Yes. In an April 2026 project, developer Bryan Keller demonstrated Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah booting natively on a Nintendo Wii through the wiiMac bootloader—not running inside an emulator. It is an experimental port for a software-modded Wii that can run BootMii, with SD-card storage, wired USB keyboard and mouse support, and non-accelerated video. It is a proof of concept, not a practical replacement for a Mac.

What the Wii port does—and does not do

wiiMac is a bootloader project intended to start PowerPC versions of Mac OS X on Nintendo Wii hardware. Keller’s April 8, 2026, demonstration runs the original Mac OS X release, version 10.0 Cheetah. The achievement is a native boot on the Wii’s PowerPC-based hardware, rather than a Mac desktop simulated by software.

That distinction does not mean Cheetah has broad Wii hardware support. The author describes support for SD storage, USB mice and keyboards, and video output without graphics acceleration. The result is most relevant to homebrew, operating-system porting, and retro-computing enthusiasts.

What you need to try it

  • A compatible Wii: It must be software-modded and capable of running BootMii. The Wii Mini is not supported.
  • An SD card of at least 4 GB: The project specifies this minimum for the Cheetah image.
  • A computer and SD-card imaging utility: You need to write the supplied wiiMac_cheetah.img image to the card.
  • Wired USB input: The stated input support is for USB mice and keyboards. The project does not establish support for every peripheral or wireless device.
  • Realistic expectations: The graphics are non-accelerated, and the available reports do not give a performance benchmark or frame-rate figure.

How to install Mac OS X Cheetah on a Wii

The published setup is based on writing a prepared disk image to an SD card. The available project details specify the image name and minimum card capacity, but not a universal imaging app, exact menu path, or complete boot procedure; those can depend on the Wii’s existing mod setup. Use the project’s own current instructions for those specifics rather than guessing at a menu sequence.

Nintendo Wii Console, White Premium Bundle (Renewed)
  • Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
  • Tested and works well. Nice condition
  1. Check the console first. Confirm that your Wii is software-modded and can run BootMii. Do not assume every Wii model or mod configuration qualifies; the Wii Mini is explicitly unsupported.
  2. Back up the SD card. Writing an image replaces the card’s existing contents. Copy anything you need elsewhere before proceeding.
  3. Prepare a card with at least 4 GB of capacity. The project names wiiMac_cheetah.img as the image to write. Follow the wiiMac project’s instructions for obtaining and imaging it.
  4. Boot using the project’s documented procedure. Insert the prepared card and follow the wiiMac instructions for starting the system on a BootMii-capable Wii. The published setup information summarized here does not establish a one-size-fits-all sequence of button presses or menus.

If the card contains files you did not back up, stop before imaging it: the write operation will overwrite them. If the console cannot run BootMii, or is a Wii Mini, this setup is not supported by the stated requirements.

How wiiMac starts Mac OS X

The port adapts the early PowerPC startup chain so Mac OS X can initialize on Wii hardware. Open Firmware provides the device tree and loads BootX; BootX then loads the Mach-O XNU kernel. XNU takes over initialization of the processor, virtual memory, IOKit, BSD, and user-space executables.

  • Built-in Wi-Fi Access For Easy Connection To Internet

Making that sequence work required more than launching an existing Mac OS X disc. Keller’s technical account describes patches for assumptions in period XNU code that conflict with the Wii’s memory layout, including its BAT configuration and MEM1/MEM2 address map. The port also adds Wii-specific code for hardware detection, device-tree construction, storage, drawing, and hardware communication.

What works, and what remains limited

Area Stated support or limitation What it means for a user
Storage SD storage; image requires an SD card of at least 4 GB The prepared card is central to the published setup.
Input USB mice and keyboards Use wired USB devices; support for every model is not established.
Video Framebuffer-based, non-accelerated output The port can draw to the display, but this is not hardware-accelerated Mac graphics.
Console compatibility Software-modded Wii able to run BootMii; Wii Mini unsupported Check compatibility before preparing the card.

Graphics also needed a conversion bridge because the Wii’s video hardware and Mac OS X graphics code represent color differently. Early output was reported as magenta before that issue was addressed. The project’s stated non-accelerated video support remains an important limit; no published independent benchmark, frame rate, or success-rate statistic establishes how fast or consistently the system runs.

Why the port matters

The interesting part is the engineering path: adapting a period Mac OS X kernel and boot sequence to a console with a different memory map and graphics hardware, then adding enough device support for basic input, storage, and display. Booting Cheetah natively on Wii hardware is a substantial homebrew milestone even though the resulting system is not a general-purpose Mac.

For someone deciding whether to try it, the practical checks are straightforward: the console must run BootMii, the Wii Mini is out, the SD card must be at least 4 GB, and the expected graphics are non-accelerated. The main reason to attempt it is experimentation—not everyday computing.
