A Ludhiana resident has asked the Punjab governor to arrange a joint safety inspection and repairs to the Gill Road bridge over the Sidhwan Canal near Gill Chowk. The reported damage concerns the retaining wall and railings, but no official engineering assessment establishing the bridge’s structural condition has been reported.
Where is the Gill Road bridge?
The bridge crosses the Sidhwan Canal near Gill Chowk in Ludhiana. News reports describe it as a link between the city and Malerkotla and Patiala. A Punjab Pollution Control Board regional-office page also uses Gill Road Bridge as a geographic boundary landmark; that reference does not identify who owns or maintains the bridge.
Why did a Ludhiana resident write to the Punjab governor?
Hindustan Times reported on October 2, 2026, that social activist Arvind Sharma wrote to the governor seeking an immediate joint safety inspection and faster repairs. According to the report, Sharma’s letter alleged that the retaining wall had badly deteriorated and partially collapsed, leaving reinforcement steel visible, and that temporary clamps supported parts of it. The reported concerns are claims by activists, not findings from an engineering inspection. In separate coverage published October 3, 2026, The Tribune quoted Sharma and activist Kuldeep Singh Khaira describing damage to the retaining structure, exposed steel, and canal-side railings or grills that were damaged or missing. Hindustan Times quoted Sharma’s letter as describing the road as carrying “thousands of vehicles every day.” The report does not provide a traffic count or study, so that wording is an attributed characterization rather than a verified figure.
Has an official inspection confirmed the bridge is unsafe?
The two reports establish that activists raised concerns; they do not provide an official engineering assessment confirming the bridge is structurally unsafe or at risk of failure. They also do not confirm a bridge closure, completed repairs, or a subsequent government response. Hindustan Times said municipal commissioner Ojasvi Alankar did not respond to its calls and texts before that report was published; that does not establish whether a response came later.

How can residents submit a grievance?
Punjab’s Public Grievance Redressal System lists several general channels for public grievances: the connect.punjab.gov.in portal, the m-Sewa app, a Sewa Kendra, and state helpline 1100. The information does not establish that Sharma used these channels or that they are a formal route for his petition.
