LG.Philips LCD’s planned Poland facility was a TFT-LCD module assembly plant, not a plant for fabricating the underlying LCD panels. Announced in September 2005 for the Wroclaw area, the project was later reported to have begun full-scale production on March 30, 2007, at Kobierzyce, near Wroclaw.
What LG.Philips LCD planned to build
LG.Philips LCD announced a TFT-LCD module plant in the Wroclaw area in September 2005. It described the facility as a “back-end” production and assembly site: the company planned to make display modules in Poland while keeping technology-intensive front-end TFT-LCD panel production in Korea. The distinction matters—the announcement concerned assembling modules nearer European customers, not relocating panel fabrication to Poland.
The proposed product mix included TV modules in 26-, 32-, 37- and 42-inch sizes, along with monitor modules of 19 inches and above. In its 2007 production announcement, the company said the Poland site would mainly make modules for LCD televisions 32 inches and larger. LG.Philips LCD’s 2005 announcement and its 2007 production announcement describe the project and product focus.
What “back-end” means in an LCD supply chain
Front-end: making the panel
Front-end production creates the TFT-LCD panel itself through the more technology-intensive display manufacturing process. LG.Philips LCD said it would keep this work in Korea as part of the plan.

Back-end: making the module
Module production and assembly turns panels and associated components into units that can be incorporated into televisions or monitors. Locating that work in Poland was intended to put production closer to the European market and customers. It should not be described as a Polish LCD panel fabrication plant.

Why the company said it chose Poland
LG.Philips LCD said a regional production base could help it serve Europe’s growing LCD-TV market through timely supply, lower distribution costs and faster technical support. Those were the company’s stated reasons and expected benefits, not independently measured results. Its 2005 announcement also said it might encourage Korean suppliers of core module parts, including backlight units, to consider regional manufacturing.
What the announcements do—and do not—establish
The company’s releases establish the project announcement, planned investment and capacity, reported groundbreaking, and reported production start. They do not establish the plant’s current operating status or ownership. The history should therefore be treated as a record of the 2005–2007 project, not as evidence that the site remains in operation today.
