Frost is a free, MIT-licensed icon theme for Linux with a frosted-glass look, vivid colors, and crisp white symbols. Its creator, Sayantan, says it covers 134 file types and includes artwork drawn specifically for small icon sizes. The project lists GNOME, KDE Plasma 6, and COSMIC as supported desktops; those are project claims, not independent compatibility test results.
What makes Frost different?
Frost uses color to distinguish broad file categories and symbols to show file families. Sayantan says its artwork covers 134 file types, with small labels appearing on icons at 48 pixels and above. These are specifications published by the creator, not an independently audited count or usability study.

The project also describes folder and application icons, top-bar status icons, HiDPI assets, customizable color presets, and project-folder marks that indicate detected technology stacks. Brand icons are left unchanged. For icons Frost has not redrawn, its documented fallback order is Papirus, then Adwaita.

Small icons are drawn for small sizes
Rather than relying only on scaled-down versions of larger artwork, Frost says it supplies separately drawn 16, 22, and 24 pixel icons. That may help preserve detail at small sizes, though the project specifications do not establish how legible the icons will be on every screen or desktop.

Is Frost compatible with your Linux desktop?
The project documentation names GNOME, KDE Plasma, and COSMIC. A September 21, 2026 update specifically says Frost works with KDE Plasma 6 and COSMIC and includes GNOME selection instructions. Treat this as the project’s compatibility claim: no independent installation or compatibility testing is established here.
After installation, choose Frost in your desktop’s appearance settings. The README gives these paths:

- KDE Plasma: System Settings → Colors & Themes → Icons.
- COSMIC: Settings → Appearance → Icons.
Labels can vary between desktop versions. If you do not see the stated path, look in the appearance or theme settings for the icon-theme selector.

How to install and select Frost
The project provides a shell installer and a manual archive option. Its README says installation places Frost in your user-local icon directory; it does not change the active icon theme automatically. Review the project’s current instructions and installer before running a command from a software project.

Use the project installer
- Open the Frost project instructions at github.com/SayantanRC/frost and review the installation directions and script.
- Run the install command provided by the project. The optional
--mimeflag enables its developer file-type fixes; you can omit it for the icon theme alone. - Open your desktop’s icon-theme settings using the path for GNOME, KDE Plasma, or COSMIC above, then select Frost.
The documented install command is supplied by the project, but this article does not claim the script has been executed or security-reviewed. Check the repository for the exact current command before running it.
Install from an archive
The README also documents manual installation from an archive. Follow the project’s current archive instructions, place the theme in the user-local icon directory as directed, and select Frost in your desktop’s icon-theme settings.

Remove Frost
The project provides an uninstall command in its instructions. Use that command to remove the installed theme; consult the README for the exact current syntax.
What the optional MIME fix changes
Linux file-type associations can affect which type and icon a desktop displays. Sayantan points to developer-oriented examples such as .ts, .tsx, go.mod, .tf, go.sum, .key, bun.lock, .env, and Dockerfile. Frost’s optional MIME fix aims to improve how such files are classified and is described by the README as reversible.
These examples do not mean every Linux distribution or configuration classifies those files the same way. If a file still shows an unexpected icon after installing the add-on, the underlying file-type association on your system may be responsible rather than the artwork itself.
Where to get Frost and what its license means
Frost is available through its GitHub repository, which also points to a listing on gnome-look.org. The project identifies its license as MIT and says the artwork is included. The current state and details of the separate store listing are not established here.
MIT is a permissive open-source license. For the terms that apply to copying or redistributing the project and its artwork, consult the license included with the repository.
How to decide whether Frost fits
Before changing your icon theme, consider the details that matter for your setup:
- Desktop: Confirm that your environment and version are among the project’s stated targets.
- File coverage: Check whether the formats you use are included; the project’s count is a creator-published specification.
- Small-size artwork: Frost says it draws separate artwork at 16, 22, and 24 pixels, and adds labels at 48 pixels and above.
- Unmodified icons: Icons not redrawn for Frost fall back to Papirus, then Adwaita, according to the README.
- Appearance: Consider whether the frosted-glass treatment, category colors, and available color presets suit your desktop.
- Installation and license: Choose between the project’s installer and documented archive method, and read the included MIT license if you plan to redistribute the work.
Sayantan describes Frost as a response to finding some existing icon collections incomplete or inconsistent in real file lists. That is the creator’s motivation, not a comparative test or a claim that Frost is better for every user.
