LibreOffice 26.8.1 is the first maintenance update in the 26.8 family. Announced by The Document Foundation on 2 October 2026, it includes around 40 bug fixes, with particular attention to Microsoft Office document compatibility and text and CSV imports. The official count is approximate, not a verified “40+.”
What changed in LibreOffice 26.8.1?
The update targets issues users can encounter when opening or importing documents, especially files saved in Microsoft’s Office Open XML formats: DOCX, XLSX and PPTX. The Foundation also cites more reliable text and CSV imports across several character encodings.

These are the areas specifically named in The Document Foundation’s 26.8.1 announcement. It describes the overall scope as “around 40 bug fixes”; it does not establish an exact count or confirm that the total exceeds 40.
How 26.8.1 fits into the 26.8 release
Version 26.8.1 is a maintenance release, not a new major feature release. The parent LibreOffice 26.8 arrived on 26 August 2026 for Windows, macOS and Linux, with changes including Writer’s Paragraph Composer, native OpenType variable-font support, improved bidirectional text handling, Calc pivot-table calculated fields, multiple page sizes in Impress and Draw, and presentation sections in Impress.
There is an important limit to one part of the 26.8 document-exchange work: support for several newer OOXML chart types preserves those charts when files are saved and reopened, but LibreOffice cannot yet render or edit them. The Foundation also states that LibreOffice 26.8 contains no generative AI features. See its 26.8 release announcement for the major-release details.
Should you upgrade from LibreOffice 26.2?
The Foundation recommends 26.8.1 for more experienced users who want the newer features. It says production environments can continue on 26.2 in the short term; that branch is supported until 30 November 2026, after which organizations should plan a transition to the 26.8 family.
- Consider 26.8.1 if the named document-compatibility or import fixes address problems you encounter, or if you need features introduced in the 26.8 family.
- Plan and test before changing a production deployment if stability, document workflows or managed rollout requirements take priority. The Foundation’s guidance does not amount to a blanket upgrade instruction for every organization.
- For large deployments requiring formal support, the Foundation points to LibreOffice ecosystem enterprise editions. Support can include SLAs and optional custom development; security updates may be maintained for three to five years, depending on the provider and agreement. Confirm the actual scope and term with the provider.
Is LibreOffice 26.8.1 available to download?
The 2 October announcement reported that download-mirror problems had delayed the release and that 26.8.0 had been restored to the download page. Availability can change as mirrors recover, so check the Foundation’s download page and status page for current information before installing. The release is intended for Windows, macOS and Linux.

What the wider 26.8 figures mean
The Foundation says LibreOffice 26.8 involved 206 contributors, including 155 volunteers, and is available in 120 languages. A 1 October 2026 recap reported more than one million downloads during 26.8’s first week, but that figure counts downloads from the project’s official downloads page and excludes some Linux users who obtained the software through distribution repositories. It is not a total of all installations or users.
