Rangers of a Broken World is a post-apocalyptic fantasy tabletop roleplaying game about protecting people and rebuilding together, not simply surviving a collapse. Designer Leon Richardson describes a setting remade by catastrophe, rangers empowered by divine beings, and rules that connect magic to a character’s identity and surroundings.
What is the premise of Rangers of a Broken World?
“The premise is that the world of this game was effectively destroyed about 100 years ago,” Richardson says. The catastrophe began when the central mountains melted, burying areas and sharply changing the climate. Humanity is now trying to rebuild in a dangerous, untamed world.
Players take the roles of rangers who have already completed a perilous pilgrimage to a stationary monument deity, receiving part of that deity’s power. Their purpose is to help protect humanity and its communities. The official campaign page describes the setting as an “Age of Hope and Song,” while naming threats such as Noble Demons, Horrors, and Automata.
That makes the ranger more than a vulnerable scavenger. The character is a protector with a relationship to divine power, but one operating in a landscape shaped by catastrophe and danger.

Why is this apocalypse meant to feel hopeful?
Richardson’s stated focus is what people can build after disaster: “I wanted to tell a post-apocalyptic story that was focused on rebuilding, hope, and people coming together to find a way forward because they have to.” The game’s tagline captures that emphasis: “together we can survive.”
Hope does not mean the world is safe or gentle. Richardson describes it this way: “In the book, I describe the world as kind but not always gentle.” The distinction matters: people can help one another and choose how to live, even while facing dangerous terrain and hostile forces.
In an Evil Hat design diary, Richardson contrasts this approach with post-apocalyptic stories that treat social collapse as an automatic slide into cruelty. The setting instead leaves room for communities to decide how they govern themselves. Its Noble Demons also carry a political dimension in Richardson’s interpretation: they are beings unable to form meaningful connections, bound by obsessions, and a way for the game to engage with oppressive rule. The Deiliths, by contrast, are sleeping divine beings represented by monuments who generally aid people by empowering them.

How do Rangers’ abilities and facets work?
The campaign description sketches the basic action procedure: choose a facet, name a skill, decide whether to mark part of the character’s Key, then roll. Each 5 or 6 counts as a success. The available description does not specify the dice type, so it is not enough to determine what dice a player needs.
Richardson identifies five facets. They describe approaches to problems, rather than measuring a character’s objective ability:
- Adaptability
- Daring
- Sensitivity
- Subtlety
- Understanding
Understanding, in particular, is about how likely a character is to solve a problem using knowledge—not how intelligent that character is. This framing treats a roll as a question of method and circumstance, rather than a simple score for innate capacity.

What are Scatter and Blur?
Scatter and Blur link supernatural abilities to identity, but in different ways. Scatter rises when a ranger casts their own spells: the character extends part of the self into the world and blends with it. Blur applies to abilities associated with a character’s special ally; overuse can entangle the character’s identity with that ally.

Richardson connects these mechanics to their personal experience of dissociation and mental health. That is an account of the designer’s intention and experience, not a clinical claim about how the rules affect players.
How does the magic use the environment?
Spell creation changed during development. In the first version, players combined words from their own character sheets. Richardson says playtesters started asking one another for the words they needed, turning the mechanic into a teamwork prompt. The design then shifted: a player combines a character’s spell word with a word supplied by the Conductor from the environment.
That change connects two of the game’s aims. The character contributes something personal, while the place contributes something immediate; magic becomes both an expression of identity and a response to the surrounding world. An Evil Hat design diary describes the same shift as moving the mechanic from the game’s “Teamwork” pillar toward “Nature.” Richardson summarized the change: “So, instead of rejecting my magic system entirely, I moved it from the ‘Teamwork’ pillar into the ‘Nature’ pillar, reimagining it to serve one of the game’s other three goals.”

These examples suggest different ways to inhabit the role of protector, from confronting the residue of conflict to navigating or adapting to dangerous places.
