The Lenovo ThinkPad X280 is a compact, withdrawn business laptop that can still make sense as a used purchase—but only if the exact configuration and condition fit your needs. Its strongest specifications include optional quad-core 8th-generation processors, a 12.5-inch Full HD display, Thunderbolt 3, and a low listed starting weight. The key catch is that its memory is soldered, so you cannot upgrade the RAM after purchase.
This is a specification-based review, not a hands-on test. Lenovo’s published figures describe the X280 when new; they do not establish the performance or battery life of a particular used unit.
What is the ThinkPad X280?
The X280 is a 12.5-inch ThinkPad ultraportable. Lenovo’s July 2020 platform specifications list configurations with 7th-generation Core i3 and i5 processors, as well as 8th-generation Core i3, i5, and i7 options. Regional availability varied, so the family name alone does not tell you what processor a listing contains.

Some 8th-generation options—the Core i5-8250U, i5-8350U, i7-8550U, and i7-8650U—are four-core, eight-thread processors. Other configurations differ, including 7th-generation options, so verify the exact CPU rather than assuming every X280 has the same performance potential. Specifications are not a substitute for current benchmark results, and no comparative performance test is established here.
#1 Best Overall
- 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8350U Processor – Quad-core and turbo speed for robust performance in multitasking and productivity applications.
- 12.5" Portable Display - Compact and lightweight, perfect for on-the-go professionals with excellent sharpness and vibrant colors.
- 8GB DDR4 Memory - Allows you to run multiple applications simultaneously without interruption.
- 256GB SSD – Fast system boot, fast data access, and enough space for essential files.
- Windows 11 Pro and versatile connectivity – Secure and productive operating system, with HDMI and USB ports for easy connection to external peripherals and displays.
Lenovo’s product record marks the X280 as withdrawn. That makes it a used- or refurbished-market choice rather than a current model to evaluate as a new mass-market laptop.
How much RAM does the X280 have, and can you upgrade it?
Lenovo lists 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB of DDR4-2400 memory, soldered to the system board, with no memory sockets. The listed 4GB configuration was unavailable in the US and EMEA. Because the RAM cannot be expanded through a socket, choose the installed capacity you need at purchase; do not count on adding memory later.
Check the actual unit’s installed RAM in its listing or system information, and make sure the seller’s description matches the machine being shipped. Lenovo’s July 2020 X280 platform specifications are the reference for the listed memory options.
Rank #2
- Intel Core i7-8650U for fast, efficient performance
- 12.5" FHD Touchscreen (1920×1080) for crisp visuals and interactive use
- 16GB RAM for smooth multitasking and productivity
- 256GB SSD for quick boot times and reliable storage
- Intel UHD Graphics 620 for everyday computing and light creative work
Which X280 screen and weight should you expect?
The X280 has a 12.5-inch, 16:9 display. Lenovo lists HD resolution at 1366×768 and Full HD at 1920×1080, with touch support available on an FHD configuration. The panel affects both sharpness and the machine’s listed starting weight:
| Display configuration | Lenovo-listed weight |
|---|---|
| FHD, non-touch | 1.13 kg |
| HD, non-touch | 1.26 kg |
| FHD, multi-touch | 1.27 kg |
These are Lenovo’s 2020 specification figures, and configuration and regional availability vary; Lenovo notes that FHD non-touch was not available in the US. Confirm the resolution and touch status of the specific used unit instead of inferring them from a generic X280 listing.
What ports and external-display options does it have?
For a compact laptop of its era, the X280 offers a useful mix of legacy and newer connections. Lenovo lists:

Lenovo lists maximum external-display resolutions of 4096×2304 at 60Hz over USB-C and 4096×2160 at 30Hz over HDMI. Those are published interface limits, not a guarantee that every monitor, cable, dock, or multi-display arrangement will work at those settings. The platform specifications also include optional WWAN/LTE configurations; check whether the individual machine has the relevant hardware rather than assuming cellular connectivity is present.
How long does the X280 battery last?
Lenovo specifies an integrated 48Wh battery and reports “MobileMark 2014: 16.6 hr.” That 16.6-hour figure is the manufacturer’s historical benchmark claim, not a prediction for everyday use or for a used laptop. Lenovo itself warns: “Battery life varies significantly with hardware configurations, settings, usage, & other factors.”
A battery in a resale unit may also have aged through use and time. The published specification cannot establish its remaining capacity or runtime. Ask the seller for a battery-health report or return option, and treat any runtime estimate for a particular machine as unverified unless it has been measured under stated conditions.

What are the X280’s strengths and trade-offs?
Why it may suit a used-laptop buyer
- Some configurations pair a compact 12.5-inch chassis with a listed starting weight as low as 1.13 kg.
- FHD and multi-touch display options are available, though not in every configuration or region.
- Selected 8th-generation processors provide four cores and eight threads, unlike some lower-generation choices.
- Thunderbolt 3, USB-C charging and DisplayPort support, HDMI, and two Type-A ports offer flexible connections.
- Lenovo’s specifications include a TrackPoint and spill-resistant keyboard.
What to weigh against those benefits
- Memory is soldered and the listed maximum is 16GB, which limits future flexibility.
- The 12.5-inch 16:9 screen is small by modern laptop standards, and resolution, touch support, and weight vary by configuration.
- The model is withdrawn, and a used machine’s condition matters as much as its original specifications.
- The historical battery benchmark says little about the health of an individual resale unit.
What should you check before buying a used or refurbished X280?
Evaluate the actual machine, not just the model name. Before paying, confirm these details with the seller:
- Processor: Get the exact CPU model and generation. The X280 range includes different processor options, and some 8th-generation models are quad-core.
- Memory: Confirm the installed RAM capacity. It is soldered, so a lower-capacity unit cannot be upgraded with a memory module.
- Display: Verify HD or FHD resolution and whether the panel is touch-enabled. Ask about defects if the listing does not document screen condition.
- Storage: Confirm the installed drive type and capacity; do not assume all listings have the same storage configuration.
- Battery: Request current health or capacity information if available. The original 48Wh specification and MobileMark result do not establish present condition.
- Keyboard and physical condition: Check the keyboard layout, TrackPoint and keys, ports, hinges, and chassis. A layout that differs from yours can be inconvenient even if the laptop works properly.
- Connectivity: If you need LTE/WWAN, confirm that the specific unit includes the necessary configuration.
- Seller terms: Read the return policy and any warranty terms for that particular sale. Coverage and condition are not established by Lenovo’s original specifications.
Lenovo provides an X280 guides and manuals page, including a Hardware Maintenance Manual dated September 25, 2020, for reference on the machine and its maintenance documentation.
Is the ThinkPad X280 still worth buying?
It can be a reasonable used ultraportable if the price, condition, and fixed configuration suit your workload. Favor a unit with enough soldered RAM for the time you expect to keep it, the display you want, a processor appropriate to your tasks, and a battery whose condition is documented or protected by a return policy. Compare it with other used laptops on current performance, screen quality, battery condition, upgradeability, and total cost; the X280’s original specifications alone cannot determine which used system is the better value.
Do not pay a premium based only on the ThinkPad name or a generic claim that the laptop is “powerful.” There is no current resale price or stock level established here, so judge the specific listing and its seller terms.
