Lubuntu 23.04, codenamed “Lunar Lobster,” introduced LXQt 1.2.0 as its default desktop, enabled the Picom compositor by default, included PipeWire, and changed the default screensaver. It was released on April 20, 2023, but reached end of life on January 25, 2024. It no longer receives security or other software updates or technical support, so do not use it for a new installation.
What’s new in Lubuntu 23.04?
Lubuntu 23.04 was the project’s 24th release and its tenth with LXQt as the default desktop environment. Its headline changes concerned the desktop, audio stack, and screensaver; the release also refreshed several bundled applications.
LXQt 1.2.0 by default
The release shipped with LXQt 1.2.0 as its default desktop. Some components later received 1.2.1 point-release updates. LXQt 1.3.0 arrived after Lubuntu 23.04’s feature freeze, so it was not included as the default.

Lubuntu’s release notes highlighted that the X compositor Picom was enabled by default. This affects desktop compositing and presentation; the release information does not establish specific performance or battery-life gains.

PipeWire and a new default screensaver

What should you install instead?
Choose a Lubuntu release that is currently supported rather than installing 23.04. The end-of-life notice recommended Lubuntu 23.10 or Lubuntu 22.04 LTS to users at the time. Those were recommendations made in January 2024, not current-version guidance. Check the project’s supported releases page for current support status before choosing a version.
