Amazon Macie answers two questions for anyone storing data in Amazon S3: does sensitive information sit in these buckets, and do the buckets themselves have security or access-control problems? It is an AWS data security service scoped to S3, so it does not try to cover every place data lives. Midhun Krishna B’s beginner article on DEV Community, published September 16, 2026, introduces the service through a college-data example and a simple idea: S3 holds the data, and Macie helps you understand what that data is and how exposed the storage is. This guide walks through that same idea with the service details, limits, and costs a beginner needs before trying it.
What Amazon Macie actually does
Macie does three jobs within S3. It maintains an inventory of your general-purpose S3 buckets, it evaluates those buckets for security and access-control issues, and it helps discover sensitive information inside eligible objects by combining machine learning with pattern matching. When it spots a potential bucket security or privacy problem, or sensitive data inside an object, it creates a finding for you to review.
The author’s own summary of the division of labor is the clearest way to hold it in mind: “S3 stores the data, while Macie helps us understand whether sensitive data exists there and whether the S3 environment has security risks.” That sentence is the article author’s description of the service, not an AWS product statement, but it matches how the service is documented.
Two ways Macie looks for sensitive data
Macie offers two discovery approaches. They overlap in purpose but differ in breadth, control, and cost, so it helps to know which one you are running.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Automated sensitive-data discovery
Automated discovery gives broad visibility across your S3 inventory. It works by sampling representative eligible objects rather than reading every file, so it is a way to see where sensitive data is likely to live, not a guarantee that each object has been inspected.
Discovery jobs
A discovery job is a targeted analysis you define. You specify which buckets to analyze and the object criteria that apply, and you can run the job once or on a recurring schedule. Jobs suit cases where you already know which data store matters, such as a bucket that receives student records.
| Aspect | Automated sensitive-data discovery | Discovery jobs |
|---|---|---|
| Breadth | Broad, across the S3 inventory, based on representative sampled objects | Limited to the buckets and criteria you choose |
| Who sets scope | Macie-driven sampling | You, through bucket and object criteria |
| Run pattern | Ongoing visibility | One-time or recurring, as scheduled |
| Cost basis | Object monitoring for automated discovery is a separate pricing component | Object analysis for sensitive-data discovery is a separate pricing component; exact rates not stated here |
Neither method replaces the other in every environment. Use automated discovery to get a map, and jobs to go deeper into the parts of that map you care about.

How Macie recognizes sensitive data
Detection depends on identifiers, which are the rules Macie applies to text in objects. Three concepts matter here.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Managed data identifiers
Macie ships with managed data identifiers for many categories of sensitive information, including personal, financial, and credential data. You do not write these yourself, which makes them the starting point for most users.
Custom data identifiers
When your data has its own patterns, such as an internal student ID format, you can add custom data identifiers. Each one is defined by a regular expression and can include optional refining criteria that narrow down matches. Custom identifiers extend coverage; they do not replace managed ones.
Rank #3
- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Allow lists
Allow lists exclude known text or patterns from analysis. Use them for values that are sensitive-looking but expected, such as a sample test number in a training dataset, so they stop generating noise in your findings.
Findings and where they go
A Macie finding describes either detected sensitive data or a potential bucket security or privacy issue, with enough detail to start an investigation. Macie publishes findings to Amazon EventBridge, so you can route them into monitoring or automated processing. It can also publish findings to AWS Security Hub CSPM, which places them alongside other signals about the security posture of your AWS environment.
For a single beginner account, EventBridge and Security Hub CSPM are the two integration paths to know about. Setting up either one is a separate step from enabling Macie itself.
Rank #4
- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
What Macie can and cannot analyze
Coverage is narrower than many readers expect. Macie analyzes only objects in general-purpose S3 buckets, and only objects that use supported storage classes and supported file or storage formats. Objects in unsupported formats, or objects that cannot be classified, are not eligible for analysis. If a format matters to your project, check AWS’s current list of supported formats before assuming it will be scanned.
Free trial, free allowance, and charges
Pricing has three parts: a documented trial, a monthly free allowance, and charges after that. These figures come from AWS documentation checked October 7, 2026, and they can change, so confirm them on the AWS pricing page before you plan a budget.
| Item | What it covers | Limits and conditions |
|---|---|---|
| 30-day free trial | Applicable bucket monitoring and, depending on settings, automated sensitive-data discovery | Starts when an account first enables Macie; does not include discovery jobs |
| Monthly free allowance | Analyzing up to 1 GB of S3 data for sensitive-data discovery | Per month; charges can accrue after the allowance is used |
| Paid usage | Bucket security and access monitoring, object monitoring for automated discovery, and object analysis for sensitive-data discovery | Rates depend on your Region and usage; not stated in this article |
Macie charges are not the whole bill. Other AWS services you use alongside Macie, such as EventBridge, Security Hub CSPM, or storage itself, can add their own costs.

Trying Macie as a student or beginner
The original article recommends a hands-on exercise with sample data, and that is a sound approach for learning. Keep the following in mind before you start:
- Use synthetic data that looks like your dataset but contains no real personal information. A fake student roster is enough to see how identifiers behave.
- Confirm that your test objects are in a general-purpose S3 bucket and use a format on AWS’s supported list.
- Decide whether you want automated discovery, a discovery job, or both, and note that the trial does not include discovery jobs.
- Check the trial and free-allowance terms on your account before you upload anything, and set a reminder to review charges.
- Delete test buckets and objects when you finish, so you do not keep paying for storage or analysis you no longer need.
The article’s sample-data suggestion is a practical teaching choice rather than a validated security control. Treat it as a learning method, not as evidence that a production bucket is secure.
Frequently misunderstood points
Readers new to Macie often assume it is a complete data loss prevention product for AWS. It is narrower than that: it focuses on sensitive data and security posture within S3. Readers also often assume a finding means a confirmed breach. A finding is a signal for review, and whether it represents a real exposure depends on what you find when you investigate it.
If the goal is to answer the article’s question, “How do we know whether sensitive information is stored securely?”, Macie gives you the inventory, the sensitive-data signals, and the bucket-level warnings. Deciding whether storage is secure still requires reviewing those findings and your own access policies.
