LILYGO’s T-FPGA puts an Espressif ESP32-S3R8 wireless microcontroller and a Gowin GW1NSR-4C FPGA on an M.2-format development module. The FPGA provides 4,608 LUT4 logic elements and a separate JTAG programming path; a carrier shield adds maker-friendly connections, including four Pmod interfaces, STEMMA-QT/Qwiic, a 20-pin header and an 18650 battery holder. Before programming the FPGA, initialize the board’s AXP2101 power-management rails by uploading LILYGO’s turn_on_power ESP32-S3 example.
What the LILYGO T-FPGA is
The T-FPGA is a compact development platform built around two programmable devices: an ESP32-S3R8 microcontroller and a Gowin GW1NSR-LV4CQN48PC6/I5 FPGA, identified by LILYGO as the GW1NSR-4C. LILYGO describes the board as an integrated ESP32-S3 and FPGA control board, while its repository notes six communication lines between the MCU and FPGA. This arrangement lets the ESP32-S3 handle wireless connectivity and software tasks while the FPGA implements custom digital logic.
The module uses an M.2 form factor; independent hardware coverage gives its dimensions as 60 × 42 mm. That describes the module, not necessarily the full footprint of a carrier setup. The M.2 format also does not by itself establish compatibility with a laptop’s M.2 slot: this is a development board with dedicated USB and I/O connections.

| Part | Documented specification or role |
|---|---|
| Microcontroller | Espressif ESP32-S3R8, dual-core LX7; 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5 LE; 16 MB flash and 8 MB PSRAM, according to LILYGO’s product page. |
| FPGA | Gowin GW1NSR-LV4CQN48PC6/I5 (GW1NSR-4C); 4,608 LUT4, 256 Kb FPGA flash, 64 Mb HyperRAM and an embedded Cortex-M3 hard core, according to LILYGO’s product page and the official repository. |
| Software and debugging | LILYGO lists Arduino, PlatformIO and MicroPython support; the documented workflow also includes Verilog examples and JTAG debugging in the official repository. |
| MCU–FPGA connection | Six communication lines are noted in the official repository; LILYGO’s repository does not specify their individual protocols or pin assignments. |
The ESP32-S3 and FPGA have distinct jobs and toolchains. Arduino, PlatformIO and MicroPython are listed for the microcontroller side; FPGA logic is described through Verilog examples and a JTAG programming workflow. The board is therefore more than an ESP32 add-on, but it also requires a separate FPGA setup rather than treating the FPGA as another Arduino peripheral.

What the carrier shield adds
Independent hardware coverage describes a carrier shield that exposes interfaces useful for prototypes and peripheral modules:
- Four Pmod interfaces for compatible expansion modules.
- STEMMA-QT/Qwiic connectors for supported small peripheral boards.
- A 20-pin I/O header.
- An 18650 battery holder.
- USB-C OTG for the ESP32-S3 and a separate USB-C FPGA/JTAG port.
Check the specific listing before buying: the available facts describe the shield and its interfaces, but do not establish whether every seller’s T-FPGA package includes the shield, battery, cables or add-on modules.

How to program the FPGA—and why JTAG may not detect it
The important setup dependency is power. The AXP2101 power-management IC controls the FPGA bank voltages, and LILYGO’s repository instructs users to upload the ESP32-S3 turn_on_power example first so the PMU rails are enabled before attempting FPGA JTAG programming.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Prepare the ESP32-S3 connection. Connect to the board’s ESP32-S3 USB-C OTG port and configure the Arduino or PlatformIO workflow as described in the official repository.
- Enable the power rails. Upload the repository’s
turn_on_powerexample to the ESP32-S3. This initializes the AXP2101-controlled rails required by the FPGA banks. - Connect the FPGA/JTAG path. Use the separate USB-C FPGA/JTAG port and the JTAG connector model documented by LILYGO. The FPGA programming connection is distinct from the ESP32-S3 USB connection.
- Run the Gowin programming workflow. Use the repository’s Verilog examples and documented JTAG procedure with the appropriate Gowin tools.
If the FPGA JTAG device is not detected, check the setup in this order:

- Confirm that
turn_on_powerhas been uploaded and run; an uninitialized PMU rail is the specific prerequisite LILYGO calls out. - Verify that the cable and host connection use the FPGA/JTAG port, not only the ESP32-S3 OTG port.
- Check the connector model and wiring against the repository’s JTAG documentation, and confirm that the chosen programming setup recognizes the Gowin device.
LILYGO’s documentation establishes the power prerequisite and separate programming path; it does not specify a complete host-by-host driver troubleshooting matrix.
Who should consider the T-FPGA
The board is a fit for developers who want wireless MCU software and programmable logic in one compact platform, particularly when the shield’s Pmod, STEMMA-QT/Qwiic or header connections suit the project. Its 4,608 LUT4 FPGA and six MCU-to-FPGA communication lines define the documented starting point; choose based on the logic capacity and I/O your design needs, rather than assuming an FPGA of this size will suit every hardware-acceleration or digital-design workload.

When comparing it with another FPGA development board, check the logic resources and vendor toolchain, the MCU’s wireless and software ecosystem, exposed I/O types and counts, carrier and battery options, and the USB/JTAG workflow. Compare complete configurations too: the module, shield, programming cable, peripheral modules and battery may not all come in one package.
Availability and listing details
LILYGO’s product page lists a price of $18.98 and shows the item as sold out; price and stock can change. The official repository says the T-FPGA is available from LILYGO and Amazon, but that statement does not confirm present availability in a particular region or the contents of a given listing. Check the seller’s current page for stock, shipping, price and included accessories.
