Lithium-ion batteries power many phones, laptops, e-bikes, e-scooters, power tools and other rechargeable devices. Their safe handling depends on the device and its manufacturer’s instructions, but a few rules apply broadly: charge carefully, stop using a battery that shows warning signs, and leave immediately if it catches fire. This guide focuses on lithium-ion battery fire safety; not every rechargeable device uses the same chemistry or has identical handling requirements.

How to reduce the risk of a battery fire

Use the charger supplied with the device or one the manufacturer explicitly approves, and follow the device’s charging and storage instructions. Keep batteries away from direct sunlight, hot cars and other heat sources. Don’t charge a device on a bed or couch, or under a pillow, where heat can build up and nearby material can catch fire.

  • Charge on a stable, clear surface, away from combustible materials.
  • Don’t charge a large device where it could block an exit.
  • Keep the battery within the manufacturer’s stated temperature limits. NFPA’s 2025 consumer safety sheet gives 32°F (0°C) to 105°F (40°C) as a charging range, but the device maker’s instructions govern your particular battery: NFPA, “Lithium-Ion Battery Safety”.

These precautions apply across many devices, but the approved charger, temperature limits and other requirements can differ. Check the manufacturer’s guidance for the specific device and battery.

Warning signs: when to stop using a battery

Stop using a battery if it develops an unusual odor, changes color or shape, leaks, becomes excessively hot or makes odd noises. These are warning signs, not problems to troubleshoot by continuing to charge or use the device. The U.S. Fire Administration’s battery safety guidance and NFPA both advise discontinuing use when these symptoms appear.

FLASLD Fireproof Lithium Battery Cover 47×47 inch, Fastest & Simplest Way to Isolate and Extinguish Small Fires, Fire Blanket for E-Scooter and E-Bike Grey
  • Risk reduction: Fireproof doesn't mean it can be endlessly exposed to fire and resist spontaneous battery combustion, we designed this product originally to reduce the risk of fire and stop the spread of fire, it is recommended that our products are stored in an open area with no flammable materials around to ensure maximum safety.
  • Fire prevention: Coated special fabric | For covering or wrapping batteries or battery-powered devices | Retains heat, flames and smoke | Caution in case of fire - gases are toxic.
  • Protection: The fireproof cover delays the spread of heat and fire in the event of a fire | It immediately reduces smoke development | Battery fires are limited and conventional fires are smothered by oxygen deprivation.
  • Compact and light: The fireproof blanket is easy to handle and can be stored easily. This makes it ideal for use at home, in the office or when travelling to enable a quick response to potential fire hazards.
  • Do you know the potential dangers of lipo batteries? Once the battery is shorted, it will instantly generate high temperature and spontaneously ignite, which brings danger to you and your family. We designed this cover to minimize that risk, even though it can't withstand the heat and flames naturally generated by batteries for long time. But it will at least give you time to react to a spontaneous battery combustion.

If a device shows a warning sign but is not on fire, stop using it. USFA says to move it away from things that can burn only if that can be done safely. Don’t pick up or carry a hot, smoking, leaking or swollen battery.

What to do if a lithium-ion battery is smoking or on fire

If a battery catches fire, evacuate immediately and call 911. USFA’s consumer guidance is direct: “If a lithium-ion battery fire occurs, don’t try to put it out. Evacuate and call 911 immediately.” Do not stay to handle the device or attempt household firefighting. Follow instructions from emergency responders.

A lithium-ion cell can enter thermal runaway, a chain reaction of uncontrolled heating. Damaged or overheated cells may release flammable gases, eject components and reignite after a fire appears to have gone out. That is why the USFA’s explanation of battery-fire risks and response emphasizes getting away from an active fire rather than trying to manage it yourself.

How to dispose of a used battery safely

Do not put lithium-ion batteries in household trash or ordinary recycling bins. Take them to an appropriate battery collection or recycling location, and check local rules and the collection site’s acceptance instructions. Battery handling requirements can vary, especially for a damaged battery.

  • Wide Application Scenarios: ideal for battery charging protection in garages, outdoor cycling, delivery services, and home storage; Suitable for lithium batteries of e-bikes, e-scooters, and small electric devices
  1. Find a local collection or recycling location that accepts the battery type.
  2. Follow that location’s instructions for preparing and transporting it.
  3. For an intact used battery, cover its ends and terminals with tape to help prevent accidental discharge and potential fires, as NFPA advises. Battery terminal tape is a task-specific supply for this step, not fire-suppression equipment and not a way to make a damaged battery safe.

See USFA battery safety guidance and NFPA’s safety sheet for consumer disposal guidance.

Why spare lithium batteries go in carry-on baggage

For air travel, spare lithium batteries belong in carry-on baggage, not checked baggage. If an onboard battery or device overheats, expands, smokes or burns, tell the flight crew immediately. Battery capacity limits and other requirements depend on battery type, and exceptions may apply for mobility aids. Check the FAA’s current passenger battery rules for your trip rather than relying on a general watt-hour limit.

What product safety standards do—and don’t—tell you

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission lists voluntary standards including UL 1642, 6th Edition, for lithium batteries and UL 2743, 2nd Edition, for portable power packs. Those listings identify standards; they do not establish that a particular product is certified. Check product-specific documentation and the manufacturer’s instructions instead of inferring certification from a standard’s name. See the CPSC’s batteries and fire standards page.
