Check the country and storefront for the account you actually use before choosing a payment method. A local option such as PIX, boleto or OXXO can work when a specific store or gift-card seller supports it; a credit card is a practical route when the checkout accepts it and the card matches the account’s store country. Neither option is universally available or reliably cheaper across Latin America.
What the payment options mean in practice
“Local payment method” does not necessarily mean you can select that method at a game store’s checkout. It may instead let you buy a platform gift card, then redeem its code to add funds to your account. That distinction matters: the payment seller, the code’s region and the platform account all need to fit together.

Local methods: PIX, boleto and OXXO
Nintendo Support documents a specific gift-card route: players in Brazil can buy a digital eShop gift card using boleto bancário or PIX, and players in Mexico can use OXXO. Nintendo says the card code is sent to the email associated with the Nintendo Account. These are country-specific ways to buy an eShop gift card, not evidence that PIX, boleto or OXXO appears as a direct payment option for every Nintendo purchase or every game store.

For a PIX checkout that does support it, Mercado Pago’s Brazilian consumer guide, dated August 11, 2026, describes selecting PIX, scanning a QR code or copying a generated code, then paying in a financial institution’s app. It says confirmation usually takes minutes. This describes the payment flow, not acceptance by any particular game merchant.

Credit and debit cards
A card can be the simpler option when the exact store accepts it and the issuer approves the transaction. Acceptance is not the same across countries or storefronts. For example, PlayStation’s Mexico support page lists credit or debit cards and PayPal; that list should not be treated as the payment menu for PlayStation Stores elsewhere in Latin America.

The cited sources do not provide a consistent comparison of fees, refund handling, payment failure rates, or recurring-subscription support across countries and stores. Check those terms with the merchant, platform and payment provider before choosing; do not assume a local method costs less or is easier to reverse than a card charge.

What to check before confirming a purchase
- Confirm the country and storefront. Check the country associated with the account and the store where you are buying. The available payment menu and gift-card compatibility can depend on both.
- Compare the full amount. Review the displayed currency, any conversion your bank or payment provider applies, and any provider or bank fee shown before authorization. Compare the final total, not just the listed game price.
- Check how payment is completed. A PIX flow may require paying a generated QR code or code in a financial institution’s app; the merchant’s stated confirmation time is what matters. Do not assume a payment is complete just because you generated a code.
- Decide whether wallet funding fits. Gift cards and wallet codes can help when a direct checkout method is unavailable, but confirm the code’s region and the platform account it can fund before buying. Wallet funding may not be interchangeable with paying directly at checkout.
- Review refunds and repeat payments separately. Before using a method for a subscription or a purchase you might return, check the platform’s and provider’s terms for that specific payment. The examples here do not establish a region-wide refund or recurring-payment rule.
If your card is declined
First check whether the store’s payment method matches the current country of your account. Steam’s purchasing-issues guidance recommends trying a method that matches the current store country and identifies a Steam Wallet code as an option when none of the available checkout methods work. Do not change an account’s country to obtain a different payment method or price; use the platform’s published country and payment rules.
If the platform offers no usable direct method, look for an officially supported wallet code or gift card for that platform and country. For example, Nintendo’s documented Brazil and Mexico routes let buyers use local methods to purchase eShop gift cards; they are not a general workaround for an incompatible account or an unsupported seller.

How much do local methods matter?
A PagSeguro-hosted gaming payments report attributes figures of 58% of Brazilian gaming sales by credit card and 27% by PIX to a PagSeguro white paper released in July 2023. Those are report-specific figures for Brazil, not a current regional census or a guarantee about the payment mix at a particular store. The same report says some gaming merchants may have limited local-payment options because they are overseas and lack the means to process payments locally; that is the report’s explanation, not a rule for every merchant.
