If your LG TV keeps turning off, first check whether a Power Off Timer is set. If shutdowns happen when a set-top box or another HDMI device wakes or sleeps, test Simplink (HDMI-CEC) and that device’s power settings. Menu paths vary by webOS version and model, so use the route that matches your TV.
Start with the timing and trigger
- It turns off at about the same clock time: check the Power Off Timer.
- It turns off when an HDMI-connected device changes power state: test Simplink and the connected device’s power controls.
- Neither pattern fits: check for a software update, then power-cycle the TV.
These clues help narrow the cause; they do not establish that any one cause is responsible for every LG TV shutdown.
1. Turn off an unwanted Power Off Timer
A scheduled shutdown can look like a fault. If the TV turns off at a repeatable time, check whether Power Off Timer is enabled. LG notes that the TV’s clock must be correct for timer setup and that menu labels differ by webOS generation and model. - 2022 webOS 22: Settings → All Settings → General → System → Time & Timer → Timers.
- 2020 webOS 5.0: Settings → All Settings → General → Time → Timers.
LG lists different routes for other versions, including webOS 6.0, webOS 4.5 and earlier, and Netcast. If Power Off Timer is on and you do not want a scheduled shutdown, switch it off.

There is also a narrower timer-related behavior: LG says that a TV started by Power On Timer may turn off automatically after two or four hours without remote input, depending on the model. This applies to timer-initiated startup, not necessarily to ordinary unexpected shutdowns.
2. Test Simplink when an HDMI device is involved
Simplink is LG’s name for HDMI-CEC, which lets connected HDMI equipment participate in control and power behavior. If the TV shuts off in step with a set-top box, console, soundbar, or another HDMI device, temporarily disable Simplink and observe whether the shutdown stops. Example routes
- 2022 webOS 22 and 2021 webOS 6.0: All Settings → General → Devices or External Devices → HDMI Settings → Simplink (HDMI-CEC).
- 2020 webOS 5.0: All Settings → Connection → Device Connection Settings.
Older versions may show a separate Auto Power option. LG says Auto Power is not available as a separate option in this troubleshooting context on webOS 6.0 or later, so disabling Simplink itself is the test there.
Disabling Simplink can stop external devices from controlling the TV; LG specifically notes that external-device controls become invalid when Simplink is disabled on webOS 6.0 or later. Treat this as a diagnostic test. If it does not help and you rely on those controls, turn Simplink back on.

3. Check the connected device’s power settings
If the TV’s shutdown is linked to a set-top box, check that box for TV power synchronization or automatic power standby and disable those options temporarily. Their names and locations depend on the provider or manufacturer, so consult the device’s settings or support rather than relying on a universal menu path.
4. Check for an LG TV software update
If the shutdown does not appear to be caused by a setting, LG recommends checking for a current software version. Its guidance gives these routes, though the exact labels can vary by model:

- webOS 5.0 or later: Settings → All Settings → Support → Software Update → Check for Updates.
- webOS 4.5: All Settings → General → About This TV → Check for Updates.
Follow the on-screen instructions if an update is available. LG includes software checking in its TV power troubleshooting guidance.
5. Power-cycle the TV

- Turn off the TV and unplug it from power.
- Hold the TV’s physical power button for 30 seconds. Its location varies by model.
- Leave the TV off and unplugged for five minutes.
- Reconnect the TV and turn it on.
If the TV still turns off after checking the relevant settings, updating software, and power-cycling, LG advises seeking service assistance. Its set-top-box troubleshooting guidance recommends contacting an LG Electronics service technician for diagnosis.
Why this guide has five checks, not seven universal fixes
LG’s cited instructions support these five useful checks, but they do not establish seven distinct fixes that apply to every model. Adding speculative hardware purchases or unsupported resets would not make the troubleshooting more reliable. Because menu paths and some behaviors depend on the model or webOS version, identify your exact model and software version before using a route that does not match your screen.
