A luggage tracker cannot stop a bag from being misrouted, but it can give you another way to see where it is and may help the airline recover it. That distinction matters: SITA counted 33.4 million mishandled bags worldwide in 2024, or 6.3 per 1,000 passengers, and most were delayed rather than permanently lost.
How often does checked luggage go astray?
SITA’s 2025 Baggage IT Insights report counted 33.4 million mishandled bags in 2024, equivalent to 6.3 mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers. “Mishandled” includes delays and damage as well as bags that are lost or stolen, so the headline figure is not a count of bags permanently lost. SITA’s 2025 report breaks the cases down as 74% delayed, 8% lost or stolen, and 18% damaged or pilfered.
Why bags are mishandled
Transfers were the largest stated contributor in SITA’s breakdown, at 41%. Tagging or ticketing errors and similar factors accounted for 17%, loading failures for 16%, and operational issues such as customs, weather, or capacity constraints for 10%. These are shares of mishandling causes reported by SITA, not the probability that any particular traveler’s bag will encounter one.

A consumer tracker provides a location signal through its compatible phone ecosystem. If a bag is delayed, that signal may help you and the airline narrow down where to look. The tracker does not control baggage handling, prevent a transfer mistake, or guarantee that the bag will be returned. No universal tracker brand or airline process is established by the available evidence.

Airline tracking is separate from your personal tracker
Airlines and their airport and ground-handler partners record baggage custody and routing events. Under IATA Resolution 753 guidance, member airlines track bags at a minimum of four core points. The system relies on coordination among airlines, airports, and handlers; a passenger’s tracker is a separate source of location information.
When an airline can use shared location
SITA describes a specific workflow in which an Apple Find My user can temporarily share an AirTag or compatible Find My network accessory’s location with an airline using WorldTracer. The location becomes visible in the baggage trace record, and the passenger controls the share and can stop it. It is a participating-airline capability, not a feature every carrier supports.

In December 2025, SITA said 29 airlines used this integration. SITA reported that, during its first year, bags with location sharing enabled had 90% fewer cases classified as truly lost and delayed-bag recovery time was 26% shorter. These are vendor-reported results for that particular integration, not an independent controlled comparison or a result that can be assumed for other trackers and airlines. SITA’s December 2025 announcement describes the scope.

How to reduce the risk before you check a bag
No preparation step can guarantee a bag will arrive with you. The practical goal is to avoid preventable confusion and make a delayed bag easier to identify and trace.
- Photograph the bag and its contents. Keep images accessible on your phone in case you need to describe the bag or document a claim.
- Keep the bag tag and itinerary details. The claim tag links you to the checked item; do not discard it until the bag is safely returned.
- Pack essentials in your carry-on. Keep medication, valuables, and items you need immediately with you.
- Consider the connection risk. U.S. DOT says the likelihood of a bag going astray rises across nonstop flights, same-aircraft stops, aircraft changes, and interline connections. When feasible, avoid checking a bag on a tight connection or one involving an airline transfer.
- Check tracker compatibility and airline policy. Confirm that the tracker works with your phone and ask whether your airline accepts shared location data through a supported recovery process.
What to do if your checked bag does not arrive
- Report it to the airline promptly. Use the airline’s baggage desk or its stated reporting channel before leaving the airport if possible.
- Get a case reference and keep records. Save the reference number, bag-tag receipt, itinerary, and any messages from the carrier. If you have a tracker, provide its location only through a process the airline accepts.
- Follow the carrier’s claim instructions. Keep receipts for reasonable essential purchases made because of the delay, and submit them with the requested claim documentation.
- Continue to monitor the case. Use the airline’s status updates and respond to requests for identifying details or delivery information.
U.S. compensation rules for delayed, damaged, or lost bags
For travel covered by U.S. rules, airlines must compensate passengers for baggage that is lost, delayed, or damaged, subject to applicable regulations and international treaties. The U.S. Department of Transportation lists a maximum liability of $4,700 per passenger for domestic travel. For most international travel covered by the Montreal Convention, the listed limit is 1,519 Special Drawing Rights (SDR) per passenger—approximately $2,175 using the conversion shown on the DOT page. These are liability limits, not automatic payments: the outcome can depend on the circumstances, proof of value, depreciation, and applicable deadlines. DOT also says airlines must refund fees paid to transport a bag that is lost. Check the rules for your specific route and follow the carrier’s claim process. The DOT baggage guidance provides the U.S.-focused details.
