LOTRO’s Neighbours system lets you invite an in-game character to your home and grow a relationship through conversations, gifts, neighbourhood missions, and personal story instances. It is a housing-based bond with neighbour characters—not a player-finder or a way to guarantee meeting other players.
How a neighbour becomes part of your home
LOTRO’s August 2, 2026 feature announcement describes a housing-hook item as the invitation mechanism: place the item in your home, and the associated neighbour is invited to visit. The announcement says the Wolves of Mordor pre-order provides introductions to representatives of each of the four primary Free Peoples. Once a neighbour is visiting, the relationship is intended to develop over time. LOTRO names three activities: conversations, gifts, and a new neighbour mission system. The official announcement describes the relationship stages as stranger, companion, and trusted friend. Deeper bonds unlock personal story instances, and the player can learn the neighbour’s likes and dislikes and potentially discover a hidden dream.

The expansion description presents neighbours as characters with distinct personalities and changing moods: LOTRO says the system is shaped by twenty personality traits and a dynamic mood system. Those details suggest that relationships are meant to feel individual rather than like a single generic friendship track. They do not, by themselves, establish which choices suit each character or the fastest way to advance a bond.

LOTRO’s feature announcement captures the premise this way: “Middle-earth is filled with heroes, but every hero deserves a friend next door.” The practical loop it describes is simple: invite a character through a housing item, spend time getting to know them, and build the relationship through the named activities.
What “making friends” means in this feature
Here, friendship means building a bond with an in-game neighbour character who visits or resides in player housing. The official descriptions do not present Neighbours as matchmaking, a fellowship queue, or a system for finding human players in the open world. If you mean “How often can I bump into other players, make friends, and complete Fellowship quests or instances?”, that is a separate question about LOTRO’s player community and group play; the Neighbours feature descriptions do not answer it.

Availability and details to check in-game
As of the official pages reviewed in September 2026, LOTRO’s expansion page listed Wolves of Mordor for October 2026, while the news listing said it was available to pre-purchase on September 30. Those dates make launch status and access conditions time-sensitive. Check the live game and current release notes for whether the expansion has launched and what ownership, edition, or quest prerequisites apply.

A Deeper Dive Into the Neighbours System.” Its listing confirms that a more detailed article exists, but the listing alone does not establish specifics such as mission rewards, refresh timing, or final progression rules. Avoid assuming that any activity is the quickest route to friendship until current in-game guidance confirms it.
