LTE Cat 1 is a 4G LTE device capability category—not a separate cellular network. A Cat 1 modem has nominal peak rates of 10 Mbps downlink and 5 Mbps uplink, making it a fit for some mobile IoT devices that need more throughput than narrowband options provide. Those are category-level maximums, not promised real-world speeds.
What LTE Cat 1 means
LTE Cat 1, short for LTE User Equipment (UE) Category 1, describes capabilities supported by a cellular device or modem. The category dates to 3GPP Release 8. A Cat 1 device still needs compatible LTE network access and service; “Cat 1” does not identify a separate radio access network.
GSMA describes Cat 1 as a full LTE category with two RF receiver chains, full-duplex operation, and support for both frequency-division duplexing (FDD) and time-division duplexing (TDD). In FDD, uplink and downlink use separate frequency resources; in TDD, they share a channel at different times. GSMA’s 2016 technical overview gives Cat 1 nominal peak rates of 10 Mbps downlink (network to device) and 5 Mbps uplink (device to network).
What speed to expect from Cat 1
The 10 Mbps downlink and 5 Mbps uplink figures describe the category’s nominal peak capabilities. They are not typical speed-test results or a carrier guarantee. Real throughput depends on network conditions, signal quality, spectrum, device implementation, and congestion; the available evidence does not establish a recent independent field-throughput figure.

As a practical selection guide, AWS positions Cat 1 for full-featured LTE uses such as fleet tracking and voice, including applications needing more than 1 Mbps but less than roughly 5 Mbps. That guidance is not a replacement for the standardized peak-rate figures or a guarantee of service on a particular network.
How Cat 1 compares with other cellular IoT options

Cat 1 became familiar in cellular M2M and IoT, but it is not synonymous with LTE-M. 3GPP’s machine-type communication work addressed making LTE suitable for machine-type communications; LTE-M is a distinct category introduced later. 3GPP’s MTC overview describes that standards context. GSMA’s 2019 expert panel cites mobile M2M gateways, wearables, and streaming audio as examples of Cat 1 uses needing a constant bit rate; these are use cases, not market-share or performance measurements. What Cat 1 bis changes—and what it does not
Cat 1 bis is a related hardware architecture that removes Cat 1’s second receive chain while remaining on standard LTE infrastructure. This can simplify device-side RF hardware, but it does not automatically extend battery life. Energy use also depends on signal conditions, firmware, modem design, traffic, and time spent with the radio active.

Cat 1 and Cat 1 bis may suit mobile or moderate-data applications such as asset tracking and logistics, vehicle telematics, connected equipment, payment terminals, kiosks, mobile M2M gateways, and some wearables. Their appropriateness depends on the actual device, operator, service, and required features; an example use case does not establish support for every deployment.

- Throughput: Determine required uplink and downlink rates, then leave headroom for variable field conditions instead of treating peak rates as guaranteed.
- Mobility: Confirm that the operator and device support the mobility and handover behavior your application needs.
- Power: Assess consumption under the expected traffic pattern, duty cycle, and coverage conditions. Cat 1 or Cat 1 bis alone does not determine battery life.
- Country and network compatibility: Check the module’s LTE band support against the bands used in every deployment market, and verify operator access, SIM or eSIM plan, roaming agreement, and device certification.
- Voice and messaging: If SMS or voice/VoLTE is required, confirm support for the exact device and target carrier. Operator support and certification can affect voice and roaming behavior.
