The M4 MacBook Air is a mixed repairability case: iFixit gave it a provisional 5 out of 10, citing difficult access to several parts, but found a standout improvement in its modular, replaceable MagSafe and USB-C ports. Battery disconnection is also relatively accessible; removing the battery itself is still an adhesive job.
What iFixit’s M4 MacBook Air teardown found
iFixit’s March 14, 2025 teardown assigned the M4 MacBook Air a provisional 5 out of 10 for repairability. That is iFixit’s assessment, not a universal industry or regulatory rating. The organization says its rubric changes over time, so scores from different versions should not be treated as perfectly comparable. See iFixit’s repairability score methodology.
The teardown concerns Apple’s 2025 M4 generation. The 13-inch model is identified as A3240, with a 13.6-inch display, a 53.8 Wh battery, two USB-C/Thunderbolt ports, and MagSafe 3. Confirm whether a machine is the 13-inch or 15-inch model before following a procedure or ordering model-specific parts. iFixit’s 13-inch M4 repair page lists the model details.

Its 2025 coverage also noted launch-era changes including more processing cores, a base unified-memory increase from 8 GB to 16 GB, a 4K camera instead of 1080p, and a $100 launch-price reduction. The reported $999 starting price for the 13-inch model was a launch figure, not current pricing. iFixit describes the display as a 60 Hz Liquid Retina LCD.

Why the ports are the teardown’s bright spot
iFixit found the MagSafe and USB-C ports comparatively accessible and replaceable as modular components. That matters because ports are high-wear parts: a damaged connector does not necessarily mean replacing the logic board. iFixit called the modular approach “nearly best-in-class,” while noting that some competing laptop designs make port replacement easier.
This is the clearest repairability improvement in the teardown. It does not mean every port repair is simple, but it does make these components a stronger point than the Air’s more deeply buried parts.

Can you replace the M4 MacBook Air battery yourself?
The first battery step is favorable: after the bottom cover is removed, the battery connector is accessible without removing the logic board. Disconnecting the battery before working on other components is therefore less obstructed than in the M2 design iFixit compares.

It is held by stretch-release adhesive, not screws. iFixit describes four strips arranged in pairs that curve back on themselves; its account of Apple’s instructions says to pull the pairs together. If a tab breaks, iFixit says isopropyl alcohol can help loosen the remaining adhesive. These details make battery isolation relatively convenient, but do not make battery extraction an easy or risk-free task.

Display replacement: physical access and calibration are separate hurdles
iFixit says replacing the display is possible, but access involves multiple steps. Antenna sections obstruct movement of the hinges, complicating removal and installation.
There is also a configuration issue to keep distinct from the physical repair. In iFixit’s reported test, System Configuration failed to calibrate the ambient light sensor after a logic-board swap between two identical M4 Airs, and True Tone stopped working. The report describes that particular test; it does not establish that every display replacement, third-party screen, or repair will disable True Tone. In that case, the manual directed the repairer to contact the Self Service Repair Store team about the error.

Why keyboard and Touch ID repairs are harder
Keyboard
The keyboard sits beneath virtually every other component, so reaching it requires substantial disassembly. iFixit also says it is attached to a milled aluminum section, which makes replacement costly and laborious compared with swapping a readily accessible module.
Touch ID and power button
The Touch ID/power button is below the logic board and paired to it for security, adding a configuration constraint to the physical access problem. iFixit did not test the Touch ID reset procedure through a logic-board swap. It reports that Apple’s manual points to System Configuration when using a button sourced through Self Service Repair; that route should not be mistaken for a verified result across all repair scenarios.

Apple’s repair manual and tools
Apple publishes a 13-inch M4 (2025) MacBook Air repair manual with safety information, troubleshooting, orderable parts, tools, and procedures. Its covered work includes the bottom case, battery, display hinge covers, trackpad, USB-C boards, speakers, MagSafe board, audio board, display, logic board, Touch ID board, and top case with keyboard. The manual is useful documentation, but following a procedure does not remove the practical difficulty of adhesive removal, deep disassembly, or post-repair configuration.
Apple’s 13-inch and 15-inch M4 MacBook Air tools page, published June 22, 2026, lists equipment such as a Pentalobe screwdriver, Torx Plus bits, torque drivers, ESD protection, tweezers, and model-specific battery adhesive items. Apple says tools with Apple part numbers are available through the Self Service Repair Store; tools without part numbers can be sourced from electronics supply retailers. Store eligibility, parts, and tool availability may vary by region.
If assembling tools, a precision driver set is only a starting point: check the bit types and sizes against Apple’s procedure and verify compatibility with the exact model. A generic toolkit should not be assumed sufficient for battery, screen, or board-level work.
