This September 2024 tech roundup covered three separate developments: Bluetooth SIG published Core Specification 6.0, Android Authority reported OSOM Products was effectively shutting down, and Microsoft announced new Surface devices for business customers. The announcements were current in 2024; they are not new launches in 2026.
What changed with Bluetooth 6.0?
Bluetooth SIG released Bluetooth Core Specification 6.0 on September 3, 2024. The specification defines new capabilities for compatible implementations, but its publication did not mean that existing devices gained them automatically. Whether a product supports a feature depends on its hardware and software implementation.
The most consumer-facing addition is Bluetooth Channel Sounding. Bluetooth SIG describes it as a way to support distance awareness, with possible uses in item finding and range-aware security for digital keys. The specification does not, by itself, guarantee a particular accuracy, security outcome, or compatibility across devices.
Six feature areas in the specification
- Bluetooth Channel Sounding: Enables standards-based distance awareness for potential applications such as finding items and digital keys.
- Decision-based advertising filtering: Allows a scanner to use a primary-channel packet to decide whether to scan for related secondary-channel packets, potentially avoiding irrelevant scans.
- Monitoring advertisers: Lets a host receive notice when a device of interest enters or leaves range.
- Isochronous Adaptation Layer enhancement: Adds a framing mode intended to support latency-sensitive use cases and reliability.
- Link Layer extended feature set: Supports exchanging information about a larger set of link-layer capabilities.
- Frame-space update: Makes spacing negotiable in cases where it had previously been fixed at 150 microseconds.
These are specification-level changes, not a promise that every Bluetooth 6.0 product will implement every feature. Bluetooth SIG’s September 3, 2024 announcement describes the feature set.

Is Bluetooth 6.0 available in devices?
The specification was available on September 3, 2024, but that is different from a device being available with Bluetooth 6.0 features. Product support depends on manufacturers implementing the relevant capabilities in hardware and software. The announcement does not establish a roster of products that support Bluetooth 6.0, so it cannot be used to identify a particular compatible phone, tracker, or accessory.
What happened to OSOM?
Android Authority reported on September 4, 2024 that OSOM Products was effectively shutting down. According to the outlet, CEO Jason Keats had announced the decision internally, most employees were expected to be laid off that Friday, and a small group of engineers would remain as contractors to deliver another Solana Saga security update in December. That report describes the situation at the time; it does not establish a formal dissolution date or OSOM’s present corporate status.
The outlet said former Essential employees founded OSOM in 2020 to develop privacy-focused products, including the OV1 phone and a USB-C privacy cable. The phone was developed with Solana and became the Saga. Android Authority reported that Solana did not choose OSOM for Saga Two; OSOM then pursued an AI-camera pivot and a possible sale to HP before running out of funding. These details are the outlet’s account, as set out in its September 4, 2024 report.

Which Surface devices did Microsoft announce for business?
On September 4, 2024, Microsoft announced three products it said would reach business customers later that month: Surface Pro 10 with 5G, Surface Pro 11th Edition, and Surface Laptop 7th Edition. Microsoft described Intel Core Ultra and Snapdragon X Elite/Plus processor options across the lineup. These were the names and availability expectations in that 2024 announcement, not a current launch notice.
| Device named in Microsoft’s 2024 announcement | Form factor or connectivity stated | Processor information stated |
|---|---|---|
| Surface Pro 10 with 5G | Tablet; 5G connectivity | Intel Core Ultra and Snapdragon X Elite/Plus options across the lineup; the post does not assign a specific processor to this model |
| Surface Pro 11th Edition | Tablet | Intel Core Ultra and Snapdragon X Elite/Plus options across the lineup; the post does not assign a specific processor to this model |
| Surface Laptop 7th Edition | Laptop | Intel Core Ultra and Snapdragon X Elite/Plus options across the lineup; the post does not assign a specific processor to this model |
Microsoft’s September 4, 2024 announcement positioned the Pro 11th Edition and Laptop 7th Edition as Copilot+ PCs. For procurement, the distinctions to check are tablet versus laptop form factor, cellular connectivity, processor platform, and organizational deployment needs; the announcement alone does not provide a full configuration comparison.
Bluetooth details for the Surface Pro 10
Microsoft’s Surface Pro 10 fact sheet lists Bluetooth 5.3 for the Wi-Fi-only model and Bluetooth Core 5.4 for the Wi-Fi plus 5G model. This is specific to the two Surface Pro 10 configurations; it should not be generalized to the Surface Pro 11th Edition or Surface Laptop 7th Edition. See Microsoft’s Surface Pro 10 fact sheet.

How long are the 2024 business Surface models serviced?
Microsoft’s driver and firmware lifecycle documentation lists these servicing end dates for the business models below. They refer to driver and firmware servicing, not a general promise covering every kind of support.

| Surface Laptop 6 for Business | April 9, 2030 |
| Surface Pro 10 with 5G for Business | October 11, 2030 |
Microsoft’s Surface driver and firmware lifecycle page lists the dates. Microsoft’s supported operating systems page includes newer 2025 and 2026 Surface products, so the 2024 announcement should be understood as a snapshot of the lineup at that time.
