Apple says M6 is faster than the base M5: its selected tests show up to 1.2× higher multithreaded CPU performance, nearly 30% higher peak GPU compute for AI, up to 2× peak Neural Engine compute, and 10% more unified memory bandwidth. Those figures are not a controlled chip-only comparison: Apple tested M6 in a preproduction Mac mini and M5 in a MacBook Pro. For a purchase, compare the whole computer and your workload—not just the chip name.

What changes from M5 to M6?

M6 is Apple’s first 2 nm chip and a confirmed generational step beyond the base M5. Apple describes it as having a new 12-core CPU complex, a 12-core GPU with a Neural Accelerator in each GPU core, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. The M5 MacBook Pro used in Apple’s comparison had a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. Those are the configurations in the comparison, not a statement that every M5 system has those core counts.

Comparison point M6 M5 comparison system What it means
Manufacturing process Apple’s first 2 nm chip Prior base generation; Apple announced M5 in 2025 Process claims are Apple’s descriptions.
CPU 12 cores: 2 super, 4 performance, 6 efficiency 10-core CPU in Apple’s test MacBook Pro Core counts identify the tested systems and do not establish every M5 configuration.
GPU 12 cores, each with a Neural Accelerator 10-core GPU in Apple’s test MacBook Pro Apple’s near-30% claim is specifically about peak GPU compute for AI, not all graphics work.
Neural Engine Dual 16-core Neural Engine Apple states up to 2× peak compute over the previous generation Peak throughput does not establish an application’s speedup.
Unified memory bandwidth Up to 170 GB/s; Apple says 10% above M5 Comparison baseline “Up to” is a maximum, not a guarantee that every configuration operates at that figure.

Apple also announced M5 Ultra, but that is a different chip tier and is not part of the base M6-versus-M5 comparison here.

How much faster is M6, according to Apple?

Apple’s headline M6-versus-M5 results are selective measures, not a universal performance multiplier:

  • Multithreaded CPU: up to 1.2× faster than M5.
  • Peak GPU compute for AI: nearly 30% higher than M5.
  • Peak Neural Engine compute: up to 2× the previous generation.
  • Unified memory bandwidth: up to 170 GB/s, described by Apple as 10% higher than M5.

The distinction between the two AI figures matters. The GPU’s Neural Accelerators and the Neural Engine are separate resources; an app’s results depend on which hardware it uses, as well as software support and the task. Peak compute claims alone do not show that a particular AI app will run faster or support a given feature.

Why the performance figures are not a chip-only verdict

Apple says it ran the comparison in August 2026 using selected industry-standard benchmarks. Its footnote identifies a preproduction Mac mini with M6, a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, and 32 GB of memory; an M5 14-inch MacBook Pro with a 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, and 32 GB of memory; and an M1 Mac mini with an 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, and 16 GB of memory. Apple says the results reflect approximate Mac mini performance.

Because the M6 and M5 were tested in different computer models, the results are platform-level claims: they compare complete systems, not two chips installed in otherwise identical hardware. The available comparison does not establish an independent, controlled M6-versus-M5 result. Treat Apple’s figures as useful direction, not a promise that every M6 computer or application will be that much faster.

Don’t mistake M6 Mac mini results against older chips for M6-versus-M5 results

Apple also reported Mac mini with M6 results against M1 and M4: up to 13.5× faster LLM prompt processing in LM Studio versus M1 and up to 4.8× versus M4; up to 2.3× faster spreadsheet calculations in Microsoft Excel versus M1 and up to 1.5× versus M4; and up to 2× faster gaming with ray tracing in Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition versus M4. These are Apple’s workload-specific Mac mini system comparisons, not M6-versus-M5 measurements.

What should you compare before buying?

M6 first appeared in Mac mini. Apple’s August 25, 2026 launch announcement listed the M6 Mac mini at a U.S. starting price of $899, with 16 GB of unified memory standard and configurations up to 32 GB. Apple said customer availability would begin September 22, 2026. The announced starting price is launch context, not a guarantee of the current price.

The same Mac mini announcement offers M5 Pro as a higher-tier alternative, not as the base M5 used in the generational comparison. The M5 Pro Mac mini starts at $1,699 U.S. in the announcement, supports up to 64 GB of unified memory and 307 GB/s bandwidth. M6 and M5 Pro therefore differ in tier, memory ceiling, bandwidth, and system features; a comparison between them answers a different question from M6 versus base M5.

Match the system to your work

  • Everyday use and light work: prioritize the complete system’s price, memory, storage, and ports. Apple’s headline multicore figure alone cannot tell you whether an upgrade is worthwhile for your particular apps.
  • Sustained multicore work: compare the actual machines, not just CPU core counts. Cooling and system design are part of the performance you experience, and Apple’s M6 and M5 test systems were different models.
  • Graphics and gaming: distinguish general graphics performance from Apple’s specific peak GPU compute-for-AI claim. The near-30% figure is not a general gaming or rendering benchmark.
  • Local AI: check whether your application uses the GPU’s Neural Accelerators, the Neural Engine, or another path, and whether its workload fits the available memory. The peak compute claims do not establish app compatibility or a user-visible speedup.

Check the rest of the Mac mini

On the announced M6 Mac mini, Apple lists Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, 2.5Gb Ethernet with a 10Gb option, and Thunderbolt 4. The M5 Pro Mac mini has Thunderbolt 5. If your work depends on networking or high-speed peripherals, these system-level differences may be more consequential than an aggregate chip comparison.

Should you buy an M5 Mac or choose M6?

Choose based on the specific M5 model, M6 system, configuration, and price available to you. M6 is the newer base-generation chip and Apple’s figures point to gains in multithreaded CPU performance, peak AI compute, and memory bandwidth. But the published comparison does not isolate the chip from the computer, and an M5 Pro is a different performance tier from base M5.

  1. Identify the exact chip tier. Separate base M5 from M5 Pro; do not read the M5 Pro Mac mini as the M5 comparator in Apple’s figures.
  2. Set your workload. Decide whether you care most about multicore CPU work, graphics, local AI, memory capacity, networking, or peripherals.
  3. Compare complete configurations. Check memory capacity and bandwidth, storage, ports, and the computers’ overall design alongside the chip.
  4. Compare the actual prices. Use the price of the configurations you can buy now; the $899 M6 Mac mini figure is the U.S. launch-announcement starting price.

If your decision hinges on a particular professional app or game, seek a benchmark for that workload on the exact systems you are considering. Apple’s published headline numbers establish its selected-test claims, but not how much faster every M6 setup will feel than every M5 setup.
