LF Energy’s April 22, 2025 announcement named Southern California Edison (SCE) as its first U.S. investor-owned utility member, at the General membership level. It also reported Hydro-Québec’s upgrade to Strategic membership, introduced an AI-focused paper, accepted Grid2Op into the foundation, and announced two 2025 summit dates that have since passed.

What LF Energy announced

LF Energy’s announcement was a roundup of foundation activity, not the launch of a single product. Its news covered utility participation, open-source work on AI and power systems, a new project in the foundation, collaboration with EPRI, and the schedule for two events in 2025. Google Coral USB Accelerator: ML Accelerator, USB 3.0 Type-C, Debian Linux Compatible
  • A USB accessory that brings machine learning inferencing to existing systems. Works with Raspberry Pi and other Linux systems
  • Performs high-speed ML inferencing: the on-board edge TPU Coprocessor is capable of performing 4 trillion operations (tera-operations) per second (tops), using 0.5 watts for each tops (2 tops per watt). For example, it can execute state-of-the-art mobile vision models such as mobilenet V2 AT 400 FPS, in a power efficient manner
  • Works with Debian Linux: connects to any debian-based Linux system with an included USB 3.0 Type-C cable
  • Supports tensorflow Lite: no need to build models from the ground up. Tensorflow Lite models can be compiled to run on the edge TPE
  • Supports automl vision edge: easily build and deploy fast, high-accuracy custom image classification models to your device with automl vision edge

What AI and open-source energy work did LF Energy describe?

AI paper

LF Energy announced the paper “Unlocking AI’s Potential for the Energy Transition Through Open Source.” According to the foundation, it reviews AI projects for energy systems and recommends ways stakeholders can approach AI readiness. These are LF Energy’s descriptions of the paper’s scope and recommendations, not independently established findings in the announcement.

Grid2Op joins LF Energy

Grid2Op, developed by RTE France, was accepted into LF Energy. The announcement describes it as a platform that began in power-grid research and AI-driven automation and evolved into a power-system optimization tool used in academia and industry.

When and where were the 2025 LF Energy summits?

Both event dates announced in April 2025 are in the past. The announcement does not establish a current or future summit schedule.

Event Announced date Location and context
LF Energy Summit Europe September 10–11, 2025 Aachen, Germany
LF Energy Summit North America October 3, 2025 Montreal, following the CIGRE 2025 International Symposium

LF Energy presented the summits as opportunities for learning, collaboration, and sharing practices around open-source energy solutions. Its announcement named utilities, grid operators, EV makers, sophisticated energy buyers, technology vendors, global energy companies, researchers, and other energy-system stakeholders among the relevant participants.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish

The announcement documents foundation membership changes, project and consortium activity, a paper’s stated scope, and historical event dates. It does not provide a named-person quotation or a performance statistic needed to explain these developments. It also does not give a current event schedule, so the 2025 dates should not be treated as upcoming opportunities.
