The Lenovo ThinkServer TS460 remains a flexible used tower server if you need expandable storage, ECC memory and, on selected configurations, hot-swap drives and redundant power. Its age and basic remote-management feature set make the exact configuration—and its price and condition—more important than the model name.
What the TS460 is—and who it suits
The TS460 is a Lenovo tower server platform aimed at small and midsize businesses that want an expandable first server. Lenovo lists it as a 42L tower or 4U rack-form-factor system. Its 2017-era Xeon E3 platform can suit file serving, backup storage, light virtualization, lab clusters and small-business applications where ECC memory and storage redundancy matter more than modern per-core performance.
IT Pro’s 2017 review praised its room to grow and support for Xeon E3 v6 processors, while describing remote management as basic. That is a useful distinction: the TS460 offers meaningful configuration flexibility, but it is not a current-generation platform. The review does not establish how it compares with modern servers in current benchmarks.

These figures come from Lenovo’s 2017 Product Specifications Reference; options vary by system configuration. The specification lists 3.5-inch SATA HDD options from 1TB to 12TB, 3.5-inch SAS HDDs up to 10TB, 2.5-inch SAS HDDs up to 2.4TB, and SATA SSD options up to 960GB. Those are listed supported options, not a guarantee that every drive of those sizes will work in any used TS460.

How many drives can a TS460 hold?
There is no single bay count for the TS460. Lenovo documented several chassis and backplane configurations:
- Four 3.5-inch drives: available in SATA non-hot-swap, SATA hot-swap, or SATA/SAS hot-swap layouts.
- Eight 3.5-inch drives: SATA/SAS hot-swap.
- Eight or 16 2.5-inch drives: hot-swap.
- Mixed layout: four 3.5-inch plus eight 2.5-inch hot-swap bays.
- M.2: one M.2 SATA SSD is additionally supported.
When evaluating a used unit, inspect the actual front cage and internal backplane rather than assuming the maximum configuration. Bay count, hot-swap capability, drive carriers and compatible cabling depend on the configuration installed.

RAID options and drive compatibility
The RAID controller determines supported drive interfaces and RAID levels. Lenovo lists three relevant options:

For a replacement or capacity upgrade, match the disk to the installed controller and backplane: SATA drives are listed across the options, while SAS drives require a compatible SAS path such as the 520i or 720i and an appropriate backplane. A drive’s physical size and interface are not enough by themselves; confirm the exact controller, backplane, carrier and firmware compatibility for the specific system.

What to check before buying a used TS460
Configuration differences can change the cost and usefulness substantially. Lenovo’s model table, for example, includes four-bay E3-1220 v6 systems and eight-bay E3-1270 v6 systems with dual 450W supplies.
- Identify the drive cage: photograph the front and verify the number and size of bays, hot-swap carriers, and presence of the matching backplane.
- Record the RAID adapter: confirm whether the system has the 121i, 520i or 720i, and whether required keys or cache options are included for the RAID level you need.
- Check the power supply: establish whether it has a fixed 300W supply or redundant hot-swap 450W units; do not infer this from the TS460 name.
- Price the complete build: include any missing carriers, drives, RAID hardware and memory when comparing systems.
- Assess fit and parts: account for the 593mm chassis depth, noise in your intended location and the availability of replacement parts.
Lenovo’s specifications and the 2017 review do not establish a current street price, current firmware-support date, measured noise level or present-day benchmark results. Check the condition and included components of the particular unit instead of treating an old list price or theoretical maximum as its current value.

The TS460 can still make sense as an inexpensive used server when its installed bay layout, RAID hardware, memory and power configuration match a specific job. It is most compelling for storage-heavy or light server workloads that benefit from ECC and expandability. It is a weaker choice if you need compact dimensions, quiet operation, modern remote-management integration or high single-thread performance. Because current pricing and condition vary, judge the complete system rather than buying on the model name alone.
