Single-turn LLM benchmarks score an answer to an isolated prompt under fixed conditions. Long-horizon agent benchmarks score whether a model working through an agent harness can make a sequence of observations and actions—often with tools and a changing environment—and reach a verifiable end state. They measure related but different capabilities, so a high score in one category does not establish reliable performance in the other.
What is the difference between LLM benchmarks and agent benchmarks?
The central difference is what counts as the unit of work. A single-turn benchmark presents a prompt, accepts a response, and scores that response. A long-horizon benchmark presents a task that may require many tool calls, intermediate decisions, state updates, and corrections before the requested result exists.
Single-turn LLM benchmarks
Single-turn tests are designed to isolate prompt-level capabilities. Depending on the benchmark, the model may be asked to answer factual questions, solve mathematical or logical problems, write or critique text, classify an item, or produce code. The protocol normally fixes the prompt and expected answer format, then uses exact matching, a rubric, a judge model, or another scorer.
These evaluations are useful when your product also has a bounded interaction: for example, answering a known question, extracting a field from a document, or generating a first draft. They can reveal knowledge, reasoning, instruction following, and response accuracy without the confounding effects of a browser, memory system, tool API, or orchestration loop.

Long-horizon agent benchmarks
An agent benchmark evaluates a system while it operates. The system can include the base model plus a prompt, planner, memory, tool definitions, browser or desktop interface, retry policy, and other harness components. The benchmark supplies an environment and a goal; the agent must choose actions, observe results, preserve relevant state, and eventually satisfy a success condition.
A task can fail even when individual answers sound plausible. The agent might select the wrong tool, lose information between steps, misunderstand a changing page, stop before completing the final action, or make an irreversible change that prevents recovery. Consequently, task-completion benchmarks expose operational reliability that an isolated response score cannot measure.
Why a high benchmark score does not guarantee task completion
A benchmark result describes performance on a particular task set, protocol, scorer, and system configuration. It is not a universal measure of intelligence. A model can know how to explain a software change yet fail to apply it, or answer each subquestion correctly while never delivering the required final artifact.
- Different capabilities are exercised. Single-turn tests emphasize producing a correct response from the information in the prompt. Agent tasks add planning, tool selection, state tracking, error recovery, and stopping at the right time.
- Errors accumulate across steps. If a task requires several dependent actions, one early mistake can invalidate later work. Per-step competence therefore does not translate directly into end-to-end success.
- The evaluated system may not be the base model. A score can reflect the harness, tool wrappers, system prompt, memory, model version, sampling settings, and retry logic. Changing any of these can change the result without changing the underlying model.
- Scorers see only defined success. Exact-answer checking, execution checks, environment state, rubrics, and judge models each detect some failures and miss others. Passing a particular scorer does not prove generalization to a new workflow.
- Task distributions differ. A benchmark built from short factual questions cannot establish performance on a long software or web workflow. Conversely, success in a narrow simulated environment does not establish broad reasoning ability.
The practical rule is to treat a score as evidence about the tested configuration and task distribution, not as a transferable ranking of general intelligence.
How long-horizon performance is measured
One useful way to express an agent’s capability is a time horizon based on human task duration. METR defines it as follows:
“The task-completion time horizon is the task duration (measured by human expert completion time) at which an AI agent is predicted to succeed with a given level of reliability.”

