If your LG Smart TV has no sound, first check that it is not muted and that Sound Out is set to the speakers you intend to use. Then check the volume and connection on the device playing the program. If those checks do not help, run the TV’s built-in sound test to narrow down whether the issue is with the TV or the audio source.
Check mute, volume, and the selected sound output
- Unmute the TV and raise its volume. If the program comes from a cable box, console, or other device, check that device’s mute and volume controls too.
- Open Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Out and select the intended speakers. Choose Use TV Speaker on many newer LG models, or Internal TV Speaker on some older models. Menu labels and paths vary by model and webOS version.
If you recently disconnected a soundbar or speaker, the TV may still be set to send audio to it. LG notes that a missing or unresponsive volume indicator can also point to an external output being selected. See LG’s model-specific support information for the path for your TV.
If sound is missing from an HDMI-connected device
- Confirm the TV is on the correct input, and make sure playback is not paused.
- Check the connected device’s own mute and volume settings.
- Unplug and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Restart the TV and the connected device. If sound is still missing, test with another HDMI cable if one is available.
A cable is worth replacing only if a known-good cable test or visible damage points to it; it is not a general fix for silent TV speakers, apps, or other audio problems. LG’s troubleshooting steps do not specify a particular cable version for this test. See LG USA Support for its HDMI troubleshooting guidance.

Make sure the speaker is powered on, unmuted, and turned up. In the TV’s Sound Out menu, select an output that matches the connection—such as HDMI/ARC, optical, Bluetooth, or another wired option. Check that the cable is firmly connected at both ends and that it uses the appropriate ports on the TV and speaker.

If both the TV speakers and an external speaker are playing, the audio may echo or fall out of sync because of processing delay. LG suggests choosing one output, setting Digital Sound Output to PCM, or adjusting AV Sync as appropriate. The available settings depend on the model and connection.
Run LG’s built-in sound test
A Sound Test or Sound Self-Diagnosis can help distinguish a TV-speaker problem from an issue with a program source or signal. For webOS 23/24, LG documents the path Settings → Support → Sound Self-Diagnosis. During this test, the TV switches to internal speakers and volume 20, then restores the previous volume. Use the instructions for your exact model: older TVs may place the test under Support, OLED Care, Device Self-Care, Additional Settings, or Sound.

LG’s menu paths vary by webOS generation. Its support library provides model-specific guidance; search using your TV’s model number if the menu labels above do not match.
If the sound test and connection checks do not fix it
If sound remains absent after the basic checks and the internal test, contact LG support or arrange an assessment by a qualified technician. Those results alone do not establish that a speaker or audio board has failed.

If both the picture and sound are absent, LG documents this power reset: disconnect the TV from power, hold its physical power button for about 10 seconds, reconnect it, and turn it on. Follow model-specific guidance if your set has a different procedure. LG’s support guidance is US-oriented; service options and firmware details may differ by region.
