Neither Lidl nor Aldi is automatically the better choice. The right store depends on what your nearest locations stock, the total price of the groceries you actually buy, the offers you can use, and whether the trip is convenient. Compare local stores and a consistent household basket rather than relying on a universal “cheaper” claim.
Start with the stores available in your country
Lidl and Aldi are not single, identical formats worldwide. Store coverage, product ranges, rewards, prices, and services can vary by country and location. ALDI’s international site directs shoppers to national markets and identifies Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd as separate operations in Germany: ALDI’s country sites. Lidl likewise describes its operations and services market by market.
That matters when comparing advice or offers you find online: a feature available in one country may not exist in another. Check the websites or apps for the specific stores you would visit.
How to compare what your regular basket costs
The available information does not establish that either chain is consistently cheaper across locations or shopping baskets. To find the better value for your household, compare the same planned items at nearby stores on the same day.

- Write down your regular items. Include the groceries you buy most often, plus any dietary essentials or preferred brands that are difficult to substitute.
- Match products fairly. Compare equivalent sizes and qualities. A lower shelf price may not mean better value if the package is smaller or the product is not an equivalent.
- Record the full price. Note each item’s price, package size, and store. Separate ordinary prices from temporary offers and member-only prices.
- Count only usable rewards. Include a coupon or offer only if it applies to a purchase you planned to make. Check whether it requires an account or app in your market.
- Compare the basket total. Use the same list and date for both stores. A result from one location or one week is a local snapshot, not a general Lidl-versus-Aldi verdict.
How to compare selection and shopping experience
Check for the items you actually need
Look for the specific staples, dietary products, and brands your household relies on. Then consider whether each store has useful alternatives if a preferred item is unavailable. A broad-looking selection is less important than reliably finding the products that make your shopping work.
Lidl US describes its offer as a curated selection that includes local produce, fresh meat and seafood, imported specialties, European pastries, and rotating non-food items such as clothing and cookware. In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority said in provisional findings that Aldi, Lidl GB, and Lidl NI carry a full range of groceries, while they may offer less choice within some categories than some other large grocers. The findings concern proposed grocery land-agreement rules, not a head-to-head count of Aldi and Lidl products or a judgement about quality. The CMA said no final decision had been made in its announcement: Aldi and Lidl should be subject to the same rules as major supermarkets.

Rewards can change the effective cost of a basket, but only when their terms fit what you already buy. In the US, Lidl says its Lidl Plus app became available to download on July 1, 2026, with exclusive offers beginning July 15, 2026. Its FAQ describes a free program with points, member-exclusive offers, personalized coupons, digital receipts, and weekly ads; it also says shoppers can shop without an account or app. These details are US-specific. Check the Lidl US Lidl Plus FAQs and local terms before counting an offer as a saving.

Factor in the trip, not just the shelf prices
Compare distance, opening hours, ease of getting the shop done, and whether one store is more likely to have your usual essentials. If a lower-priced basket means an extra trip to another shop for missing items, the time and travel may outweigh the difference. These factors depend on your circumstances; there is no single store ranking that accounts for every shopper’s route and schedule.

- Choose by basket total if both stores meet your needs and a same-day, like-for-like comparison shows one costs less for the products you buy.
- Use rewards as a tie-breaker when the offers apply to planned purchases and the account or app requirements suit you.
- Shop both selectively if each has distinct items you value and the extra stop is worth the time and travel.