METR’s time-horizons page describes tasks drawn from RE-Bench, HCAST, and shorter novel software tasks. Its displayed analysis covers models from 2019 through November 2025 (the page was accessed October 13, 2026). A horizon is a task-distribution-dependent estimate: it depends on the selected tasks, reliability threshold, agent setup, and estimation method. It is not a promise that an agent will complete every task taking that long.
When reporting a horizon, include the reliability level and the task family. “The agent has a two-hour horizon” is incomplete without those conditions.
Which benchmarks test tool use and task completion?
Several well-known evaluations illustrate the range between question answering and full environment interaction. The counts below describe the versions and descriptions in the cited 2024 sources; benchmark releases can change, so check the current release when making a present-day claim.
| Benchmark | What the cited source reports | What it helps evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| GAIA | 465 multimodal real-world question-answer pairs requiring multiple steps and tools, as described in Microsoft Research’s 2024 Magentic-One report (PDF). | Research, multimodal interpretation, tool choice, and multi-step execution. Its question-and-answer format shows that “question benchmark” and “agent benchmark” are not always strict opposites. |
| AssistantBench | 214 realistic, time-consuming question-answer tasks that are automatically verifiable, according to the same report (PDF). | Longer assistant-style work with an objective check on the resulting answer. |
| WebArena | 812 tasks across website categories such as shopping, forums, and maps, including tasks that require multiple websites, as described in the report (PDF). A NeurIPS 2024 comparison table characterizes it as an executable environment with GUI support (paper PDF). | Browser navigation, cross-site state, interface grounding, and completion of a specified web state. |
| WorkArena | The ICML 2024 paper introduces a remote-hosted benchmark of 33 tasks based on the widely used ServiceNow platform (PMLR paper). | Knowledge-work workflows performed through enterprise software rather than a text-only response. |
Task counts indicate the size of the cited set, not its difficulty, coverage, or ecological validity. A smaller benchmark can contain harder or more varied tasks than a larger one.
How to evaluate an AI agent on multi-step tasks
Build the evaluation around the work you actually need automated. The following procedure keeps model quality separate from harness and environment effects.
- Define the end state. Write a testable statement of what must be true when the task ends: a record has the correct fields, a file executes successfully, a web order is staged but not submitted, or a report contains specified evidence. Include safety boundaries for actions the agent must not take.
- Assemble representative tasks. Sample the domain, data formats, permissions, ambiguity, and exception cases of the intended deployment. Record an expert completion time for each task if you plan to report a time horizon. Do not infer difficulty from token count or number of prompts alone.
- Specify the environment and tools. Pin the software version, websites or APIs, credentials, available tools, browser state, network access, and starting data. Decide whether external information is static, simulated, remote-hosted, or changing during the run.
- Freeze the agent configuration. Record the model and access method, system and task prompts, memory, planner, tool schemas, context limits, temperature or other sampling settings, retry limits, and stopping rules. The score belongs to this complete configuration.
- Instrument every action. Capture observations, tool calls, arguments, returned data, timing, errors, retries, and intermediate state. Logs let you distinguish a planning error from a tool failure or an environment outage.
- Choose a verification method before running. Prefer deterministic checks where possible: inspect database or file state, execute tests, validate a structured output, or compare a controlled environment snapshot. Use a rubric or judge for qualities that cannot be checked mechanically, and document its criteria and known blind spots.
- Repeat trials. Run enough independent trials to reveal variance from sampling, timing, and environment changes. Report success rate, not only the best run. State how retries count: a retry may be a legitimate recovery action or may conceal an unacceptable first-attempt failure.
- Report failure modes, not just a percentage. Categorize wrong tool selection, lost state, hallucinated observations, permission errors, unsafe actions, timeouts, incomplete finalization, and scorer disagreements. These categories tell you what to fix and whether the system is suitable for the workflow.
A framework for comparing benchmark results
Before comparing two numbers, align the following dimensions. If they differ, describe the result as a comparison of evaluated systems under their reported conditions rather than a clean model-only ranking.

| Axis | Questions to ask | Why it changes interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Task type | Is the system answering a fixed prompt or completing a task in an environment? | Response accuracy and end-state completion are different outcomes. |
| Domain | Does the set match the intended work: web research, software changes, desktop use, or service workflows? | Skills and failure modes are domain-specific. |
| Horizon | How many interactions or how much human task time does each item involve? Is duration measured or only implied by design? | Longer dependency chains create more opportunities for compounding errors. |
| Tools and interface | Are APIs, a browser, a graphical interface, or no tools available? Are they identical across systems? | Tool access can dominate results independently of model reasoning. |
| Environment | Is it static, simulated, remote-hosted, or connected to changing external information? | Reproducibility and real-world validity trade off against each other. |
| Verification | Is success checked by exact answers, execution, environment state, a rubric, or a judge? What can the scorer miss? | A high score is meaningful only relative to what was actually checked. |
| System under test | Is the score for the base model or for a model combined with a particular prompt, memory, tools, and agent loop? | Harness improvements or regressions may be mistaken for model changes. |
| Reliability | Was it one run, repeated runs, or a reliability statistic? How are variance and retries handled? | One successful demonstration is not an estimate of dependable operation. |
How to read scores without making false comparisons
Align benchmark versions and dates
Datasets, websites, software environments, prompts, and scoring scripts evolve. Record the exact release or commit, evaluation date, and any filtering. The 465, 214, 812, and 33 figures above are tied to the cited 2024 descriptions, not a timeless inventory.
Separate model effects from harness effects
If two systems use different memory, planning, tools, or retry policies, the result answers “which complete system worked better under these conditions?” It does not isolate the base models. An apples-to-apples model comparison requires the same task set, environment, tool permissions, prompting policy, number of trials, and scorer.
Report distributions and uncertainty
For repeated agent runs, publish the number of trials, success rate, confidence interval or other uncertainty summary, and the treatment of timeouts and partial completion. Include per-task results when the set is small enough to inspect. A mean can hide a system that is excellent on easy tasks and consistently fails one critical workflow.

