CES 2026 presented Lenovo’s FIFA partnership as more than a sponsorship: the company promised AI tools, referee-camera video, player avatars and behind-the-scenes systems for the World Cup. FIFA later reported that some of those features were used during the tournament. That makes the partnership a credible technology-delivery story—but it does not prove Lenovo was the only thing FIFA got right.
What did Lenovo announce with FIFA at CES 2026?
At Lenovo Tech World at Sphere in Las Vegas on January 6, 2026, Lenovo and FIFA announced a slate of technology projects for the FIFA World Cup 2026. The announcement covered Football AI Pro, AI-enabled player avatars, a stabilized referee-camera feed, an Intelligent Command Center and FIFA-branded consumer devices. Lenovo framed the work around tournament operations, fan experience and access to football. Lenovo’s CES announcement described intended capabilities, not proof that every feature would be used or improve the tournament.
The agreement behind the announcement dates to October 15, 2024. Lenovo was named FIFA’s Official Technology Partner for the 2026 men’s World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States, and the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Lenovo said the arrangement involved devices, services, AI and data-center infrastructure, including ThinkPads, tablets, Motorola phones and servers. That points to technology delivery beyond brand placement, though public announcements do not establish the contract’s full terms or spending. Lenovo’s partnership announcement identifies the title and tournament scope.

How did the announced AI and video features work?
Football AI Pro: a knowledge assistant for teams
Lenovo and FIFA presented Football AI Pro as an enterprise knowledge assistant for football data and analysis, intended to help coaches, players and analysts draw on tournament information. Lenovo’s post-tournament account says all 48 teams used it and that it drew on millions of data points and more than 2,000 performance metrics. Those are Lenovo-reported usage and system figures; they do not show that the AI made coaching decisions or independently improved team performance. Lenovo’s post-event report gives the company’s account.

Referee View: stabilized footage from the official’s perspective
Referee View uses a small camera worn by the main referee to capture a first-person view. In its June 30, 2026, innovation report, FIFA said Referee View was used in every group-stage game, recording and transmitting HD video and audio in real time for broadcast and post-match footage. FIFA also said Lenovo supplied an algorithm-stabilized feed to address excessive camera movement. This establishes tournament use of the system; it does not mean every clip appeared on air or that viewers preferred the perspective. FIFA’s mid-tournament report describes its use.
Player avatars: scans used in offside visualization
Lenovo announced AI-enabled 3D player avatars for animation and offside replays. FIFA later said Lenovo provided technical expertise to scan all 1,248 players in the tournament, and that the resulting avatars were used in advanced semi-automated offside technology. FIFA said the visualizations made decisions more realistic and easier to understand; that is FIFA’s assessment of their presentation, not an independent evaluation of accuracy or viewer response. FIFA’s report on tournament technology gives the player-scan figure and use case.

Intelligent Command Center: operational coordination
At CES, Lenovo described an AI-supported Intelligent Command Center intended to give FIFA operational summaries and a real-time view of tournament functions. Lenovo’s July post-event account says the delivered system aggregated information from more than 40 FIFA functional areas and helped coordinate operations. That is the supplier’s account of its service, rather than an independent assessment of the center’s effect.

The record is strongest where FIFA itself describes a specific feature in use: Referee View and the player avatars. The broader deployment and performance figures come from Lenovo. In its post-event report, Lenovo says it deployed and managed more than 25,000 Lenovo and Motorola devices, supported more than 600 FIFA sites and provided more than 350 engineers and operational specialists. It also reports 99.99% uptime across its solutions. These are company-published figures, not the results of an independent audit.

Does the partnership justify saying it was FIFA’s only thing done right?
No objective comparison in the available reporting establishes that the Lenovo partnership was FIFA’s only successful decision. The phrase works as an opinionated headline, but it goes beyond what the evidence can prove. What the reporting does support is a narrower point: Lenovo’s role included operational technology, and at least some of the announced systems were subsequently described as being used during the tournament.
That distinction matters because a partnership can be substantial without every promised feature being independently validated. FIFA’s account confirms particular uses; Lenovo’s own report supplies the large-scale deployment and uptime claims. Neither source establishes that AI alone caused tournament success, that fans broadly preferred the new features, or that Lenovo outperformed an alternative supplier.
