Whether Linux feels harder than Windows depends on the task, the distribution, and the specific PC. The available documentation supports a practical comparison of installing apps, updating the system, setting up an operating system, configuring hardware, and using Linux tools on Windows—but it does not establish results from a five-task test. So this guide explains what to compare without presenting unverified personal test results.
What counts as a fair comparison?
“Linux” is not one uniform desktop. The installation and app guidance below is specific to Ubuntu Desktop, and the Windows update information is from Microsoft. Results from one Ubuntu release or Windows PC should not be generalized to every distribution, release, or hardware setup.
For each task, compare the same things: the starting point, number of user actions, whether you needed a graphical interface or terminal, account or network requirements, whether the app or device worked, recovery steps, and any restart or configuration change. Record the actual versions and PC involved; documentation alone cannot show which operating system required less effort on a particular machine.

Ubuntu Desktop includes default applications and documents a graphical route for installing more software through App Center. See Ubuntu’s application installation guide. That gives newcomers a point-and-click path, though it does not mean every Linux distribution uses the same store or workflow.

A May 2025 first-person Ubuntu diary from Tom’s Hardware describes using more than one route, including App Center and command-line package installation. That is one writer’s experience, not a controlled comparison or a finding about every Ubuntu setup. To judge difficulty for your own needs, try installing the same kind of application on each system and note whether the route you prefer is available.
Keeping the system updated
Microsoft describes Windows Update as an essential service for keeping a device secure, current, and working as expected. Ubuntu’s security guidance describes its fixed-release model and support information for LTS releases. The useful comparison is what happens on the exact versions you use: how updates are found, what decisions they require, whether they interrupt your work, and whether a restart is needed.

- 4GB DDR4 System Memory; 128GB Solid State Drive
- 11.6" HD (1366 x 768) Multi-Touch Display
- Combo headphone/microphone jack - Noble Wedge Lock slot - HDMI; 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1
- Windows 11 Pro
There is no comparable measurement here for update duration, interruption, or user effort. Ubuntu support status and timelines depend on the release and package, so check the Ubuntu security and support guidance for the version in question rather than assuming all releases have the same support period.

Trying or installing Ubuntu is a different task from using an already-installed operating system. Ubuntu’s bootable USB instructions cover creating installation media, and its desktop installation guide walks through installation. This route involves more decisions than installing an ordinary application, so it should be evaluated separately.

Some PCs may require attention to configuration issues such as BitLocker or Intel RST. Ubuntu provides installation guidance for these concerns; their inclusion in the documentation does not mean they occur on every machine. If you are only curious about Linux, consider whether you can try it without replacing your current setup, and review the installation steps and relevant device guidance before changing partitions or firmware settings.
Checking hardware and peripherals
Installation guidance can identify configuration concerns, but it does not establish broad compatibility for printers, Wi-Fi adapters, graphics hardware, or specialist peripherals. Compatibility is therefore a machine- and device-specific question, not something a single general claim about Linux can settle.

Before relying on a Linux setup, check the documentation for the exact distribution and device, then test the features you need: network access, display output, printing, audio, and any specialist functions. A report about one person’s peripherals, such as the Tom’s Hardware diary, can offer an example but cannot guarantee the same result on your PC.
Using Linux tools without replacing Windows
If your goal is to run Linux command-line tools or graphical Linux apps rather than move to a Linux desktop, Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) may be a middle path. Microsoft’s WSL installation documentation explains how to set it up on Windows.

WSL is not the same as switching the whole PC to a Linux desktop. Whether it meets your needs depends on the tools and workflows you need to run; verify those requirements before treating it as a substitute for a full Linux installation.
How to decide which feels easier for you
- For routine app installs: compare the graphical options and any terminal steps you actually need.
- For updates: observe prompts, interruptions, and restart requirements on your exact versions.
- For a full switch: account for installation media, setup choices, and possible machine-specific configuration.
- For essential devices: verify each peripheral and feature you depend on rather than relying on broad compatibility claims.
- For Linux tools only: check whether WSL supports your workflow before replacing Windows.
These comparisons answer a more useful question than whether Linux is universally “harder”: which system makes the tasks you personally perform easier on your specific PC?
