Open Find My on an Apple device signed in to the Apple Account used to pair your AirPods. Tap Devices, select the AirPods, and check the map and available actions. Depending on the model and connection state, you may be able to play a sound, use Find Nearby, get directions, or mark supported AirPods as lost. Find My needed to be enabled before the AirPods went missing; a location on the map is a search clue, not proof of who has them.
How to look for missing AirPods
- Open Find My. On an Apple device signed in to the Apple Account used to pair the AirPods, open the Find My app and tap Devices.
- Select your AirPods. If the earbuds are separated, Find My may let you choose the left or right AirPod.
- Choose an available action. Use Play Sound if the AirPods are nearby. If Find Nearby appears and your model and device support it, follow the on-screen directions. For a mapped location farther away, tap Directions to open it in Maps.
- Check for lost-device controls. Supported models may show Lost Mode or Show Contact Info. Follow the prompts to add contact details.
Find My can also be accessed at iCloud.com/find, though Apple says the web experience may have fewer features. AirPods must have been paired with an iPhone or iPad signed in to the owner’s Apple Account to appear in Find My, and Find My must have been turned on before the loss. What the map and status messages mean
AirPods are nearby and available
When the AirPods are in range and available, Find My may offer Play Sound; supported model and device combinations may also offer Find Nearby. Availability varies by AirPods generation and the device you use. Apple’s Find My feature matrix lists which features are available for different models.

Use the displayed location to guide a search or get directions. It does not establish that the AirPods are still there, who has them, or whether they were stolen.

Find My says Offline or No location found
AirPods that are out of range or need charging may show only a last-known location. While they are unavailable, you may not be able to play a sound or use Find Nearby. If they reconnect, a notification may appear on an Apple device used with them. A last-known location is not live tracking, and Find My does not guarantee continuous updates.
Mark AirPods as lost, if the model supports it
In Find My, select the AirPods and look for Lost Mode or Show Contact Info in the lost-device controls. Follow the prompts to provide contact details. This option requires the Find My network to have been enabled before the AirPods went missing; the available controls depend on the exact model and can vary by country or region.

Apple’s feature matrix lists View Location and Play Sound for models including AirPods 1, AirPods 2, and AirPods 4. More extensive features—including options such as Find Nearby, Show Contact Info, notifications, and Find My Lock—are listed for AirPods 3, AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods Pro models, and AirPods Max. Not every feature applies to every model. Check the current Apple feature matrix rather than assuming all AirPods have the same recovery tools.

When only one earbud or the case is missing
Apple lists separate lost marking for each AirPod and the case on AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3. Confirm both the AirPods generation and case variant before relying on this option. Apple’s guide to finding AirPods describes the supported separate-component controls.

If you think your AirPods were stolen
Do not confront someone or approach a location solely because Find My shows it. The map does not prove who possesses the AirPods, and Apple’s cited guidance does not promise a particular police-report process or guarantee that law enforcement can recover them.
If you believe your safety is at risk, Apple Support’s unwanted-tracking guidance says: “If you feel your safety is at risk, contact your local law enforcement, who can work with Apple to request information related to the item.” This is safety guidance, not a guaranteed recovery route for stolen AirPods. If you found someone else’s AirPods
On an Apple device, open Find My, tap Items, scroll down, and tap Identify Found Item to check separated AirPods or a supported tracking accessory. This flow may provide information, but it does not guarantee that you can identify the owner in every case. If you believe a device is being used to track someone unlawfully, Apple says law enforcement can request information available to Apple through its unwanted-tracking guidance: What to do about an unwanted tracking alert.
