Loot boxes sell a chance at a randomized reward; battle passes sell access to a progression-based reward track; and virtual currency can make either purchase harder to price in real money. To compare them, check what you receive, what you must spend, how much play time is required, and whether the offer expires.
How loot boxes, battle passes, and in-game currency differ
Loot boxes trade certainty for a randomized reward
A loot box is a container or reward mechanic whose contents are randomized. You may earn one through play, buy it with real money or virtual currency, or use a mixture of those routes. The key difference from a direct purchase is that you do not know the exact item before opening it. Some publishers disclose reward probabilities, but the format and detail can vary. Check both the odds and the possible reward pool before paying. Battle passes exchange money and play for a reward track
A battle pass usually provides access to a set of rewards unlocked as you progress, often during a season. Games may have free and paid tracks, or reserve premium rewards for players who purchase a pass. The rewards may be listed in advance, but getting them can require sustained play or XP before the pass period ends. The exact price, duration, progression rules, and reward list depend on the game.
For a dated example, Epic’s Fortnite support page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists the Battle Pass at 800 V-Bucks, the LEGO Pass at 1,200 V-Bucks, the OG Pass at 800 V-Bucks, and the Music Pass at 1,200 V-Bucks. These are in-game currency prices, not cash prices, and apply to Fortnite’s listed passes rather than battle passes generally. Epic says its active passes last one season and progress through XP earned by playing Fortnite experiences.

Virtual currency adds a conversion step
Many games let players buy virtual currency with real money and then spend that currency on in-game items. Some games also let players earn currency through play; check the rules of the specific game rather than assuming every currency works the same way. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s 2024 issue spotlight describes gaming marketplaces where consumers buy assets with conventional money and use those assets for in-game purchases.
Virtual currency can conceal the cash cost because you may have to buy a bundle larger than the item price requires. Work out the real-money cost of the bundle or bundles needed, then account for currency left over. Unspent currency is not a discount on the item unless you can use it for something you actually want.

Compare offers by certainty, cost, time, and expiry

Use the game’s current rules for each comparison: these mechanics are not standardized across publishers, platforms, seasons, or regions.

How to calculate what an offer really costs
- Find the offer’s currency price and the local bundles. Use the game’s shop for the player’s region and platform; bundle sizes and prices can change.
- Identify the smallest bundle combination that covers the required amount. Compare the cash paid, not just the displayed currency amount.
- Record the remainder. If a bundle leaves currency unused, include that amount in your comparison rather than treating it as a saving.
- Check whether payment is necessary. Find out whether the item can be earned through play, purchased directly, or only obtained through a randomized reward.
- Include time and expiry. For a pass, assess whether you can realistically progress before the season ends; for rotating offers or limited reward pools, check the deadline.
Do not rely on a universal currency-to-cash conversion chart: there is no single exchange rate across games, regions, or bundles. A 2024 European Commission staff working document reported that, among the cases it examined where in-game currency was available, 61.5% had a lower per-unit price for currency bought in bundles. That is a finding about the document’s reviewed cases, not all games or the current market. The same document reported that 30% of examined cases included loot boxes or similar virtual items, including passes granting access to game levels; information about contents was generally unclear in those cases. What the evidence and rules say about loot boxes
Loot boxes are not automatically classified as gambling everywhere, and the evidence does not establish that buying them causes problem gambling. The UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport says studies found an association between loot-box purchases and problem gambling, but that evidence has not established causation. The UK government has called for spending controls and transparent information, including parental or guardian consent for children and young people to access paid loot boxes. The House of Commons Library’s August 2024 briefing says the Gambling Commission has stated that the Gambling Act 2005 does not cover loot boxes, limiting its ability to act under that law. Policy positions are not the same as a universal publisher guarantee or a binding rule in every jurisdiction. The European Parliament’s 2023 resolution calls for the real-world value of virtual currencies to be clearly and prominently shown for each purchase; treat this as the resolution’s stated position, not as a complete account of binding legal requirements. Xbox separately says every loot box in games from Xbox Game Studios will provide an item with in-game worth or value at least equal to the amount paid. Fortnite illustrates why pass terms need checking
Fortnite’s current support information offers a concrete example of how several details can affect a pass’s value. Epic says active passes progress simultaneously when players earn XP, but each pass requires a separate purchase to access its premium rewards. Fortnite Crew includes active passes while the subscription applies. That can change the comparison between paying for passes separately and subscribing, depending on how many passes and rewards you expect to use. Check the current terms before purchasing. Practical safeguards for players and families
- Set a spending limit before opening the shop. Where available, use the game’s spending controls and platform purchase settings; the UK government recommends player access to controls and clear information.
- For a child account, review purchase and loot-box settings with a parent or guardian. UK government guidance says paid loot boxes should be unavailable to children and young people unless enabled by a parent or guardian; rules and controls differ elsewhere.
- Pause before repeated randomized purchases. A disclosed probability does not make a particular outcome certain. Decide in advance what amount, if any, you are willing to spend.
- Secure the account and payment method. The CFPB’s 2024 spotlight discusses theft, scams, unauthorized transactions, and limited recourse in gaming markets. Those concerns do not apply equally to every game or transaction, but they are reasons to use account security and review purchase alerts.
