upgrade the Mac Studio’s RAM or SSD later?
No. Unified memory and internal SSD capacity should be treated as fixed at purchase. Choose memory conservatively, then use external Thunderbolt storage for libraries, archives, and backups.
Is the M3 Ultra twice as fast as the M4 Max?
Not universally. The M3 Ultra is much stronger in some heavily parallel CPU and GPU workloads, but the M4 Max can be faster in single-core work and close in certain multicore tests. The result depends on application scaling, memory use, and whether the task uses the Ultra’s additional resources.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can the Mac Studio run Windows or use an eGPU?
It does not support the traditional Intel-Mac Boot Camp workflow, and Apple’s eGPU support requires an Intel Mac. Windows virtualization may work for some Windows-on-ARM applications, but buyers who require native x86 Windows, CUDA, or specialized PC drivers should choose a Windows workstation.
Is the Mac Studio good for gaming?
It can perform well in supported Apple Silicon and Metal games, but Windows offers a larger library, broader anti-cheat support, more discrete-GPU choices, and a clearer upgrade path. The Mac Studio is a workstation first, not a gaming-first purchase.
Should I buy the Mac Studio now or wait for M5?
Buy now if you need the performance or memory immediately and the current price fits your budget. Wait if your current Mac is adequate and you specifically want a newer generation. An M5 Mac Studio has not been officially announced as of August 10, 2026, and reported release timing is unconfirmed.
The Bottom Line
The Mac Studio is worth buying in 2026 when you need a quiet, powerful, fixed-desk macOS workstation and can use its sustained performance, ports, memory, or display support. For most buyers, choose the M4 Max. It is newer in architecture, strong in interactive work, and far less expensive than the M3 Ultra. Choose the M3 Ultra only for genuinely memory-heavy, GPU-parallel, multicore, display-intensive, or local-AI workloads where its extra capability directly saves time or enables work the M4 Max cannot handle.
Recommended Free Tools
At $2,499 and $5,299 before accessories, the Studio is no longer an automatic value recommendation. Consider a Mac mini for ordinary work, an M5 Max MacBook Pro for portability, or a Windows workstation for CUDA, gaming, expandability, and native Windows software. If your current Mac is still sufficient, waiting for Apple’s next officially announced Studio is the safer financial decision.
