Messier 30 (M30), also catalogued as NGC 7099, is a dense globular cluster in Capricornus, about 28,000 light-years from Earth. NASA lists its apparent magnitude as 7.7 and says it is best observed in October. Binoculars can show the cluster as a compact object; a telescope’s greater magnification can reveal more stars and detail in its crowded center.
What is M30?
M30 is a globular cluster: a tightly packed, roughly spherical collection of stars bound by gravity. NASA describes it as a dense swarm of several hundred thousand stars. Its concentration is especially apparent toward the center, where stars crowd together.
NASA places M30 about 28,000 light-years from Earth. Its listed apparent magnitude is 7.7, and NASA Science says, “M30 is best observed during October.” These are useful guides to the target, not a guarantee that it will be visible from every location or under every sky condition.

Where can I find M30 tonight?
Look for M30 in Capricornus. Its position in the sky changes over the course of a night and its visibility depends on where you are, so a universal clock time or star-hopping direction would be misleading. Check a current sky chart or planetarium app set to your observing location, date, and local time; use it to locate Capricornus and then the cluster.

A September 2026 observing guide gives a location-specific example near Zeta Capricorni, but that is not a universal schedule or direction for every observer on October 9. Use nearby-star directions only when they are calculated for your location and observing time.
Can you see M30 with binoculars?
Yes. NASA Science says, “It has an apparent magnitude of 7.7 and can be seen through a pair of binoculars.” Expect a small, compact-looking object rather than a view of individual stars. Dark, transparent skies and a steady hold make the search easier.

A telescope at higher magnification can show more detail and more stars in M30’s crowded center. The difference is a matter of how much structure you can pick out: binoculars make the target accessible, while greater magnification offers a closer view. Individual-star resolution is not promised for binoculars.
How old is M30?
A 2013 study by Kains and colleagues estimated M30’s age at 13.0 ± 1.0 billion years. The authors derived this estimate by fitting isochrones to a color-magnitude diagram. It is a study result with uncertainty, not an exact or undisputed age; estimates can differ as stellar-evolution models, photometry, and calibration methods vary.

Why does M30 contain blue stragglers?
Hubble observations identified blue stragglers in M30—stars that appear bluer and brighter than expected for their position in the cluster’s normal stellar aging pattern. NASA describes two possible formation channels: stars can collide in near head-on encounters, or a star in a binary system can siphon hydrogen from its more massive companion. The cluster’s dense environment makes stellar encounters relevant, while mass transfer offers a separate route.
