Reported lithium-battery incidents aboard commercial aircraft increased, but available figures do not show that smartphone fires specifically are rising at an alarming rate—and they do not establish that pilots are worried. FAA figures cover multiple battery-powered devices, not just phones. For passengers, the practical advice is clear: keep phones and spare batteries in the cabin, and tell the crew immediately if a device overheats, swells, smokes, or burns.
What the numbers show—and what they do not
The FAA’s March 2025 Hazmat Highlights said at least 84 lithium-battery incidents on commercial aircraft were reported in 2024, a record at the time. A later FAA dashboard total, captured on July 30, 2025, showed 89 verified events for 2024. These are differently labeled, dated tallies; the available information does not establish why they differ, so they should not be treated as interchangeable or as a resolved contradiction.
Neither number is a count of smartphone fires. The FAA listing includes incidents involving different lithium batteries and devices. The agency says its list covers events it knows about, is incomplete, and reflects collection and recording methods that have changed over time. These figures therefore describe reported or verified events, not a complete census or a smartphone-specific rate.
A separate dataset from UL Standards & Engagement should also be kept distinct. In a September 9, 2024 release, UL said incidents of aircraft battery thermal runaway in its voluntary reporting program had risen 28%. For its 2023 incident cohort, it reported that 85% of incidents were addressed at warning signs before full thermal runaway, while 15% resulted in fire or explosion. This program has a different collection method from the FAA tally; neither source isolates smartphone fires.

Are smartphone battery fires on planes increasing?
The available figures establish an increase in reported lithium-battery incidents broadly, not an increase in smartphone battery fires specifically. The FAA’s incident examples include a 2022 case in which a passenger’s cell-phone battery overheated and released smoke in flight. That demonstrates that a phone battery event can happen; a single example does not establish a trend.
The claim that pilots are worried is also not established by the FAA guidance cited here. FAA materials describe crew training and recommended response procedures, but training requirements are not evidence of pilots’ personal views.

What to do if your phone gets hot, swells, smokes, or burns
Notify a flight crew member immediately if a lithium-battery device shows these warning signs. The FAA’s passenger guidance says: “Passengers should notify flight crew immediately if their lithium battery or device is overheating, expanding, smoking or burning.” Do not try to manage a cabin fire yourself; alert the crew so trained personnel can respond.

Flight crews have separate procedures and training for recognizing and responding to cabin battery fires. The FAA’s Advisory Circular 120-80B, dated March 16, 2023, covers recommended crew procedures and training. That crew guidance is not a substitute for the passenger instruction to alert the crew promptly.

Where to pack phones, spare batteries, and power banks
FAA passenger guidance says smartphones and other devices containing lithium batteries should be carried in carry-on baggage. Spare lithium batteries and power banks must stay in the cabin as well, including if an airline gate-checks your carry-on. Spare batteries must be protected from damage and short circuit.

Check the battery’s watt-hour rating and the airline’s requirements before travel. These limits describe spare batteries; follow the applicable rules for installed batteries and any airline-specific restrictions.

Keeping spare batteries and battery-powered devices in the cabin lets the crew respond if a device shows signs of failure. A battery problem in checked baggage may be harder for crew to notice promptly. The FAA’s placement guidance and its instruction to report warning signs support keeping these items accessible to the cabin crew—not placing spare batteries in checked luggage.
