Linux can work very well on laptops, but compatibility is not all-or-nothing: a system may run smoothly while a particular component or feature needs newer drivers, firmware, or device-specific support. The five areas below are useful checks, not a canonical list of failures. Results depend on the exact laptop, its components, distribution, and kernel version.
Why laptop hardware support is feature-specific
A laptop’s brand name alone does not establish that every feature will work. Certification guidance treats areas such as graphics acceleration, battery monitoring, suspend, and fingerprint readers as separate tests, so check the functions you rely on individually. Red Hat’s 2025 Hardware Certification Program Policy Guide documents these as distinct areas; it does not show that they are generally broken on Linux.
For a useful compatibility check, identify the exact laptop model and internal component identifiers, then look for support on the distribution and kernel release you plan to use. Where support depends on platform firmware or a device-specific project, check that source as well.
1. Suspend, lid-close sleep, and resume
A laptop may fail to enter suspend, wake unreliably, or behave unexpectedly after the lid closes if its hardware support or drivers are incomplete. Ubuntu’s support guidance addresses the question “Why does my computer turn off when I close the lid?” and notes that hardware or driver support can affect suspend. Ubuntu’s lid-close guidance is specific to its support context, not a guarantee about every distribution or laptop.

Sleep transitions can also involve the system’s platform firmware. The Linux kernel’s System Sleep States documentation describes firmware participation in ACPI suspend transitions. That is why suspend and wake behavior should be checked for the whole laptop configuration rather than inferred from whether Linux boots.
2. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth coexistence
Some wireless configurations can encounter coexistence challenges when Wi-Fi and Bluetooth share or contend for radio resources. Linux Wireless documents device- and driver-specific guidance for certain Intel wireless devices in its iwlwifi documentation. This does not mean Linux Wi-Fi is broadly unreliable; it means that the chipset and driver matter when diagnosing a particular problem.

When checking a laptop, note the wireless chipset rather than relying only on the laptop’s product family. If a coexistence issue appears, consult documentation for that specific device and driver before concluding that all wireless functions are unsupported.

3. Fingerprint readers
Fingerprint-reader compatibility needs its own check. Red Hat’s 2025 certification policy lists fingerprint readers as a distinct hardware test area, which is a reason to verify the sensor on the exact model and target system—not evidence that fingerprint readers generally fail under Linux or that a particular sensor is unsupported.

Before relying on fingerprint sign-in, verify that the reader is recognized and usable with the distribution and software configuration you intend to run. A laptop being certified or supported in other respects does not by itself establish this feature’s status.
4. Webcams and newer device-specific features
Camera support can vary with platform generation and implementation. Asahi Linux’s M5 Series Feature Support page reports status by feature for the Apple Silicon devices it covers; its 2026 M5 entries list webcam support, along with GPU, suspend/sleep, and battery information, as TBA. This is a platform-specific example of support being incomplete for particular newer hardware, not a statement about ordinary x86 laptops.

Red Hat’s 2025 certification guide treats accelerated graphics and battery monitoring as separate test areas. That distinction is useful when checking a laptop: confirm that graphics acceleration and battery reporting work on the exact model and target distribution. The guide does not establish that Linux generally lacks either capability.

Also distinguish a battery icon or percentage being visible from the standby behavior you need. The former is battery reporting; the latter depends on the system’s sleep behavior and platform support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check a laptop before you depend on it
- Match the exact model. Look up the full model identifier and, where available, the identifiers for its wireless chipset, fingerprint reader, camera, and graphics hardware.
- Specify the software you plan to use. Check support for your intended distribution and kernel release; a result for another software version may not apply.
- Verify each essential feature separately. Check suspend and wake, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, fingerprint sign-in, webcam operation, graphics acceleration, and battery reporting according to your needs.
- Check firmware and project-specific support. Firmware participates in some power transitions, while newer or specialized platforms may rely on device- or project-specific support information.
- Test the behaviors that matter in practice. If possible, verify lid-close sleep and resume, standby behavior, wireless use, camera access, and any security or graphics feature you depend on before committing to the configuration.
Compatibility evidence should be tied to the exact model and software versions tested. A broad claim about a laptop brand, or a successful installation alone, cannot establish that every component and power feature will work as expected.
