The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet (2nd Gen) is a detachable Windows tablet, not a hinged convertible laptop. Its 12-inch 3:2 touchscreen, magnetic keyboard, USB-A and USB-C ports, and optional expansion modules made it a flexible business device when it launched in 2017. Lenovo now lists it as withdrawn, so whether one is worth buying today depends on the exact configuration, condition, accessories, and price of the individual used or refurbished unit.
What the ThinkPad X1 Tablet (2nd Gen) is
Lenovo designed this model as a tablet that attaches to a thin keyboard magnetically through a pogo connector. The keyboard includes a TrackPoint, touchpad, and backlighting. It can be detached for tablet use; it does not fold around a permanently attached keyboard like a conventional 2-in-1 laptop.
Lenovo’s August 2017 specifications give starting weights of 0.77 kg for the tablet alone and 1.07 kg with the keyboard attached. The tablet measures 291.5 × 209.5 × 8.45 mm; with the keyboard, its listed thickness is 14.15 mm. These are manufacturer specifications, not measurements of a particular used device. Display and day-to-day fit
The 12-inch glossy IPS touchscreen has a 2160 × 1440 resolution and a 3:2 aspect ratio. Lenovo lists 360 nits brightness, 800:1 contrast, 170-degree viewing angles, ten-point multitouch, and Gorilla Glass. The taller-than-widescreen format offers more vertical room for documents and web pages, while the tablet form suits touch and pen input. Those specifications do not establish the condition or appearance of an individual panel today.

The ThinkPad Pen Pro was optional, so do not assume a listing includes one. Check the actual sale contents, especially if handwriting or annotation is important.
Configurations vary substantially
The model family came with several seventh-generation Intel processor options, and its memory is soldered to the system board. A listing’s generation name alone therefore does not identify its performance or capacity. Check the exact model and configuration before comparing prices.
| Component | Lenovo-listed options | What to verify in a listing |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Core m3-7Y30; Core i5-7Y54 or i5-7Y57; Core i7-7Y75 | Exact processor, not just “X1 Tablet 2nd Gen” |
| Memory | 4 GB, 8 GB, or 16 GB LPDDR3 at 1866 MHz; soldered | Installed capacity, which is not socketed for an ordinary memory upgrade |
| Storage | M.2 SATA or PCIe NVMe SSD configurations | SSD interface and installed capacity; capacity varies by configuration |
| Graphics | Integrated Intel HD Graphics 615 | Confirm the listed configuration and device identity |
| Wireless options | Optional LTE-A configuration | Whether cellular hardware is present and usable for your needs |
Lenovo’s specifications establish the available configurations, not the condition, speed, or remaining service life of any second-hand unit. Treat processor tier, memory, storage, and battery condition as separate checks rather than assuming all units in the family are alike.

Ports and optional modules
The tablet’s connections are useful for a detachable of its age: one USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A port, one USB-C Gen 1 port with Power Delivery 2.0, Mini DisplayPort, a microSD slot, the keyboard connector, and an optional-module connector. A nano-SIM slot appears on applicable configurations. Lenovo also listed optional USB-to-RJ45 Ethernet and USB-C-to-HDMI/VGA adapters.
Lenovo specified two optional expansion modules, but their original availability does not establish that a module is easy to find now:
- Productivity module: adds USB 3.0, HDMI, OneLink+, and a 24 Wh battery. Lenovo’s specification table lists a five-hour figure for the module.
- Presenter module: includes a pico projector, HDMI, and a 10 Wh battery.
Confirm module compatibility and whether it is actually included before paying extra for a listing that mentions one.

Battery claims and what they mean
Lenovo lists a 37 Wh battery and the entry “MobileMark® 2014: 10 hr (local video playback)” in its August 2017 specification sheet. That is Lenovo’s stated result and test-method context, not an independently reproduced benchmark or a promise of runtime on a used tablet. Battery wear and the condition of the particular unit matter more to a present-day buyer than the original figure.

Is it worth buying used or refurbished?
Lenovo’s product page labels the X1 Tablet (2nd Gen) “Withdrawn” and notes that configurations may not be available in every region. Current stock, pricing, warranty coverage, and refurbishment quality therefore need to be checked at the listing level. Lenovo PSREF: withdrawn product page.
It may suit someone who specifically wants a compact Windows tablet with a detachable keyboard, legacy-friendly ports, or an expansion module, and who can verify the unit before purchase. It is a less straightforward choice if you need a dependable all-day battery, modern performance, or a predictable warranty: the available evidence does not establish present-day value or performance for any particular listing.
- Confirm that the device is the 2nd Gen model, not the first or third generation or a newer X12 Detachable.
- Ask for the processor, installed memory, SSD interface and capacity, and cellular configuration, if relevant.
- Verify battery condition, screen and port operation, keyboard inclusion and function, and any pen or module included.
- Check the seller’s return terms and warranty, then judge the price against the unit’s actual condition and bundle.
Verdict
The ThinkPad X1 Tablet (2nd Gen) remains an interesting detachable design, with a practical port selection and optional modules that distinguish it from simpler tablets. But it is a withdrawn 2017 product with fixed memory and highly variable used-unit condition. Consider it only when the exact configuration and accessories are clear and the seller can substantiate condition, battery health, and support; the model name alone is not enough to establish a good buy.
