Lone star tick bites can trigger alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), a potentially life-threatening allergy that may cause delayed reactions to red meat and other products from mammals. CDC says more than 110,000 suspected U.S. cases were identified from 2010 through 2022 and estimates that as many as 450,000 people may be affected. The true total is unknown; these figures do not mean that millions of Americans have diagnosed AGS.
What is alpha-gal syndrome?
Alpha-gal syndrome is an allergy to galactose-α-1,3-galactose, commonly called alpha-gal. This sugar molecule is naturally present in most mammals but not in people. In the United States, AGS is most often associated with bites from the lone star tick. A bite can sensitize someone to alpha-gal, but not everyone bitten develops the allergy.
CDC has also reported a few U.S. cases associated with blacklegged and western blacklegged ticks. Other tick species have been linked to AGS in other countries, so the lone star tick is the main U.S. association, not the only possible one.

| Figure | What it measures | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| More than 110,000 suspected cases identified in the United States from 2010 through 2022 | CDC’s summary of suspected cases. AGS is not nationally notifiable, and CDC says the true national total is unknown. | It is not a count of confirmed diagnoses or a complete national census. |
| As many as 450,000 people may be affected | CDC’s estimate of the possible number of people affected. | It is an estimate, not a confirmed case count. |
| 90,018 positive test results among 295,400 people tested from 2017 through 2022 | A CDC analysis of laboratory testing and suspected cases. | It is not a population prevalence estimate or a count of clinically confirmed AGS. |
| Estimated 24.0% alpha-gal IgE seroprevalence in five states | A 2026 CDC estimate based on 3,000 residual blood-donor samples collected in 2024–2025 across 10 states; the five high-seroprevalence states were Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, and Virginia. | Antibodies alone do not show that a person has the clinical syndrome. CDC cautions that only a small minority of people with IgE seropositivity have AGS. |
Those distinctions matter: having alpha-gal antibodies is not the same as having allergy symptoms and a clinical diagnosis. The 2026 antibody estimate cannot be used to claim that millions of people have AGS.
CDC’s analysis of testing from 2017–2022 found suspected cases predominantly in counties across the South, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic, especially where lone star ticks are established. Cases were also found outside the tick’s known range. Tick distribution and reported cases do not form a fixed boundary, and geography alone cannot confirm or rule out AGS.

Why can a meat allergy be hard to recognize?
Unlike many food reactions that begin soon after eating, AGS symptoms commonly appear two to six hours after exposure, according to a 2023 CDC release. That delay can make it difficult to connect a meal with symptoms later in the evening or overnight. Reactions vary in type and severity, and a person may not react to every item containing alpha-gal or react identically each time.

Can a tick bite make you allergic to meat?
It can: a tick bite may sensitize a person to alpha-gal and lead to AGS, but a bite does not guarantee the syndrome. A compatible history can include a tick bite or outdoor exposure followed by delayed symptoms after eating mammalian meat or another possible alpha-gal source. CDC describes the lone star tick as the tick most often associated with AGS in the United States.
What foods and products can trigger a reaction?
Potential sources include mammalian meats such as beef, pork, lamb, venison, and rabbit. CDC also lists dairy products, gelatin made from beef or pork, mammal fats such as lard or tallow, broths, and some medicines or vaccines as possible sources. Many people with AGS tolerate dairy, and not everyone reacts to every product containing alpha-gal.

Poultry, fish and seafood, eggs, fruits, and vegetables do not contain alpha-gal according to CDC’s food list. Because individual reactions and product ingredients differ, discuss food exclusions and decisions about medicines or vaccines with a healthcare provider rather than assuming every item in a category is unsafe.

How is alpha-gal syndrome diagnosed?
Diagnosis uses the whole clinical picture: a detailed patient history, physical examination, and a blood test for alpha-gal-specific IgE. A clinician may also use skin testing. Symptoms, their delayed timing, and a person’s tick-bite or outdoor-exposure history help determine what a test result means.

A positive alpha-gal IgE result by itself does not establish AGS, particularly in places where lone star ticks are common. The CDC case definition is designed for public-health surveillance; it does not replace a clinician’s evaluation.
How can you reduce the risk of tick bites?
CDC says preventing tick bites is the best way to protect against developing AGS. Its general tick-prevention recommendations reduce exposure risk; they are not a treatment or cure for an established allergy.
- Use an EPA-registered repellent containing an active ingredient such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone. Follow the product label. CDC says products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol should not be used on children under 3.
- Treat clothing and gear with 0.5% permethrin, or use clothing and gear treated with permethrin. Follow the product label; this is for clothing and gear, not skin.
- Avoid brushy or wooded areas with high grass and leaf litter when possible.
- After time outdoors, check your body, clothing, gear, and pets for ticks.
What should someone with diagnosed AGS do?
CDC describes management as avoiding foods and products that contain alpha-gal, preventing future tick bites, and seeking urgent care for severe reactions. The specific foods, products, medicines, or vaccines a person needs to avoid should be discussed with a healthcare provider. There is no vaccine to prevent AGS.
Are new treatments on the way?
In 2026, NIH reported laboratory findings involving rare antibodies that blocked patient IgE from binding to certain allergens or interfered with basophil activation. NIH described the work as a first step toward possible interventions. These experimental results do not mean that an AGS therapy is approved or currently available to patients.
Why are cases easy to miss?
Delayed symptoms complicate recognition, and clinician familiarity may also be a factor. In a CDC survey of 1,500 clinicians in 2023, nearly half had not heard of AGS, about one-third were not confident in diagnosing or managing it, and 5% felt very confident. That survey describes the clinicians surveyed; it is not a measure of the number of people with AGS.
