If your Android phone is switched off, Find Hub usually cannot show where it is right now. What it can sometimes show is the phone’s last known location. On a limited set of supported models, Google says the Find Hub network can keep locating the phone for several hours after shutdown, but only if specific settings were already on before the phone was turned off. Start with the official lookup below, then secure your Google Account and phone number while you wait for a result.

What Find Hub can and cannot show for a powered-off phone

Find Hub is Google’s service for locating, securing, and erasing a lost Android device. Google has renamed Find My Device to Find Hub, so older guides and some screens may still use the former name. The important point is that a phone’s location is only available in a few specific situations, and each one depends on what the phone was doing and how it was configured before it went quiet.

Phone state Can Find Hub send a live location? What you may see Conditions Google describes
Powered on but offline (no network connection) No live fix from the phone itself A last known location, which may come from encrypted recent-location data or from nearby devices in the Find Hub network, depending on earlier settings Depends on settings enabled before the phone lost its connection
Fully powered off, supported model (Pixel 8, Pixel 9, and Pixel 10 series per current Pixel help) Possibly, for several hours after shutdown A location from the Find Hub network Bluetooth and Location were on when the phone shut down, and offline finding was set to a supported network mode
Fully powered off, any other phone or settings Not stated by Google for this case Only a last known location, if one was recorded Not stated (Google Android Help, “Be ready to find a lost Android device”)

Treat any location you see as the last point the phone reported, not proof of where it is today. A powered-off phone is a narrow case, and you should not assume that a phone you own will qualify simply because it is a recent Android model.

Step-by-step: run the official lookup first

  1. On another phone, a tablet, or a computer, open android.com/find, or open the Find Hub app on an Android device.
  2. Sign in with the Google Account that is set up on the missing phone. A different account will not show the device.
  3. Select the missing phone from the device list.
  4. Read the result. If a current location appears, note the time it was reported and the radius shown on the map. If no current location is available, look for a last known location instead.
  5. If Find Hub offers to notify the device when you select it, use that option. Google describes this as part of locating a lost device, but it will only be heard or seen if the phone is powered on.

How to read a location estimate

Google Android Help says a device’s location is estimated from GPS, nearby Wi-Fi networks, or cell towers. The accuracy depends on which of these sources was used, and the figures below come from Google’s explanation of its own service, not from a guarantee about your phone.

#1 Best Overall
Samsung Galaxy A16 4G LTE (128GB + 4GB) International Model SM-A165F/DS Factory Unlocked, 6.7", Dual SIM, 50MP Triple Camera (Case Bundle), Black
  • Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
  • Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
  • Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
Location source Accuracy Google describes What limits it
GPS Up to around 20 meters in favorable conditions Can be inaccurate indoors or underground
Cell towers A few thousand meters Gives only a broad area, not a building or a street

The radius drawn on the map indicates confidence. A small circle means the estimate is tighter; a large one means the phone could be anywhere inside it. A location reported in a building may be the building’s general area rather than the exact room.

Mark as lost or erase: choose carefully

Find Hub offers two actions that change what the phone does. They have very different effects, and only one of them is reversible.

Action What it does Effect on recovery When it fits
Mark as lost Locks the phone and can show a return message and contact information The phone stays in Find Hub, so you can keep checking its location When you still hope to recover the phone
Erase device Permanently deletes data on the phone. Google says it may not erase SD cards The phone is removed from Find Hub, so location lookup ends. Google says the account password is needed to use the device again Only when you accept that recovery is no longer possible and need to protect your data

Use Mark as lost first. Erasing is a last resort, not a locating step, because it removes the phone from Find Hub permanently.

  • Sign out of the lost phone. Google Account Help describes signing out a lost or stolen device from your Google Account and recommends changing the account password. The steps are explained at Lock or erase your lost phone or computer.
  • Contact your carrier. Depending on the carrier and country, it may be able to suspend the SIM, issue a replacement, or transfer your number to a new device.
  • Ask about the IMEI. Google says a provider may use the phone’s IMEI to disable the device. This blocks use of the phone; it is not a way to see where the phone is.
  • Prepare your two-step verification recovery. If the missing phone received your verification codes, you may need a backup code, another signed-in device, an alternate phone number, a security key, a passkey, or account recovery. Google’s guidance is at Fix common issues with 2-Step Verification.

If the phone still cannot be found

Most failed searches come down to one of the conditions below. Check which one applies before you assume the phone is simply unreachable.

  • Find Hub was never set up on the phone. Without earlier configuration, there is no location to show once the phone is off.
  • Offline finding was off or not set to a supported network mode before shutdown. Powered-off location cannot be enabled after the phone has gone dark.
  • Bluetooth or Location was off when the phone shut down. For supported Pixel models, Google specifies that both were on at shutdown.
  • The model is not on Google’s supported list. Google’s help page for Pixel names the Pixel 8, 9, and 10 series. Google’s help pages reviewed for this guide do not show a publication date, so check the current page for your exact model before relying on it.
  • The phone has no usable stored or network location. In that case, Find Hub has nothing to display.

Menus and features vary by model, Android version, settings, and country. If you tell the manufacturer or carrier the exact make, model, Android version, and country, they can point you to their current instructions. If the phone was stolen, report it to your local police and give them the IMEI from the phone’s box, your purchase record, or your carrier account.

Safety comes first

Do not go alone to a location where the phone was last reported, and do not confront anyone who may have it. Report the loss or theft to local authorities and let them decide how to proceed. Share the location estimate and its time with them rather than acting on it yourself.
