Lenovo documents a USB-C and Thunderbolt failure affecting specific older ThinkPad models—not Lenovo laptops generally. The fix is to install two model-specific packages in order: the Intel Thunderbolt software/driver package, then the Intel Thunderbolt firmware package. Lenovo lists Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11 64-bit as supported operating systems.

Which Lenovo laptops are affected?

Lenovo’s advisory applies to particular ThinkPad machine types equipped with USB-C or Intel Thunderbolt controllers. The affected model families include:

  • P43s
  • P51 and P51s
  • P52 and P52s
  • P53s
  • P71
  • T470 and T470s
  • T480 and T480s
  • T490 and T490s
  • T570, T580 and T590
  • X1 Carbon 5th, 6th and 7th Generation
  • X1 Yoga 2nd, 3rd and 4th Generation
  • X1 Tablet 3rd Generation
  • X280
  • X380 Yoga
  • X390 and X390 Yoga
  • Yoga 370

The exact machine-type variants matter. A model name alone is not sufficient to select a package, so use Lenovo’s support page for the specific computer. Lenovo says symptoms can develop after six to 12 months of typical use.

Possible symptoms include:

  • The USB-C port stops working.
  • The Intel Thunderbolt controller disappears from Windows or Device Manager.
  • A USB-C or Thunderbolt dock is not detected or repeatedly loses connection.
  • HDMI output through USB-C no longer works.
  • The laptop will not charge from a USB-C power adapter.
  • Intel Thunderbolt pop-up or “safe mode” errors appear.
  • The BIOS displays a Thunderbolt communication error.
  • The computer hangs during POST.

Install both Thunderbolt packages

Lenovo’s documented procedure is not a driver-only update. Install the packages in this order:

#1 Best Overall

Order Package Purpose
1 Driver Package: Intel Thunderbolt software Installs the software/driver package.
2 Firmware Package: Intel Thunderbolt firmware Updates the controller firmware.

Updating the driver without updating the controller’s firmware leaves the documented fix incomplete. A BIOS update alone is also not Lenovo’s stated solution, although a BIOS setting is important to the firmware installer.

Recommended method: Lenovo Vantage

  1. Open Lenovo Vantage from the Start menu.
  2. Open System Update.
  3. Check for updates.
  4. Install the applicable Intel Thunderbolt software/driver package.
  5. Restart if Vantage requests it.
  6. Run System Update again and install the Intel Thunderbolt firmware package.

Keep the laptop connected to AC power while installing firmware. Do not interrupt the process or close the updater while it is writing the controller firmware.

Manual method: Lenovo Support

  1. Open Lenovo Support and identify the laptop using its exact model or serial number.
  2. Choose Drivers & Software.
  3. Select Manual Update.
  4. Look under Display and Video Graphics for the Thunderbolt software/driver package.
  5. Look under Thunderbolt and Firmware for the firmware package.
  6. Install the driver package first, then the firmware package.

Package names, driver versions and minimum NVM firmware versions vary by machine. Do not copy a package from a different ThinkPad model. For example, Lenovo lists P43s requirements of driver package N2ITD03W, version 1.41.729.0, and firmware package N2ITH02W, NVM version 20. Those values are not universal requirements for other models.

Check the BIOS prerequisite

The firmware updater requires Intel Thunderbolt IO Controller to be enabled in BIOS/UEFI. If that controller is disabled, the firmware package may refuse to install even when the correct Lenovo download is being used.

UGREEN USB C Hub 5 in 1 Multiport USB Adapter 4K HDMI, 100W Power Delivery
  • 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports

Restart the ThinkPad and enter BIOS/UEFI using the key shown during startup—commonly F1 on ThinkPad systems. Locate the Thunderbolt or I/O security settings, confirm that the Intel Thunderbolt IO Controller is enabled, save the change, and boot back into Windows. The exact menu names can differ by model and BIOS revision.

Lenovo also notes that systems reporting NVM version 4.0 must have a Thunderbolt device connected before the firmware update. Connect a compatible Thunderbolt device or dock, then run the firmware installer again.

