LG.Philips LCD said full-scale production began on March 30, 2007, at its LCD module plant in Kobierzyce, near Wroclaw, Poland. The facility assembled modules for televisions and monitors; it was a back-end assembly site, not a plant for fabricating LCD panels from glass.

When did the Poland plant start production?

LG.Philips LCD announced on April 1, 2007, that full-scale mass production had started on March 30. The date differs from the earlier milestones: the company announced its investment plan in September 2005 and broke ground in June 2006.

  • September 7, 2005: LG.Philips LCD announced a proposed plant investment and production plan. Company announcement

Where was the plant, and what did it make?

The facility was in Kobierzyce, near Wroclaw in southwestern Poland. LG.Philips LCD described its manufacturing arrangement as front-end TFT-LCD panel production in Korea and back-end module production and assembly closer to customers. The Polish site handled module assembly; the company did not describe it as a glass-substrate or front-end panel fabrication plant.

Why did the company choose Poland?

LG.Philips LCD said assembling modules in Europe would put supply and technical support closer to customers and reduce distribution costs. The company framed this as a strategic rationale; the announcements do not independently measure whether the plant delivered those savings.

That statistic is the company’s account of DisplaySearch’s report, rather than a figure independently verified here against the original report.
