LG Display began mass-producing a 27-inch fourth-generation OLED monitor panel in June 2025, reporting peak brightness of 1,500 nits at APL 1.5%. That panel runs at 280Hz. The separate 540Hz panel it had developed was then planned for mass production in the second half of 2025; LG Electronics later announced a finished 540Hz QHD gaming monitor in January 2026.
What did LG start mass-producing?
On June 27, 2025, panel maker LG Display announced mass production of a 27-inch monitor panel using its fourth-generation Primary RGB Tandem OLED technology. LG described the panel as having a 280Hz refresh rate, a manufacturer-rated 0.03ms response time, and peak brightness of 1,500 nits at APL 1.5%. The brightness figure is tied to that low average picture level; it does not mean the entire screen produces 1,500 nits in ordinary use. LG Display’s announcement also explains response time as the time a pixel takes to change from one color to another. The 0.03ms figure is LG’s specification, not an independent measurement.
How bright is LG’s fourth-generation OLED?
For the 27-inch monitor panel announced in June 2025, LG Display’s stated peak is 1,500 nits at APL 1.5%. APL, or average picture level, describes how much of the image is bright on average, so this qualification matters: a small bright area and a predominantly bright image place different demands on a display. The announcement does not establish sustained full-screen brightness or independent test results.

Was LG mass-producing a 540Hz OLED monitor panel?
Not according to the June 2025 announcement. LG Display said it had developed a separate 540Hz OLED monitor panel and expected to begin mass production in the second half of 2025. That was a forward-looking plan at the time, distinct from the 280Hz panel already in mass production. LG Display’s 2025 annual report later records development of a 27-inch QHD 540Hz OLED monitor product with DFR 720Hz, providing company-document corroboration of the capability.
What is LG’s 540Hz OLED monitor?
LG Electronics, which makes finished products and is distinct from panel maker LG Display, announced the UltraGear 27GX790B in January 2026. It is a 27-inch QHD OLED monitor with two refresh-rate modes: QHD at 540Hz or HD at 720Hz. The 720Hz mode trades resolution for a higher refresh rate; it is not 720Hz at QHD. LG Electronics announced a U.S. preorder price of $999.99 at launch, but that historical announcement does not establish the monitor’s current price, stock, or availability in any region. LG Electronics’ announcement gives the product’s launch details.

What does 540Hz dual mode mean for buyers?
Refresh rate is the number of times per second a display can update. In the 27GX790B’s announced modes, the choice is between QHD resolution at 540 updates per second and HD resolution at 720. The faster mode may suit a use case that prioritizes motion smoothness over image detail, but the announcement alone does not establish real-world performance in games or whether a particular computer can drive either mode. LG Display’s stated 0.03ms response time is a panel-maker specification, not a substitute for independent testing of the complete monitor.
What the brightness and verification claims do—and do not—show
LG Display said UL Solutions verified Perfect Reproduction under lighting conditions up to 500 lux. That is a verification concerning reproduction under ambient lighting; 500 lux is not the monitor’s brightness output. LG Display’s UL verification release describes the claim.

LG Display’s executive Hyeon-woo Lee characterized OLED’s black levels and response times as capabilities “fundamentally unattainable by LCD monitors.” That is the company’s positioning, not a neutral finding that establishes an absolute comparison across all LCD and OLED products. Neither the panel announcements nor the cited company report establish independent comparative test results for the UltraGear 27GX790B.
