Luxury space tourism is not one kind of trip: Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic market suborbital experiences, while an orbital private-astronaut mission travels to the International Space Station. Neither a booking-interest form nor a NASA mission order guarantees that a seat is currently for sale. As of October 5, 2026, public fare information is incomplete and flight dates remain subject to change.
Suborbital tourism is not a trip into orbit
Suborbital vehicles cross into space and return without entering Earth orbit. These flights offer a brief spaceflight experience, but they are not orbital journeys. An orbital mission follows a different profile and can take private astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS).
The distinction matters when comparing price, preparation and availability. A company advertising a passenger expedition is not necessarily offering an orbital ticket, and a planned ISS mission is not automatically a retail product.

Availability is the least settled part of the market. Company pages, reported schedule targets and government mission announcements describe different things; none alone confirms that a passenger can buy a seat for a particular flight.

Blue Origin’s New Shepard
Blue Origin describes New Shepard as a suborbital passenger experience, with astronaut training at Astronaut Village near Launch Site One in Texas. The company says its on-site training lasts two days and covers the mission profile, safety systems, zero-gravity protocols and simulations. Its page also says the crew escape system has been successfully tested three times. These are Blue Origin’s statements, not independent evaluations of the system.
The FAA’s passenger-recognition roster records New Shepard flight NS-38 at Launch Site One on January 22, 2026. That record confirms a flight date; it is not a booking calendar. The reviewed Blue Origin passenger page did not state a current flight schedule, seat availability or standard fare.

- Collector quality
- 1/235 scale model
- Sturdy display stand
- Authentic, detailed replica
- Designed for collectors ages 14 & Up
Blue Origin also says nearly 99% of New Shepard’s dry mass is reused and that the engine’s only combustion byproduct is water vapor. Those are company claims about the vehicle and engine, not an independently established lifecycle assessment of the overall environmental impact of a flight.

Virgin Galactic
Virgin Galactic markets suborbital astronaut expeditions and separately promotes research missions. Its public site invited visitors to register interest in a Fall 2026 booking release when reviewed. Registration of interest is not confirmation that seats are on sale or that a flight date is secured.

A Space.com report published August 13, 2026, quoted CEO Michael Colglazier saying the first flight of the company’s new spaceship had moved to February 2027 to allow more time for avionics and systems installations. Treat February 2027 as the reported target, not a guaranteed departure date.
Orbital private-astronaut missions
NASA and Axiom Space have an order for a fifth private astronaut mission to the ISS, targeted to launch no earlier than January 2027 from Kennedy Space Center. NASA also lists a Vast mission targeted no earlier than summer 2027 and a Voyager Technologies mission targeted no earlier than 2028. These are program and mission targets, not offers to buy a tourist seat. The NASA information does not state a retail fare.

How the announced options compare
| Option | Flight profile | Price information | Availability or schedule information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue Origin New Shepard | Suborbital passenger experience, according to Blue Origin | Standard fare not stated on the reviewed Blue Origin passenger page | FAA roster records NS-38 on January 22, 2026; the reviewed passenger page did not state a current schedule or seat availability |
| Virgin Galactic | Suborbital astronaut expedition | Space.com reported a prior fare of $750,000; Virgin Galactic had not stated its next fare in that report | Company site invited interest in a Fall 2026 booking release; Space.com reported on August 13, 2026, that the next commercial flight target had moved to February 2027 |
| Axiom Space private astronaut mission | Orbital mission to the ISS | Retail fare not stated by NASA’s mission announcement | NASA’s fifth Axiom mission target is no earlier than January 2027; this is a mission target, not a consumer booking offer |
Sources for the table: Blue Origin’s New Shepard passenger page; FAA passenger-recognition roster; Virgin Galactic’s public site; Space.com’s August 13, 2026 report; and NASA’s private astronaut mission information. These sources describe different kinds of evidence: operator statements, a recorded flight, a booking-interest invitation, reported company guidance and government mission targets.
How much does a space tourism ticket cost?
The latest substantiated Virgin Galactic fare in the reviewed reporting is a prior price of $750,000. Space.com said the company had not disclosed its next fare. The report also described earlier fare points of $600,000 and $450,000; those historical amounts do not establish today’s price or an available seat.

The reviewed evidence does not establish Blue Origin’s standard fare. An auction result or press estimate should not be treated as the company’s published standard price. NASA’s mission information likewise does not state a retail fare for the planned Axiom mission. For any prospective purchase, seek a current price and written confirmation of what it covers directly from the operator.
What does FAA oversight cover?
The Federal Aviation Administration says its human-spaceflight responsibilities are designed to protect people on the ground and other users of the National Airspace System. Congress, with few exceptions, limits the FAA’s regulatory oversight of the health and safety of commercial human-spaceflight occupants. The FAA’s framework is therefore not equivalent to airline-style certification of passenger safety.
FAA rules address crew qualifications and training, including normal, emergency and abort situations, as well as requirements involving life support, smoke detection and fire suppression. Federal law also requires an informed-consent framework: participants must receive information about launch and reentry risks and hazards.

The reviewed official evidence does not provide a comparable passenger injury or death-rate dataset for these operators. A limited flight record is not enough to establish a comparative safety ranking. Before committing, a passenger should read the operator’s disclosures and ask specific questions about mission risks, emergency procedures, training and the terms of participation.
Quick Recap
What to verify before treating a seat as real
- Flight type: Confirm whether the offer is suborbital or an orbital mission to the ISS.
- Actual sale status: Distinguish an open booking from a form that only registers interest.
- Date status: Ask whether a date is confirmed or remains a target that could move.
- Total price: Get the current fare and the written terms directly from the operator; historical prices and estimates are not current offers.
- Risk and training disclosures: Review the informed-consent materials and understand the operator’s preparation requirements.
