Logan Thompson stopped 31 of 33 shots as the Washington Capitals opened their 2026-27 season with a 5-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on October 2, 2026. His biggest test came during six consecutive Carolina power plays, when he made 14 saves on 15 shots over 22 minutes and 39 seconds of playing time.
How Thompson and the Capitals opened the season
Washington beat Carolina 5-2 on October 2, 2026, in the Capitals’ season opener. Thompson finished with 31 saves on 33 shots, according to the NHL game recap.
Alex Tuch scored twice in his Capitals debut. Cole Hutson, Jakob Chychrun and Ryan Leonard also scored for Washington. Sebastian Aho and Logan Stankoven had Carolina’s goals.
Why Thompson’s penalty-kill stretch stood out
Washington took six penalties in a row, forcing Thompson and the penalty-kill unit to withstand sustained pressure. During a span of 22 minutes and 39 seconds of playing time, Thompson stopped 14 of 15 shots. Aho scored Carolina’s lone goal during that run on the power play; Leonard restored Washington’s four-goal lead eight seconds later, according to the Capitals’ official recap.

Thompson credited the penalty killers and their shot blocking after the game: “I wasn’t seeing much. I was trying to catch some air, but credit to the PK. We were keeping afloat, we were grinding, and that PK unit was huge tonight. I thought the guys did an amazing job. It’s not easy killing that many penalties in a row, but the guys are blocking shots.”
What Tuch said about Thompson
Tuch praised Thompson’s positioning and composure in the team’s postgame recap: “I thought he was steady, I thought he was reading the play really well. He was always in position. He just gives us a lot of confidence.” That is Tuch’s assessment of the performance, rather than a separate statistical measure.

Thompson’s recent season context
The Capitals’ September 28, 2026 opening-roster announcement reported that Thompson had been named to the NHL’s Second All-Star Team after the 2025-26 season. In 58 games that season, he recorded a 31-21-6 record, a 2.44 goals-against average, a .912 save percentage and four shutouts. The same announcement cited 29.3 goals saved above expected for that season, attributing the figure to MoneyPuck.com; it is not a statistic for the Carolina game.

What the opener does—and does not—show
Thompson’s 31 saves and his work through Carolina’s six straight power plays explain why his opener was notable. The game reports do not provide a game-specific goals-saved-above-expected figure, and one strong game is not a season forecast.
