A long-distance network connects communications across separate local networks or service areas. In technical writing, the phrase often overlaps with long-haul network and wide area network (WAN), but it has no universal distance cutoff. Regulators may also use “long-distance” as a defined category of service within a particular country.
What a long-distance network does
At its simplest, a long-distance network carries communications between geographically separated local networks, sites, or service areas. It may carry telephone traffic, data, or other bearer traffic, depending on the context.

In a traditional telephone-network hierarchy, local networks connect through exchanges and national long-haul networks. The International Telecommunication Union’s 2002 handbook on telephone network planning describes local networks linked by national long-haul networks through regional, main, and tertiary exchanges. That is a useful architectural description, not a universal blueprint: some countries do not distinguish local and long-distance levels, and traffic may route differently from the hierarchy implied by telephone numbering.
Is a long-distance network the same as a WAN?
Not exactly, though the terms often overlap. A WAN is a broad technical category for connecting geographically separated networks or sites. “Long-haul” emphasizes carrying communications over broad distances, while “long-distance network” can also refer to a carrier service or regulatory category.

| Term | Typical emphasis | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| WAN | Connecting separate sites or networks over a broad area | A general technical description; the distance and implementation vary. |
| Long-haul network | Core or backbone connectivity across large distances | Often used for infrastructure linking metropolitan areas or regions. |
| Long-distance network or service | Communications between designated local networks or service areas | May be a descriptive phrase or a jurisdiction-specific service category. |
NIST’s 2009 paper on network architectures describes a WAN as sometimes called a core or long-haul network, linking metropolitan areas and potentially crossing national boundaries. Crossing a border is possible, not a requirement for every long-distance network.
How far does a long-distance network reach?
There is no single distance threshold that defines the term everywhere. NIST’s 2009 paper gives approximate scale examples: a LAN is “usually less than 5 km,” a MAN “usually covers a city area (~50 km),” and a WAN covers “several hundreds km, or even longer.” These are broad category descriptions from that paper, not universal technical or legal boundaries.

Regulators can define long-distance networks by the areas they connect or the service they provide, rather than by a universal physical distance.

India
India’s Department of Telecommunications uses “NLD” for national long-distance. Its glossary describes NLD network and service in terms that include carrying traffic between telecom-circle or metro service areas, domestic bandwidth, and leased circuits within the national service area. The glossary also describes NLD service as connecting different short-distance charging areas. These are Indian regulatory terms, not a worldwide definition.
Taiwan
Taiwan’s National Communications Commission defines long-distance network business as fixed service across different local operating areas within the country, and distinguishes it from international network business. The NCC regulation page reflects an amendment from 2017; check the current legal text before relying on it for compliance or licensing decisions.

The contrast matters: one regulator’s service-area definition should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. For legal, licensing, or billing questions, use the exact term and jurisdiction in the relevant regulator’s rules.
Does the network hierarchy determine the route?
No. A diagram of local, regional, and national network levels describes an architecture, but it does not necessarily show the route a particular call or data flow takes. As the ITU handbook notes, traffic routing can take a path different from the hierarchy suggested by numbering, including a shorter path. The route depends on the network and its routing arrangements.

What the term means in a technical discussion
- Use WAN when the point is connecting geographically separated sites or local networks.
- Use long-haul network when discussing broad-area core or backbone infrastructure.
- Use long-distance service or a regulator’s exact term when describing a carrier or legal category.
- State the country and relevant service areas when a regulatory definition matters.
