Southampton’s average private rent was £1,257 a month in August 2026, while its provisional average house price was £236,000 in July 2026. Those citywide figures are useful starting points, not a quote for a particular home. For newcomers, the practical next step is to compare like-for-like properties and test the journey from each shortlisted address; the available evidence does not support an objective ranking of the city’s neighbourhoods.
What does it cost to live in Southampton?

Test the trip from the exact address
A citywide transport description cannot establish whether a home will work for your routine. For each shortlisted property, check the door-to-door journey to work, campus or other regular destinations at the times you would travel. Compare available bus and rail connections with walking and cycling routes, and verify timetables and fares close to your move.
How should newcomers choose an area?
There is no evidence-backed ranking here of Southampton neighbourhoods by safety, value, quality or newcomer satisfaction. A recent local discussion asked, “Any areas to avoid or best areas to look at?” and mentioned Highfield, Portswood, Banister Park and Bassett in anecdotal replies. Such comments can suggest places to investigate, but they do not establish how an area performs or whether it suits you. r/Southampton newcomer discussion.
