Sen. Lindsey Graham said in May 2024 that his phone was in FBI custody after someone impersonating Sen. Chuck Schumer contacted him. Graham’s spokesperson said the Senate Sergeant at Arms was investigating a “possible hack”—not that a breach had been confirmed. Public reports did not establish who contacted Graham, how the impersonation was carried out, or whether any information was accessed.
What happened to Lindsey Graham’s phone?
At the Hill & Valley Forum, Graham said, “My phone is in the hands of the FBI now,” according to Axios’s May 2, 2024 report. Axios reported that someone posing as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer had contacted the South Carolina Republican. The Independent’s contemporaneous account also reported that the phone was with the FBI after a scam caller impersonating Schumer contacted him.
Graham spokesperson Taylor Reidy said, “The Sergeant at Arms is investigating a possible hack of Senator Graham’s phone.” The Senate Sergeant at Arms investigates security matters involving senators and the Senate; the statement describes an investigation, not a public finding that Graham’s device was compromised.
Was Graham’s phone actually hacked?
The public accounts confirm a reported impersonation attempt, Graham’s statement that the FBI had his phone, and a Senate Sergeant at Arms investigation into a possible hack. They do not establish that the phone was breached. “Hacked” in descriptions of the incident should therefore be understood as an allegation, rather than a confirmed technical conclusion.

What later FBI warnings say about official impersonation
In a May 15, 2025 alert, the FBI described a campaign in which malicious actors impersonated senior U.S. officials through smishing (fraudulent text messages) and vishing (voice calls, including AI-generated voice messages). The agency said the activity dated back to at least April 2025. It described a pattern of building rapport before seeking access to personal accounts.
