“Long Reach Ethernet” can mean Cisco’s older VDSL-based Ethernet-over-telephone-wiring system or, in modern industrial networking, long-reach single-pair Ethernet such as 10BASE-T1L. The distinction matters: 10BASE-T1L is a 10 Mb/s point-to-point PHY designed for links up to 1,000 m under specified cable and installation conditions; Cisco LRE was a separate vendor system with different wiring, equipment and historical performance figures.
What does “Long Reach Ethernet” mean?
It is an ambiguous phrase, not the name of one uniquely defined current Ethernet physical layer. In older Cisco material, Long-Reach Ethernet (LRE) means a Cisco VDSL-based system that extended Ethernet over existing telephone-grade copper. In contemporary industrial networking, “long reach” is also used descriptively for single-pair Ethernet, particularly the standardized 10BASE-T1L PHY.
When a source gives a speed or distance, first identify which meaning it uses. Cisco LRE product figures should not be applied to 10BASE-T1L, or vice versa.

What does 10BASE-T1L’s 1,000 m reach depend on?
The 1,000 m figure is a design reach for a compliant point-to-point link, not a guarantee for any two wires that happen to form a pair. Cisco’s 2023 Converged Plantwide Ethernet (CPwE) guide gives 18 AWG shielded twisted pair as its maximum-distance example and allows up to ten inline connectors. It also explains that smaller conductor gauges increase direct-current resistance and can reduce achievable reach.

- Check the selected cable’s balanced-pair characteristics, conductor gauge and resistance.
- Confirm impedance suitability, shielding and connector type against the link and equipment requirements.
- Account for the number of inline connectors and the installation environment.
- If the link will carry power as well as data, verify that the specific PHY equipment and cable support the intended power delivery.
These conditions are why a cable description alone—or the label “single pair”—cannot establish that a proposed 1 km link will work.
Is Ethernet-APL the same as 10BASE-T1L?
No. 10BASE-T1L specifies a physical layer independently of a particular application. Ethernet-APL builds on the 10BASE-T1L data-layer standard with additional requirements for process-control environments, including EMC performance, shield connections and topology. An APL device complies with the 10BASE-T1L data-layer standard, but a generic 10BASE-T1L device is not necessarily APL-compliant. Analog Devices’ explanation of 10BASE-T1L and Ethernet-APL.

When is each term useful?
Use “Cisco LRE” for the legacy product
If documentation refers to Cisco LRE, VDSL or a Cisco 2900 LRE XL switch, it means the historical vendor system. Cisco’s 2008 FAQ lists the Cisco 2900 LRE XL switch, Cisco 575 LRE customer-premises equipment and a 48-port POTS splitter as system components. Those details describe that product family, not components for a standards-based 10BASE-T1L link.

For an industrial single-pair Ethernet link with a stated 10 Mb/s rate and reach up to 1 km, 10BASE-T1L is the specific term to look for. The IEEE 802.3cg-2019 project covers 10 Mb/s single-pair Ethernet; IEEE distinguishes the point-to-point long-reach T1L form from short-reach T1S. Keep 802.3dg-2026 separate
IEEE reports that Std 802.3dg-2026 was approved at the IEEE SA Standards Board meeting in June 2026. It addresses 100 Mb/s long-reach single-pair Ethernet, so it should not be described as another name for 10BASE-T1L or as a 10 Mb/s PHY. IEEE 802.3dg task-force page.