Exact-match accuracy, judge scores, execution success, completion time, and reliability horizon answer different questions. Keep them as separate columns or paragraphs. A system can improve answer quality while becoming slower, or complete more tasks by taking unsafe actions; a single composite score can conceal that trade-off.
Choosing the right evaluation for a deployment
Use single-turn tests when the product stops at a response
Choose fixed-prompt evaluation for bounded activities such as classification, extraction, summarization, or an answer that a person will verify before acting. Add adversarial and out-of-distribution prompts if errors in knowledge or instruction following are costly.
Use agent tests when the product must change the world
If the system must browse, edit code, operate a desktop, update records, or coordinate several tools, test the complete loop in an environment close to production. Measure both the final state and operational constraints such as permissions, latency, cost, reversibility, and prohibited actions.

Use both for layered assurance
A practical evaluation suite often has three layers:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Component layer: single-turn tests for knowledge, reasoning, extraction, and tool-argument formatting.
- Workflow layer: multi-step tasks in a controlled environment with deterministic end-state checks.
- Production-like layer: replayed or shadowed workflows that include realistic data variation, access controls, interruptions, and changing external information.
Passing the component layer does not waive workflow testing; workflow success does not prove broad reasoning outside the tested domain.

Calling every question benchmark “single-turn”
Some benchmarks present a final answer as the output while requiring browsing, code execution, or several intermediate actions. GAIA and AssistantBench demonstrate this hybrid form. Inspect the allowed interaction protocol rather than classifying a benchmark from its title or answer format.
Using task count as a difficulty score
Counts do not reveal task length, ambiguity, coverage, or verification quality. Read sample tasks and the scoring specification, then report those properties alongside the count.
Comparing a tool-enabled agent with a bare model
Tool access, context retrieval, memory, and retries can materially change outcomes. Either hold them constant or label the comparison as system-level, with the full configuration documented.
Trusting a judge without auditing it
Judge-based scoring can reward plausible language when the requested state was not achieved. Pair it with execution or state checks where possible, calibrate the judge on known successes and failures, and publish disagreement cases.

Reporting one impressive trajectory
A video or transcript shows possibility, not reliability. Repeat tasks with controlled sampling and report failures, timeouts, and recovery behavior.
Ignoring environment drift
Web content, APIs, permissions, and software versions can change. Pin or snapshot the environment for reproducible research, and run a separate production-like test to measure performance under change.
What a useful benchmark report should contain
- The benchmark name, version, task domains, item count, and selection criteria.
- The model identifier, access date, context and sampling settings, and system prompt.
- The agent harness, memory, tools, browser or GUI, permissions, retries, and stopping policy.
- The environment type and software or data versions, including whether external information could change.
- The success definition, scorer implementation, judge rubric, and known blind spots.
- The number of trials, reliability calculation, treatment of partial credit and timeouts, and uncertainty.
- Per-task or failure-category results sufficient to show where the system breaks.
This level of detail lets readers reproduce the test and prevents a benchmark number from being detached from the conditions that produced it.

Use single-turn benchmarks to answer, “Can the model produce a good response to this kind of prompt?” Use long-horizon agent benchmarks to answer, “Can this configured system reliably use its tools and environment to achieve this kind of outcome?” Select complementary tests that mirror the intended deployment, and never infer end-to-end reliability from an isolated-question score—or general reasoning ability from a narrow task-completion score.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a question-answer benchmark still test agent behavior?
Yes. A benchmark may require browsing, code execution, or several tool calls while scoring a final answer. Inspect its interaction protocol and verification method instead of relying on the question-and-answer label.
Is a METR time horizon the maximum task length an agent can handle?
No. It is an estimate of the task duration, measured by human expert completion time, at which the agent is predicted to succeed at a stated reliability level for a particular task distribution and setup.
What is the minimum evidence needed to claim an agent is reliable?
Use representative multi-step tasks, a defined end state, repeat trials, deterministic checks where possible, and a report of success rates, uncertainty, retries, timeouts, and failure categories. A single successful run is insufficient.
