Use IT firmware on an LSI 9207-8e when Windows needs to see and address individual disks directly. But IT mode does not, by itself, make disks spin down: Windows’ idle-power policy, the HBA driver, the drives, and any enclosure or expander in the path all affect whether standby and wake-up work.
IT mode is the firmware mode for direct disk access
The 9207-8e’s relevant firmware choices are IT (Integrated Target) and IR (Integrated RAID). Broadcom’s guidance distinguishes them by what the operating system sees: IT firmware exports attached drives, while IR firmware masks individual drives and presents RAID arrays. For Windows to control individual disks directly, IT mode is the appropriate choice. That distinction does not establish that IT mode has a special spindown feature or improves spindown performance. Broadcom explains the IT and IR modes; the LSI SAS 9207-8e User Guide covers the card.
| Firmware mode | What Windows can address | Fit for individual-disk access |
|---|---|---|
| IT | Attached drives are exported directly. | Yes |
| IR | Individual drives are masked; RAID arrays are exposed instead. | No, if Windows must address each disk directly |
Why IT firmware alone does not guarantee spindown
Disk visibility and disk power management are separate functions. Microsoft documents that Storport idle power management can issue a SCSI Stop Unit command after an idle interval, in coordination with Windows Power Manager. The Storport miniport driver influences how that command is used, so the firmware mode alone cannot ensure that a particular drive will enter standby. Microsoft’s Storport IPM overview describes this role.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhether a disk actually spins down and wakes again depends on the Windows idle-timeout policy, the HBA miniport and driver, the drive’s behavior, and the complete connection path—including any enclosure or expander. Microsoft also documents a hard-disk idle-timeout policy, but whether it is enabled or honored in a particular setup must be checked rather than assumed. See Microsoft’s hard-disk drive idle-timeout guidance.

Check the card, Windows policy, and full device path
- Confirm the card’s current firmware mode and driver. Verify that the 9207-8e is operating in IT mode and note the installed HBA driver. The 9207-8e User Guide provides card documentation; your exact card identity and installed software matter when choosing firmware.
- Check the Windows hard-disk idle timeout. Confirm the configured timeout and whether the applicable power policy is active. The existence of a Windows policy does not prove that the HBA miniport or the attached devices will carry out the requested transition.
- Test standby and wake through the complete path. Check whether the drive enters standby after the configured idle interval and resumes cleanly when accessed. Include the enclosure or expander in the test if one is present; a successful direct-disk configuration does not prove every downstream component behaves the same way.
- Verify the exact firmware package before flashing. Broadcom’s support page provides product and firmware filters for finding downloads: Broadcom Support Downloads. Select the package for the exact card and follow its release documentation.
Use the historical Dell flash command cautiously
Dell’s historical 9207-8e package page documents a Windows-capable sas2flash workflow and an IT firmware path, including the package-specific command sas2flash -fwall e9207-8e.bin. Treat that as an instruction for that package, not a universal command to run on every 9207-8e. Before flashing, verify the card and subsystem identity, the installed sas2flash version, the firmware image, and the package’s instructions. The Dell driver-details page is historical and does not establish which firmware release is current today.
Allow for spin-up when testing wake-up
Spindown is only useful if the disk can resume reliably. Microsoft’s Idle Power Management Assumptions, updated December 14, 2021, state that a disk spin-up operation is expected to complete within 240 seconds (4 minutes) after SCSI Start Unit is issued to the LUN. This is a driver assumption, not a compatibility guarantee for every drive, HBA, enclosure, or expander combination.
