The $999 U.S. launch configuration of Apple’s 11-inch M5 iPad Pro has 12GB of unified memory—not 16GB. The 512GB model also has 12GB; Apple lists 16GB only on the 1TB and 2TB versions. That is a tiered configuration, not a 12GB limit across the entire M5 lineup, and the entry model has more memory than the equivalent M4 version did.
How much memory does the M5 iPad Pro have?
Apple lists memory by storage configuration. The 256GB and 512GB M5 models have 12GB of unified memory; the 1TB and 2TB models have 16GB. Apple’s specifications also pair the two higher-storage configurations with a 10-core CPU, compared with a 9-core CPU in the 256GB and 512GB configurations. So moving to 1TB changes more than storage capacity. Apple’s M5 iPad Pro specifications show the configuration split.

The M4 figures are from Apple’s M4 iPad Pro specifications. Apple’s terminology differs between the cited pages—“RAM” for M4 and “unified memory” for M5—so the table preserves the wording of each specification.

Apple announced the M5 iPad Pro on October 15, 2025, with U.S. launch prices starting at $999 for the 11-inch Wi-Fi model and $1,299 for the 13-inch Wi-Fi model. Store availability began October 22, 2025. The $999 is a launch starting price, not a current retailer quote or a price for every size and connectivity option. Apple also listed the 11-inch Wi-Fi + Cellular model at $1,199 and the 13-inch Wi-Fi + Cellular model at $1,499. Education starting prices were $899 for 11-inch and $1,199 for 13-inch. Prices can vary by date, retailer, and configuration. Apple’s launch announcement gives those prices and dates.

The title’s “glass ceiling” is therefore a shorthand for the memory on the lower-storage models. Apple did not discontinue the iPad Pro or cap every M5 configuration at 12GB. The $999 11-inch model offers 12GB, while spending more for a 1TB or 2TB model gets 16GB and a 10-core CPU.
How the M5 memory tiers compare with M4
The lower M5 tiers have more memory than their M4 counterparts: 12GB instead of 8GB at both 256GB and 512GB. The upper tiers remain at 16GB across both generations. It is inaccurate to describe the M5 base model as having less memory than the M4; the difference is that 16GB continues to be reserved for the 1TB and 2TB configurations.

Is 12GB enough for an iPad Pro?
Apple’s published specifications establish how much memory each model has, but they do not define a workload threshold where 12GB becomes insufficient. Without an independent test tied to particular iPad tasks, it would be misleading to promise that 12GB is enough—or to say that it is not.

- Choose 256GB or 512GB if that storage capacity suits your files and apps and you want an M5 iPad Pro without paying for the higher tier. Both have 12GB unified memory and a 9-core CPU.
- Consider 1TB or 2TB if you need that storage and want the configuration Apple lists with 16GB unified memory and a 10-core CPU. Apple ties these specifications to the selected model; the memory is not presented as a separate upgrade.
- Compare generations carefully if you are weighing an M4 against an M5: the M5 lower tiers add 4GB over the matching M4 tiers, while both generations’ 1TB and 2TB tiers list 16GB.
What Apple says about M5 memory bandwidth
Apple says the M5 provides more than 150GB/s of unified memory bandwidth, nearly 30 percent higher than the previous generation, and presents the increase as beneficial for multitasking and AI processing. This is Apple’s claim, not an independently reproduced benchmark. The company says its product testing took place in August and September 2025. Apple’s announcement contains the bandwidth claim and testing qualification.

Apple lists Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) as compatible with the M5 iPad Pro. At launch in the U.S., Apple listed Pencil Pro at $129 and Pencil USB-C at $79. The 11-inch Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro was listed at $299, and the new 13-inch version at $349. These optional accessories may matter when budgeting for note-taking, illustration, or a keyboard-equipped setup, but they do not change the iPad’s memory configuration. Launch prices are not live quotes. Apple’s announcement lists compatibility and launch pricing.
