LG.Philips LCD began full-scale production at its LCD-module plant in Kobierzyce, near Wroclaw, Poland, on March 30, 2007. The factory assembled modules mainly for large LCD televisions; it was not a plant for fabricating LCD panels.
When did LG.Philips LCD start production in Poland?
Full-scale mass production began on March 30, 2007, nine months after construction started. LG.Philips LCD announced the production start on April 1, 2007. The company’s announcement identifies March 30 as the operating start date.
Where was the factory?
The plant was in Kobierzyce, near Wroclaw in southwestern Poland. LG.Philips LCD selected the location in 2005 as part of its plan to establish a manufacturing base closer to European customers. Its investment announcement set out the location and project plans.

What did the Kobierzyce plant make?
It assembled LCD modules at the back end of production. It was not a front-end panel fabrication plant, where the underlying display panels are made. The 2007 announcement says the operating factory would mainly produce modules for LCD televisions 32 inches and larger. LG.Philips LCD’s initial 2005 plan also listed 26-, 32-, 37- and 42-inch TV modules, as well as monitor modules of 19 inches and above.

Why did LG.Philips LCD choose Poland?
The company said a European production base would bring manufacturing nearer customers, support timely supply and swift technical assistance, and help it compete in the growing European LCD-TV market. The location complemented rather than replaced its Korean panel production: panels were made in Korea, while module assembly was positioned near European customers.