How to check the installed versions

Check the Thunderbolt software version

Open PowerShell and run:

(Get-WmiObject Win32_PnPSignedDriver| where {$_.DeviceName -eq “Thunderbolt(TM) Controller – 15BF”}).driverversion

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 15BF identifier is not universal; Lenovo notes that it differs between systems. If the command returns nothing, open Device Manager, expand the relevant system or Thunderbolt devices, identify the exact controller name, and adjust the command accordingly.

Check the Thunderbolt firmware/NVM version

After installing the firmware package, open PowerShell and change to the directory containing the firmware files. Lenovo’s usual directory is:

cd C:\DRIVERS\Thunderbolt_FW

Then run:

./FwUpdateCmd.exe GetCurrentNvmVersion “$(./FwUpdateCmd.exe EnumControllers)”

Compare the result with the minimum NVM version Lenovo lists for the exact machine type.

Before deciding the USB-C port is dead

Not every USB-C failure is the ThinkPad Thunderbolt issue. USB-C is a connector standard, not a guarantee that every port supports charging, displays, Thunderbolt, or every accessory.

  • What You Get: 2ft Anker USB-C Data Hub (4-in-1, 5Gbps) , welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Check these possibilities:

  • Charging: Use the supplied charger and cable, connect directly to the laptop’s charging-capable USB-C port, and test without a dock or hub. An underpowered or incompatible charger, an unsuitable cable, dust in the port, or a noncharging USB-C port can produce the same symptom.
  • Displays and docks: Verify that the port supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode or Thunderbolt, and that the cable and display support the required feature. Test the display or dock directly on the correct port rather than through another hub.
  • Power: Connect the laptop or accessory to external power and disconnect unused USB devices. A low battery or a USB accessory demanding more power than the laptop can provide can cause intermittent operation.
  • Audio: Some computers support USB-C digital audio but not USB-C analog audio. A digital USB-C audio adapter may work where an analog adapter does not.
  • Alternate Mode: Windows has no switch that enables USB-C Alternate Mode. It is negotiated automatically when the laptop, cable and accessory all support the same mode.

These checks are especially important if only one accessory fails while other USB-C functions continue to work. For more troubleshooting guidance, see Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance.

What if the update fails?

Do not attempt to flash an unofficial firmware image or directly rewrite the controller’s EEPROM as a routine fix. Lenovo’s documented endpoint is to contact Lenovo Technical Support if the symptoms remain after both the software/driver and firmware packages have been installed.

When contacting support, provide the exact ThinkPad machine type, Windows version, installed Thunderbolt driver and NVM versions, the displayed error, and whether the controller appears in Device Manager or BIOS. Also mention whether the failure affects charging, display output, docks, or all USB-C functions.

Is installing the Thunderbolt driver enough?

No. Lenovo requires the Intel Thunderbolt software/driver package first and the Intel Thunderbolt firmware package second.

Will a BIOS update fix the USB-C problem?

Not by itself. Intel Thunderbolt IO Controller must be enabled in BIOS/UEFI so the firmware installer can work, but Lenovo separately requires the Thunderbolt software and firmware packages.

Why does the firmware installer say it cannot update the controller?

Check that Intel Thunderbolt IO Controller is enabled in BIOS/UEFI. If the system reports NVM version 4.0, Lenovo says a Thunderbolt device must also be connected before updating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my USB-C charger work on another laptop but not this one?

The charger may be incompatible or underpowered, the cable may not meet the laptop’s power requirements, or the port may not support charging. Test with the supplied charger and cable, directly connected to the laptop.

The Bottom Line

If an affected ThinkPad has lost USB-C charging, docking, display output or Thunderbolt detection, use Lenovo Vantage’s System Update and install both packages in order: Thunderbolt software/driver, then Thunderbolt firmware. Confirm that Intel Thunderbolt IO Controller is enabled in BIOS, and use the exact packages for the laptop’s machine type. If the update completes but the failure remains, Lenovo recommends contacting Technical Support rather than attempting unofficial firmware repairs.
