If Spotlight is missing results after your Mac wakes, check indexing and rebuild the affected disk or folder if necessary. If Touch ID asks for your password, first check whether macOS requires password reauthentication; that prompt does not by itself mean Touch ID is broken. Apple describes indexing and Touch ID as separate systems, so the two symptoms appearing together do not establish a single cause.
First identify what is failing
Spotlight and Touch ID can cause trouble around the same time, but they do different jobs. Spotlight searches an index that updates as files and other data change. Touch ID authenticates your login and can unlock a Mac after sleep when it is configured. Apple notes that indexing can affect whether a Mac sleeps, but does not say indexing causes Touch ID failures.
- Spotlight problem: Search results are missing, incomplete, or not up to date.
- Touch ID prompt: macOS asks for the account password instead of accepting a fingerprint.
- Fingerprint rejection: Touch ID is available, but does not recognize a finger.
- Login-window problem: The Mac may have restarted or logged out rather than merely waking from sleep.
Note whether the Mac actually restarted or logged out, and whether Touch ID is built into the Mac or on an external Magic Keyboard. Those details determine which steps apply.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix missing or incomplete Spotlight results
Check search settings and indexing progress
- Open Apple menu > System Settings, then choose Spotlight or Siri & Spotlight, depending on your macOS version.
- Check that the category for the items you want to find is enabled.
- Press Command–Space to open Spotlight. If indexing is underway, Apple says a progress indicator may appear at the top of the Spotlight or Siri window.
Indexing can take hours or days depending on how much data the Mac needs to process. Apple says it completes faster when the Mac is idle and connected to power; an internet connection may also be needed for data such as email to download.

Rebuild the index for the affected disk or folder
If search remains stubbornly incomplete, Apple’s documented method is to remove the affected location from Spotlight’s index and then add it back by way of the privacy list. This can help with certain files on a disk or in a folder; it is not a guaranteed fix for every search problem.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Spotlight or Siri & Spotlight.
- Scroll to Search Privacy or Spotlight Privacy.
- Add the affected disk or folder to the list of excluded locations.
- Wait a few seconds, select that location in the list, and remove it.
- Click Done, then quit System Settings. Spotlight will reindex the location.
If macOS reports an unknown or permissions error, your account may lack ownership permissions for some items. Apple’s procedure is the appropriate first step; avoid treating Terminal commands as a required starting point.

Understand why Touch ID may ask for your password
A password prompt after waking does not necessarily mean the sensor has failed. Touch ID can unlock a Mac after sleep once you have logged in with your password, but Apple requires a password in specific security situations.
- After the Mac starts up or restarts, or after you log out, you must enter the password before using Touch ID again.
- A password may be required if you have not unlocked the Mac for more than 48 hours.
- macOS may require a password after a change to Touch ID settings.
- Five consecutive failed fingerprint attempts can require password entry.
- Automatic login is another situation in which manual password entry may be required.
If you entered your password after a restart and Touch ID still repeatedly rejects your fingerprint on subsequent unlocks, continue with the checks below.

Check Touch ID settings and the sensor
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Touch ID & Password.
- Confirm Use Touch ID to unlock your Mac is enabled. If Touch ID works for other functions but not unlocking, check that the unlock option itself is on.
- Make sure the finger and the Touch ID sensor are clean and dry, then try again.
Try Apple’s general Touch ID fixes
- Install the latest macOS updates available for your Mac.
- Restart the Mac.
- In System Settings > Touch ID & Password, delete and re-add the fingerprint, or add a different finger and test it.
If the issue persists, note whether Touch ID fails only after sleep or also in other supported uses. That distinction can help Apple Support or a qualified Mac service provider assess the problem without assuming a particular part has failed.
If you use an external Magic Keyboard with Touch ID
Compatibility depends on the keyboard connector and the Mac. Apple’s documented requirements are:

When to get help
If Spotlight still cannot find items after the relevant index is rebuilt, or Touch ID continues to fail after the settings, sensor, update, restart, and fingerprint checks, contact Apple Support or a qualified Mac service provider. These symptoms alone do not identify a replacement part.
